Preparing to Build the Temple
1 # 2:1 Ch 1:18 in Hebrew #1 Kgs. 5:5Now Solomon purposed to build a temple for the name of the Lord, and a royal palace for himself. 2#2:2 Ch 2:1 in Hebrew #ver. 18; 1 Kgs. 5:15, 16; [ch. 8:7, 8; 1 Kgs. 9:20, 21] And Solomon assigned 70,000 men to bear burdens and 80,000 to quarry in the hill country, and #[1 Kgs. 5:16]3,600 to oversee them. 3#For ver. 3-16, see 1 Kgs. 5:2-11 And Solomon sent word to Hiram the king of Tyre: #1 Chr. 14:1“As you dealt with David my father and sent him cedar to build himself a house to dwell in, so deal with me. 4Behold, I am about to build a house for the name of the Lord my God and dedicate it to him for the burning of #See Ex. 30:7 incense of sweet spices before him, and for #See Lev. 24:5-8 the regular arrangement of the showbread, and for #See Num. 28:3-8 burnt offerings morning and evening, #ch. 8:13; Num. 28:9, 11, 19, 26on the Sabbaths and the new moons and the appointed feasts of the Lord our God, as ordained forever for Israel. 5The house that I am to build will be great, #Ps. 135:5; [Ex. 15:11; 1 Chr. 16:25; Ps. 86:8]for our God is greater than all gods. 6#ch. 6:18; 1 Kgs. 8:27; Isa. 66:1; Acts 7:49But who is able to build him a house, since #ch. 6:18; 1 Kgs. 8:27; Isa. 66:1; Acts 7:49heaven, even highest heaven, cannot contain him? Who am I to build a house for him, except as a place to make offerings before him? 7So now #ver. 13, 14 send me a man skilled to work in gold, silver, bronze, and iron, and in purple, crimson, and blue fabrics, trained also in engraving, to be with the skilled workers who are with me in Judah and Jerusalem, #1 Chr. 22:15whom David my father provided. 8Send me also cedar, cypress, and algum timber from Lebanon, for I know that #ch. 9:10, 11your servants know how to cut timber in Lebanon. And my servants will be with your servants, 9to prepare timber for me in abundance, for the house I am to build will be great and wonderful. 10#[1 Kgs. 5:11]I will give for your servants, the woodsmen who cut timber, 20,000 cors#2:10 A cor was about 6 bushels or 220 liters of crushed wheat, 20,000 cors of barley, 20,000 baths#2:10 A bath was about 6 gallons or 22 liters of wine, and 20,000 baths of oil.”
11Then Hiram the king of Tyre answered in a letter that he sent to Solomon, #ch. 9:8; 1 Kgs. 10:9“Because the Lord loves his people, he has made you king over them.” 12Hiram also said, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, #See Gen. 1:1 who made heaven and earth, who has given King David a wise son, who has discretion and understanding, #[ver. 1]who will build a temple for the Lord and a royal palace for himself.
13“Now I have sent a skilled man, who has understanding, Huram-abi, 14#1 Kgs. 7:14 the son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre. He is #[ver. 7]trained to work in gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, and wood, and in purple, blue, and crimson fabrics and fine linen, and to do all sorts of engraving and execute any design that may be assigned him, with your craftsmen, the craftsmen of my lord, David your father. 15Now therefore the wheat and barley, oil and wine, #ver. 10of which my lord has spoken, let him send to his servants. 16#[1 Kgs. 5:9] And we will cut whatever timber you need from Lebanon and bring it to you in rafts by sea to #See Josh. 19:46Joppa, so that you may take it up to Jerusalem.”
17Then Solomon counted all the resident aliens who were in the land of Israel, #[1 Chr. 22:2]after the census of them that David his father had taken, and there were found 153,600. 18#See ver. 2Seventy thousand of them he assigned to bear burdens, 80,000 to quarry in the hill country, and 3,600 as overseers to make the people work.

2 Paralipomenon 2
2
1And Solomon determined to build a house to the name of the Lord, and a palace for himself.
2And he numbered out seventy thousand men to bear burdens, and eighty thousand to hew stones in the mountains, and three thousand six hundred to oversee them.
3He sent also to Hiram king of Tyre, saying: As thou didst with David my father, and didst send him cedars, to build him a house, in which he dwelt:
4So do with me: that I may build a house to the name of the Lord my God, to dedicate it to burn incense before him, and to perfume with aromatical spices, and for the continual setting forth of bread, and for the holocausts, morning and evening, and on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and the solemnities of the Lord our God for ever, which are commanded for Israel.
5For the house which I desire to build is great: for our God is great above all gods.
6Who then can be able to build him a worthy house? If heaven, and the heavens of heavens cannot contain him: who am I that I should be able to build him a house? But to this end only, that incense may be burnt before him.
7Send me therefore a skilful man, that knoweth how to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, and in iron, in purple, in scarlet and in blue, and that hath skill in engraving, with the artificers, which I have with me in Judea and Jerusalem, whom David my father provided.
8Send me also cedars, and fir-trees, and pine-trees from Libanus: for I know that thy servants are skilful in cutting timber in Libanus. And my servants shall be with thy servants,
9To provide me timber in abundance. For the house which I desire to build is to be exceeding great, and glorious.
10And I will give thy servants the workmen that are to cut down the trees, for their food, twenty thousand cores of wheat, and as many cores of barley, and twenty thousand measures of wine, and twenty thousand measures of oil.
11And Hiram king of Tyre sent a letter to Solomon, saying: Because the Lord hath loved his people, therefore he hath made thee king over them.
12And he added, saying: Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth, who hath given to king David a wise and knowing son, endued with understanding and prudence, to build a house to the Lord, and a palace for himself.
13I therefore have sent thee my father, Hiram, a wise and most skilful man,
14The son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, whose father was a Tyrian, who knoweth how to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, and in iron, and in marble, and in timber, in purple also, and violet, and silk and scarlet: and who knoweth to grave all sort of graving, and to devise ingeniously all that there may be need of in the work with thy artificers, and with the artificers of my lord David thy father.
15The wheat therefore, and the barley and the oil, and the wine, which thou, my lord, hast promised, send to thy servants.
16And we will cut down as many trees out of Libanus, as thou shalt want, and will convey them in floats by sea to Joppe: and it will be thy part to bring them thence to Jerusalem.
17And Solomon numbered all the proselytes in the land of Israel, after the numbering which David his father had made: and they were found a hundred and fifty-three thousand and six hundred.
18And he set seventy thousand of them to carry burdens on their shoulders: and eighty thousand to hew stones in the mountains: and three thousand and six hundred to be overseers of the work of the people.
