The Philistines Reject David
1 # ch. 28:1 Now the Philistines had gathered all their forces at #ch. 4:1; Josh. 12:18 Aphek. And the Israelites were encamped by #Judg. 7:1 the spring that is in #Josh. 17:16Jezreel. 2As #Josh. 13:3 the lords of the Philistines were passing on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were passing on in the rear #ch. 28:1, 2with Achish, 3the commanders of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul, king of Israel, who has been with me #[ch. 27:7] now for days and years, and since he deserted to me #[Dan. 6:5]I have found no fault in him to this day.” 4But #[See ver. 2 above] the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him. And the commanders of the Philistines said to him, “Send the man back, that he may return #ch. 27:6; 30:1 to the place to which you have assigned him. He shall not go down with us to battle, #[ch. 14:21]lest in the battle he become an adversary to us. For how could this fellow reconcile himself to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of the men here? 5Is not this David, of whom they sing to one another in dances,
# ch. 18:7; 21:11 ‘Saul has struck down his thousands,
and David his ten thousands’?”
6Then Achish called David and said to him, #See ch. 20:3 “As the Lord lives, you have been honest, and to me it seems right that #2 Sam. 3:25; 2 Kgs. 19:27; Ps. 121:8; Isa. 37:28you should march out and in with me in the campaign. For I have found nothing wrong in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, the lords do not approve of you. 7So go back now; and go peaceably, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.” 8And David said to Achish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant from the day I entered your service until now, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?” 9And Achish answered David and said, “I know that you are as blameless in my sight #2 Sam. 14:17, 20; 19:27 as an angel of God. Nevertheless, #Josh. 13:3the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’ 10Now then rise early in the morning #[1 Chr. 12:19, 22]with the servants of your lord who came with you, and start early in the morning, and depart as soon as you have light.” 11So David set out with his men early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. But the Philistines went up to #Josh. 17:16Jezreel.

1 Samuel 29
29
1And the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek; and Israel encamped by the spring that is in Jizreel. 2And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds and by thousands; and David and his men passed on in the rearward with Achish. 3And the princes of the Philistines said, What are these Hebrews? And Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or these years, and I have found nothing in him since the day of his falling away to me to this day? 4But the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said to him, Make the man return, that he may go again to his place where thou hast appointed him, that he go not down with us to the battle, that in the battle he be not an adversary to us; for wherewith should this fellow reconcile himself to his master? should it not be with the heads of these men? 5Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul smote his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
6And Achish called David, and said to him, As Jehovah liveth, thou art upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the camp is acceptable to me; for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming to me to this day; but thou art not acceptable to the lords. 7And now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines. 8And David said to Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee to this day, that I should not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king? 9And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art acceptable to me, as an angel of God#GodHebrew: Elohim nevertheless the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle. 10And now rise up early in the morning with thy master's servants that are come with thee; and rise ye early in the morning, and when ye have daylight, depart. 11And David rose up early, he and his men, to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jizreel.
