Amos 7

Warning Visions
1 # ch. 8:1 This is what the Lord God showed me: behold, #[Joel 1:4]; See Ex. 10:4he was forming locusts when the latter growth was just beginning to sprout, and behold, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings. 2When they had finished eating the grass of the land, I said,
“O Lord God, please forgive!
# [Ps. 130:3] How can Jacob stand?
He is so small!”
3 # [Deut. 32:36; Joel 2:13] The Lord relented concerning this:
“It shall not be,” said the Lord.
4 # [See ver. 1 above] This is what the Lord God showed me: behold, the Lord God was calling #[Rev. 8:7, 8]for a judgment by fire, and it devoured the great deep and was eating up the land. 5Then I said,
“O Lord God, please cease!
# [See ver. 2 above] How can Jacob stand?
He is so small!”
6 # [See ver. 3 above] The Lord relented concerning this:
“This also shall not be,” said the Lord God.
7 # [See ver. 1 above] This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with #[ver. 17]; See 2 Kgs. 21:13a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. 8And the Lord said to me, #ch. 8:2 “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,
“Behold, I am setting #[See ver. 7 above]a plumb line
in the midst of my people Israel;
# ch. 8:2 I will never again pass by them;
9 #
Gen. 26:23, 25 the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate,
and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste,
and I will rise against #See 2 Kgs. 15:8-12the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”
Amos Accused
10Then Amaziah #1 Kgs. 12:32 the priest of Bethel sent to #ch. 1:1 Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has #[Jer. 38:4]conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. 11For thus Amos has said,
“‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
and #ch. 6:7Israel must go into exile
away from his land.’”
12And Amaziah said to Amos, #See 1 Sam. 9:9 “O seer, go, flee away #[ch. 1:1] to the land of Judah, and #[Mic. 3:5, 11]eat bread there, and prophesy there, 13but #See ch. 2:12 never again prophesy at Bethel, for #See 1 Kgs. 12:29–13:1it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.”
14Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, #ch. 1:1; [Zech. 13:5] “I was#7:14 Or am; twice in this verse no prophet, nor a prophet’s son, but #ch. 1:1I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. 15#[Ps. 78:71]But the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ 16#ch. 3:1 Now therefore hear the word of the Lord.
“You say, #[See ver. 12 above] ‘Do not prophesy against Israel,
and #Ezek. 20:46; 21:2; Mic. 2:6 do not preach against the house of #[ver. 9]Isaac.’
17 # [Jer. 28:16; 29:21, 31, 32] Therefore thus says the Lord:
“‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city,
and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword,
and your land #[ver. 7, 8] shall be divided up with a measuring line;
you yourself shall die in an unclean land,
and #[See ver. 11 above]Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.’”

Amos 7
7
1This is what the Lord God showed#7:1. In vision. me. I saw that he was preparing a swarm of locusts just when the spring crops began to grow. (Spring crops begin to grow right after the time when the king's hay is cut.)#7:1. Assumed meaning; Hebrew is unclear. 2And so when the locusts finished eating every green plant in the fields, I pleaded with the Lord God, “Please forgive your people! How can the descendants of Jacob survive? They are so weak.” 3So the Lord changed his mind. “It won't happen,” said the Lord.
4This is what the Lord God showed me. I saw that the Lord God was calling for a judgment of fire. The fire burned up the depths of the sea and destroyed the farmland. 5I pleaded with the Lord God, “Please stop! How can the descendants of Jacob survive? They are so weak.” 6So the Lord changed his mind. “This too won't happen,” said the Lord.
7This is what he showed me. I saw the Lord was standing beside a wall that had been built with a plumb line.#7:7. This term only occurs here, so the meaning is not certain. He was holding a plumb line in his hand. 8And the Lord asked me, “Amos, what do you see?” I replied, “A plumb line.” And the Lord God said, “I am placing a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel.#7:8. As a standard to measure his people's faithfulness. I won't ignore their sins anymore. 9The high places#7:9. Where pagan worship occurred. of the descendants of Isaac will be torn down, and the holy places of Israel will be destroyed. Sword in hand, I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam.”
10Then Amaziah, priest of Bethel, sent a message to Jeroboam, king of Israel, saying, “Amos is plotting against you among the people of Israel. What he's saying is unbearable! 11For he's saying Jeroboam will be killed by the sword, and the people will be taken away from their land into exile.”
12Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away prophet! Run away to the land of Judah. Go and prophesy there to earn your bread.#7:12. Implying a selfish motive for Amos' prophesying—to earn a living. 13But don't ever prophesy again at Bethel, for this is where the king worships, the national Temple.”
14But Amos replied, “I'm not a trained prophet,#7:14. Meaning that Amos had not attended the schools of the prophets. or the son of a prophet. I was just a shepherd, and also took care of fig trees. 15The Lord took me from following my flock, and the Lord told me, ‘Go, and give my message to my people of Israel.’”
16So now hear what the Lord is telling you: You say, “Don't prophesy against Israel, and don't preach against the descendants of Isaac.”
17But this is what the Lord says: Your wife will become a prostitute in the city; your sons and daughters will be killed by the sword. Your land will be measured and divided up, and you yourself will die in a foreign land. The people of Israel will definitely be taken from the land and go into exile.
