1 Samuel 29

The Philistines Reject David
1 # ch. 28:1 Now the Philistines had gathered all their forces at #ch. 4:1; Josh. 12:18 Aphek. And the Israelites were encamped by #Judg. 7:1 the spring that is in #Josh. 17:16Jezreel. 2As #Josh. 13:3 the lords of the Philistines were passing on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were passing on in the rear #ch. 28:1, 2with Achish, 3the commanders of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul, king of Israel, who has been with me #[ch. 27:7] now for days and years, and since he deserted to me #[Dan. 6:5]I have found no fault in him to this day.” 4But #[See ver. 2 above] the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him. And the commanders of the Philistines said to him, “Send the man back, that he may return #ch. 27:6; 30:1 to the place to which you have assigned him. He shall not go down with us to battle, #[ch. 14:21]lest in the battle he become an adversary to us. For how could this fellow reconcile himself to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of the men here? 5Is not this David, of whom they sing to one another in dances,
# ch. 18:7; 21:11 ‘Saul has struck down his thousands,
and David his ten thousands’?”
6Then Achish called David and said to him, #See ch. 20:3 “As the Lord lives, you have been honest, and to me it seems right that #2 Sam. 3:25; 2 Kgs. 19:27; Ps. 121:8; Isa. 37:28you should march out and in with me in the campaign. For I have found nothing wrong in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, the lords do not approve of you. 7So go back now; and go peaceably, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.” 8And David said to Achish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant from the day I entered your service until now, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?” 9And Achish answered David and said, “I know that you are as blameless in my sight #2 Sam. 14:17, 20; 19:27 as an angel of God. Nevertheless, #Josh. 13:3the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’ 10Now then rise early in the morning #[1 Chr. 12:19, 22]with the servants of your lord who came with you, and start early in the morning, and depart as soon as you have light.” 11So David set out with his men early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. But the Philistines went up to #Josh. 17:16Jezreel.

I Samuel 29

The Philistines Reject David
1Then #Judg. 12:3; 1 Sam. 19:5; Job 13:14the Philistines gathered together all their armies #1 Sam. 28:1at Aphek, and the Israelites encamped by a fountain which is in Jezreel. 2And the #Josh. 12:18; 19:30; 1 Sam. 4:1; 1 Kin. 20:30lords of the Philistines passed in review by hundreds and by thousands, but #1 Sam. 6:4; 7:7David and his men passed in review at the rear with Achish. 3Then the princes of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?”
And Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul king of Israel, who has been with me #1 Sam. 28:1, 2these days, or these years? And to this day I have #1 Sam. 27:7found no fault in him since he defected to me.”
4But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; so the princes of the Philistines said to him, #1 Sam. 27:1–6; 1 Chr. 12:19, 20; Dan. 6:5“Make this fellow return, that he may go back to the place which you have appointed for him, and do not let him go down with us to #1 Sam. 27:6battle, lest #1 Sam. 14:21in the battle he become our adversary. For with what could he reconcile himself to his master, if not with the heads of these #1 Sam. 29:9men? 5Is this not David, #1 Chr. 12:19, 20of whom they sang to one another in dances, saying:
#1 Sam. 21:11‘Saul has slain his thousands,
And David his ten thousands’?”
6Then Achish called David and said to him, “Surely, as the Lord lives, you have been upright, and #1 Sam. 18:7your going out and your coming in with me in the army is good in my sight. For to this day #2 Sam. 3:25; 2 Kin. 19:27I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me. Nevertheless the lords do not favor you. 7Therefore return now, and go in peace, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.”
8So David said to Achish, “But what have I done? And to this day what have you found in your servant as long as I have been with you, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
9Then Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are as good in my sight #1 Sam. 29:3as an angel of God; nevertheless #2 Sam. 14:17, 20; 19:27the princes of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’ 10Now therefore, rise early in the morning with your master’s servants #1 Sam. 29:4who have come with you. And as soon as you are up early in the morning and have light, depart.”
11So David and his men rose early to depart in the morning, to return to the land of the Philistines. #1 Chr. 12:19, 22And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
