Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll
1In the #ch. 25:1; 45:1; [ver. 9]fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2“Take #Ezra 6:2; Ps. 40:7; Ezek. 2:9; Zech. 5:1, 2 a scroll and #ch. 30:2; [ch. 51:60] write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and #ch. 25:2 Judah #See ch. 25:15-26; 46–51 and all the nations, #ch. 1:2; 25:3from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. 3#ch. 26:3; Ezek. 12:3; Zeph. 2:3; [Amos 5:15] It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, #[ch. 18:8] so that every one may turn from his evil way, and #See ch. 31:34that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
4Then Jeremiah called #See ch. 32:12 Baruch the son of Neriah, and #See ch. 32:12 Baruch wrote on #[See ver. 2 above]a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord that he had spoken to him. 5And Jeremiah ordered #[See ver. 4 above] Baruch, saying, #ch. 32:2; 33:1; 39:15“I am banned from going to the house of the Lord, 6so you are to go, and #[ver. 9]on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the Lord’s house you shall read the words of the Lord from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities. 7#[See ver. 3 above] It may be that their plea for mercy will come before the Lord, #[See ver. 3 above]and that every one will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the Lord has pronounced against this people.” 8And Baruch the son of Neriah did all that Jeremiah the prophet ordered him about reading from the scroll the words of the Lord in the Lord’s house.
9 # [ver. 1] In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, #ver. 22 in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem #[2 Chr. 20:3]proclaimed a fast before the Lord. 10Then, in the hearing of all the people, Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the scroll, in the house of the Lord, in #[ch. 35:2]the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper court, at the entry of the New Gate of the Lord’s house.
11When Micaiah the son of Gemariah, son of #ch. 26:24; 40:5; 2 Chr. 34:8, 15, 18Shaphan, heard all the words of the Lord from the scroll, 12he went down to the king’s house, into the secretary’s chamber, and #ch. 26:10 all the officials were sitting there: #ver. 20; ch. 41:1; 2 Kgs. 25:25 Elishama the secretary, #ver. 25 Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, #ver. 25 Elnathan #ch. 26:22the son of Achbor, #ver. 25 Gemariah the son of #ch. 26:22Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the officials. 13And Micaiah told them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the scroll in the hearing of the people. 14Then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, son of #ver. 26; ch. 37:3, 13; 38:1Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, “Take in your hand the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them. 15And they said to him, “Sit down and read it.” So Baruch read it to them. 16When they heard all the words, they turned one to another in fear. And they said to Baruch, #ver. 20“We must report all these words to the king.” 17Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, please, how did you write all these words? Was it at his dictation?” 18Baruch answered them, “He dictated all these words to me, #ver. 32; [Rom. 16:22]while I wrote them with ink on the scroll.” 19Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go and hide, you and Jeremiah, and let no one know where you are.”
20So they went into the court to the king, having put the scroll in #ver. 12the chamber of Elishama the secretary, and they reported all the words to the king. 21Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials who stood beside the king. 22It was #ver. 9; [John 10:22] the ninth month, and the king was sitting in #Amos 3:15the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. 23As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot. 24Yet #[ver. 16] neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, #See Josh. 7:6nor did they tear their garments. 25Even when #ver. 12 Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah #[Isa. 59:16]urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. 26And the king commanded Jerahmeel the #[1 Kgs. 22:26; Zeph. 1:8] king’s son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and #ver. 14 Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize #See ch. 45:1-3Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them.
27Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28“Take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Lord, You have burned this scroll, saying, #See ch. 26:9“Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cut off from it man and beast?” 30Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: #[ch. 22:30] He shall have none #[ch. 22:2, 4] to sit on the throne of David, #[ch. 22:19]and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night. 31#[ch. 1:16]And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.’”
32Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to #See ver. 4 Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who #ver. 18wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.

Baruch Reads Jeremiah’s Scroll
1Now it happened in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of King Josiah of Judah, that this word came to Jeremiah from Adonai, saying:
2“Take a megillah scroll, and write in it all the words that I have spoken to you about Israel, about Judah, and about all the nations from the day I spoke to you—from the days of Josiah until this day.
3Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the calamity that I am planning to do to them, in order that they may turn, each one from his evil way. Then I would forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
4So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote from Jeremiah’s mouth, all the words that Adonai had spoken to him, into a megillah scroll.
5Then Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying: “I am detained; I cannot go into the House of Adonai.
6So you go and read in the megillah —which you have written from my mouth, the words of Adonai—in the ears of the people, in the House of Adonai, on a fast day. You should also read them in the ears of all Judah coming from their towns.
7Perhaps they will present their supplication before Adonai, and each one will turn from his wicked way. For great is the anger and fury that Adonai has pronounced against this people.”
8So Baruch son of Neriah did according to all that the prophet Jeremiah commanded him, reading from the book the words of Adonai in the House of Adonai.
9Now it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of King Josiah of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before Adonai—all the people in Jerusalem and all the people that came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem.
10Then Baruch read from the scroll the words of Jeremiah in the House of Adonai, in the chamber of Gemariah son of the scribe Shaphan, in the upper court at the entry of the New Gate of the House of Adonai, in the ears of all the people.
11Now when Micaiah son of Gemariah son of Shaphan, had heard from the scroll all the words of Adonai,
12he went down to the scribe’s chamber of the king’s palace. All the officials sat there—the scribe Elishama, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the officials.
13Then Micaiah reported to them all the words that he had heard Baruch reading out of the scroll in the ears of the people.
14All the officials sent Jehudi son of Nethaniah son of Shelemiah son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying: “Bring in your hand the megillah which you read in the ears of the people and come.” So Baruch son of Neriah brought the megillah in his hand and went to them.
15Then they said to him: “Sit down now, and read it in our ears.” So Baruch read it in their ears.
16After they had heard all the words, they turned to each other in fear, then said to Baruch: “We will surely report all these words to the king.”
17They also asked Baruch, saying: “Tell us now, how did you write all these words? At his dictation?”
18Then Baruch answered them: “He pronounced all these words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink into the scroll.”
19Then the officials said to Baruch: “Go, hide yourself—you and Jeremiah—and let no one know where you are.”
20Then they went to the king in the courtyard, after they had deposited the megillah in the chamber of the scribe Elishama. They reported all the words in the ears of the king.
21So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the megillah , and he brought it out of the chamber of the scribe Elishama. Jehudi read it in the ears of the king and all the officials who were standing by the king.
22Since it was the ninth month, the king was residing in the winter house, with a fireplace burning before him.
23Now as soon as Jehudi had read three or four columns, he cut it with the scribe’s knife and tossed it into the fire that was in the fireplace, until the whole megillah was consumed in the fire in the fireplace.
24Yet neither the king, nor any of his servants who heard all these words were afraid, nor tore their clothes.
25Moreover Elnatan, Delaiah and Gemariah entreated the king not to burn the megillah , but he would not listen to them.
26Then the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, along with Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel, to seize the scribe Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah—but Adonai hid them.
27Then the word of Adonai came to Jeremiah, after the king had burned the megillah with the words that Baruch had written at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying:
28“Take yet another megillah , and write in it all the original words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah burned up.
29About King Jehoiakim of Judah you will say, thus says Adonai: ‘You have burned this megillah , saying, “Why have you written in it, saying the king of Babylon will surely come and destroy this land and will bring an end to both man and beast from it?”’”
30Therefore thus says Adonai about King Jehoiakim of Judah: “He will have no one to sit on the throne of David. Moreover, his dead body will be tossed out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.
31I will also punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity, and I will bring on them, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the people of Judah all the calamity that I have pronounced against them—but they did not listen.”
32Then Jeremiah took another megillah and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, who wrote in it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll which King Jehoiakim of Judah had burned up in the fire—and added to them many similar words.
