1 # [Lev. 23:34, 36] In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet: 2“Speak now to #ch. 1:1Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to #ch. 1:1Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, 3#[Ezra 3:12] ‘Who is left among you who saw this house #[ver. 9] in its former glory? How do you see it now? #[Zech. 4:10]Is it not as nothing in your eyes? 4Yet now #Zech. 8:9; [Zech. 4:6, 7] be strong, O #[See ver. 2 above] Zerubbabel, declares the Lord. #Zech. 8:9; [Zech. 4:6, 7] Be strong, O #[See ver. 2 above] Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. #Zech. 8:9; [Zech. 4:6, 7] Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord. #[ch. 1:14] Work, for #ch. 1:13I am with you, declares the Lord of hosts, 5#See Ex. 29:45 according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. #Neh. 9:20 My Spirit remains in your midst. #Zech. 8:13, 15Fear not. 6For thus says the Lord of hosts: #Cited Heb. 12:26 Yet once more, in a little while, #ver. 21I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. 7And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and #[Isa. 60:1]I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts. 8#[1 Chr. 29:14, 16]The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts. 9#[ch. 1:8] The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts. 10 # ver. 18, 20 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, #ch. 1:1in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, 11“Thus says the Lord of hosts: #See Lev. 10:10, 11Ask the priests about the law: 12‘If someone carries #Jer. 11:15 holy meat in the fold of his garment and touches with his fold bread or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food, does it become holy?’” The priests answered and said, #[ver. 14]“No.” 13Then Haggai said, #Lev. 22:4, 6 “If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body #[Num. 19:22]touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered and said, “It does become unclean.” 14Then Haggai answered and said, #[Isa. 64:6]“So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the Lord, and so with every work of their hands. And what they offer there is unclean. 15Now then, #[ch. 1:5]consider from this day onward.#2:15 Or backward; also verse 18 Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the Lord, 16how did you fare? #[ch. 1:6]When#2:16 Probable reading (compare Septuagint); Hebrew Lord, since they were. Zerubbabel Chosen as a Signet
20The word of the Lord came a second time to Haggai #[See ver. 18 above]on the twenty-fourth day of the month, 21“Speak to #ch. 1:1; [Zech. 4:6] Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, #ver. 6I am about to shake the heavens and the earth, 22and #Dan. 2:44; Zech. 12:9; [Matt. 24:7] to overthrow the throne of kingdoms. Haggai 2

The Glory of the New Temple
1In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the Lord by the prophet Hag´gai, saying, 2Speak now to Zerub´babel the son of She-al´ti-el, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jos´edech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying, 3#Ezra 3.12. Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing? 4Yet now be strong, O Zerub´babel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jos´edech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts: 5#Exod 33.14. According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my Spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not. 6#Heb 12.26. For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; 7and I will shake all nations, and the Desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts. 8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts. 9The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.
The People's Unfaithfulness Reproved
10In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Dari´us, came the word of the Lord by Hag´gai the prophet, saying, 11Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying, 12If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No. 13#Num 19.11-22. Then said Hag´gai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean. 14Then answered Hag´gai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the Lord; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean. 15And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the Lord: 16since those days were, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressvat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty. 17I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labors of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the Lord. 18Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the Lord's temple was laid, consider it. 19Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.
The Lord's Promise to Zerubbabel
20And again the word of the Lord came unto Hag´gai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying, 21Speak to Zerub´babel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth; 22and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother. 23In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerub´babel, my servant, the son of She-al´ti-el, saith the Lord, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord of hosts.
