Jerusalem Will Be Destroyed
1“And you, #See ch. 2:1 O son of man, take a #Ps. 57:4; Isa. 49:2 sharp sword. Use it as #[Isa. 7:20] a barber’s razor and #[ch. 1:3; 44:20; Lev. 21:5]pass it over your head and your beard. Then take balances for weighing and divide the hair. 2#See ver. 12 A third part you shall burn in the fire #[ver. 5; ch. 4:1] in the midst of the city, #See ch. 4:8 when the days of the siege are completed. And a third part you shall take and strike with the sword all around the city. #[ver. 10] And a third part you shall scatter to the wind, and #ver. 12; ch. 12:14; [Jer. 9:16]I will unsheathe the sword after them. 3#[Jer. 40:6; 52:16]And you shall take from these a small number and bind them in the skirts of your robe. 4#[Jer. 42:18; 44:14]And of these again you shall take some and cast them into the midst of the fire and burn them in the fire. From there a fire will come out into all the house of Israel.
5“Thus says the Lord God: #[ver. 2; ch. 4:1] This is Jerusalem. I have set her #[ch. 38:12]in the center of the nations, with countries all around her. 6And she has rebelled against my rules by doing wickedness #See ch. 16:47, 48 more than the nations, and against my statutes more than #[See ver. 5 above]the countries all around her; for they have rejected my rules and have not walked in my statutes. 7Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you are #Ps. 2:1; 46:6 more turbulent than the nations that are all around you, #ch. 16:47 and have not walked in my statutes or obeyed my rules, #[ch. 11:12]and have not#5:7 Some Hebrew manuscripts and Syriac lack not even acted according to the rules of the nations that are all around you, 8therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, even I, #See ch. 13:8 am against you. #ch. 11:9; 16:41; 23:10 And I will execute judgments#5:8 The same Hebrew expression can mean obey rules, or execute judgments, depending on the context in your midst #ch. 22:16in the sight of the nations. 9And because of all your abominations I will do with you #[2 Kgs. 21:12, 13; Lam. 1:12; Dan. 9:12]what I have never yet done, and the like of which I will never do again. 10Therefore #See Jer. 19:9 fathers shall eat their sons in your midst, and sons shall eat their fathers. #[See ver. 8 above] And I will execute judgments on you, #ch. 12:14; 17:21; 22:15; 36:19; Deut. 28:64; Jer. 9:16; 15:4; Zech. 2:6; [ver. 2; ch. 36:19]and any of you who survive I will scatter to all the winds. 11Therefore, #See ch. 16:48 as I live, declares the Lord God, surely, #ch. 8:3, 5, 6; 23:39; 2 Chr. 36:14; Jer. 7:30 because you have defiled my sanctuary #ch. 11:18 with all your detestable things and with all your #ch. 7:20; 11:18, 21 abominations, #ch. 16:27 therefore I will withdraw.#5:11 Some Hebrew manuscripts I will cut you down #ch. 7:4, 9; 8:18; 9:5, 10; [Jer. 21:7]My eye will not spare, and I will have no pity. 12#[ver. 2; ch. 6:11, 12; Jer. 15:2]A third part of you shall die of pestilence and be consumed with famine in your midst; #[ver. 2; ch. 6:11, 12; Jer. 15:2]a third part shall fall by the sword all around you; #[ver. 2; ch. 6:11, 12; Jer. 15:2]and a third part I will scatter to all the winds and will unsheathe the sword after them.
13 # ch. 6:12; 7:8; 20:8, 21; Lam. 4:11; [ch. 39:25] “Thus shall my anger spend itself, and I will vent my fury upon them and satisfy myself. And they shall know that #ch. 36:5, 6; 38:19I am the Lord—that I have spoken in my jealousy—#ch. 6:12; 7:8; 20:8, 21; Lam. 4:11; [ch. 39:25] when I spend my fury upon them. 14Moreover, I will make you #ch. 6:6; See Jer. 22:5 a desolation and #ch. 22:4; Neh. 2:17; Ps. 79:4; Jer. 24:9 an object of reproach among #ver. 5, 6the nations all around you and in the sight of all who pass by. 15You shall be#5:15 Dead Sea Scroll, Septuagint, Syriac, Vulgate, Targum; Masoretic Text And it shall be a reproach and a taunt, a warning #ch. 14:8; Deut. 28:37 and a horror, to #[See ver. 14 above] the nations all around you, #[ch. 14:21] when I execute judgments on you in anger and fury, and #ch. 25:17with furious rebukes—I am the Lord; I have spoken— 16when I send against you#5:16 Hebrew them #Deut. 32:23, 24 the deadly arrows of famine, arrows for destruction, which I will send to destroy you, and when I bring more and more famine upon #See ch. 4:16you and break your supply#5:16 Hebrew staff of bread. 17I will send famine and #ch. 14:15; 33:27; 34:25; Deut. 32:24; [2 Kgs. 17:25] wild beasts against you, #[ch. 36:12] and they will rob you of your children. Pestilence and #ch. 38:22blood shall pass through you, and I will bring the sword upon you. I am the Lord; I have spoken.”
