Woe to Those at Ease in Zion
1 #
Isa. 32:9; Zeph. 1:12; Luke 6:24; James 5:1 “Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,
and to those who feel secure on #ch. 3:9; 4:1 the mountain of Samaria,
# [Ezek. 22:6] the notable men of #See Ex. 19:5the first of the nations,
to whom the house of Israel comes!
2Pass over to #Gen. 10:10; Isa. 10:9 Calneh, and see,
and from there go to #1 Kgs. 8:65; 2 Kgs. 18:34; Isa. 10:9 Hamath the great;
then go down to #See 1 Sam. 17:4 Gath of the Philistines.
# [Nah. 3:8] Are you better than these kingdoms?
Or is their territory greater than your territory,
3 # [ch. 9:10; Ezek. 12:27] O you who put far away the day of disaster
# See ch. 3:10 and bring near the seat of violence?
4“Woe to those #[ch. 3:12] who lie on #[Esth. 1:6] beds of ivory
# [ch. 3:12] and stretch themselves out on their couches,
and eat lambs from the flock
# [James 5:5] and calves from the midst of the stall,
5 # See ch. 5:23 who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp
and like David #See ch. 5:23invent for themselves instruments of music,
6 # [Isa. 5:12] who drink wine in bowls
and #[Dan. 10:3]anoint themselves with the finest oils,
but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!
7 # ch. 7:11, 17 Therefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile,
and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away.”
8 #
Jer. 22:5; 51:14 The Lord God has sworn by himself, declares the Lord, the God of hosts:
“I abhor #ch. 8:7; [Ps. 47:4] the pride of Jacob
and hate his strongholds,
# [Jer. 17:3] and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.”
9And #[ch. 5:3]if ten men remain in one house, they shall die. 10And when one’s relative, #See 1 Sam. 31:12 the one who anoints him for burial, shall take him up to bring the bones out of the house, and shall say to him who is in the innermost parts of the house, “Is there still anyone with you?” he shall say, “No”; and he shall say, #[ch. 5:13; 8:3]“Silence! We must not mention the name of the Lord.”
11For behold, the Lord commands,
and #[ch. 3:15]the great house shall be struck down into fragments,
and the little house into bits.
12Do horses run on rocks?
Does one plow there#6:12 Or the sea with oxen?
# [ch. 5:7] But you have turned justice into #Deut. 29:18poison
# [ch. 5:7] and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood#6:12 Or into bitter fruit—
13you who rejoice in Lo-debar,#6:13 Lo-debar means nothing
who say, #[1 Kgs. 22:11; Mic. 4:13]“Have we not by our own strength
captured Karnaim#6:13 Karnaim means horns (a symbol of strength) for ourselves?”
14“For behold, #[Jer. 5:15] I will raise up against you a nation,
O house of Israel,” declares the Lord, the God of hosts;
“and they shall oppress you from #2 Kgs. 14:25 Lebo-hamath
to the Brook of #See Deut. 1:1the Arabah.”

At Ease in Zion
1Oy ! You who are at ease in Zion, trusting in Samaria’s hill! Distinguished ones of the foremost of nations— to whom the house of Israel comes
2Go over to Calneh and look. From there go to great Hamath, go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory larger than yours?
3Dismissing the day of calamity, you bring near the throne of violence.
4Reclining on beds of ivory, sprawling on their couches, dining on lambs from the flock and calves from amid the stall,
5chanting to the sound of harp like David, inventing their own instruments of song,
6drinking wine from bowls, anointing with choice ointments— yet they are not sickened over the breakdown of Joseph.
7Therefore now they will go into exile at the head of the exiles. Sprawling revelry will cease.
8My Lord Adonai has sworn by Himself —declares Adonai Elohei-Tzva’ot— “I loathe the arrogance of Jacob, I despise his palaces, so I will shut down the city and everything in it.”
9If ten people remain in one house, they will die.
10One’s beloved—the one burning incense for him—will lift him up to carry the bones out of the house, and he will say to one in the innermost recess of the house: “Is anyone else still with you?” And he will say: “No one.” Then he will say, “Hush! For we must not mention the Name of Adonai.”
11For behold, Adonai will command, He will smash the big house to fragments and the little house to splinters.
12Will horses run on the cliff? Will one plow there with oxen? Yet you turned justice into venom, the fruit of righteousness into wormwood.
13You are rejoicing for no reason, saying: “Haven’t we taken two horns for ourselves by our own strength?”
14“For behold, I am raising up against you, O house of Israel, a nation, and they will afflict you from Lebo-Hamath to the Valley of the Arabah.” declares Adonai, the God of Hosts.
