Saul Defeats the Ammonites
1 # ch. 12:12 Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged #Judg. 21:8 Jabesh-gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, #Gen. 26:28; 1 Kgs. 20:34; Ezek. 17:13; [Ex. 23:32; 34:12, 15; Deut. 7:2]“Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.” 2But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, #[Num. 16:14] that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus #ch. 17:26; Gen. 34:14bring disgrace on all Israel.” 3The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days’ respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.” 4When the messengers came to #ch. 10:26 Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, #Judg. 2:4; 21:2and all the people wept aloud.
5Now, behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. And Saul said, “What is wrong with the people, that they are weeping?” So they told him the news of the men of Jabesh. 6#See ch. 10:6, 10And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. 7He took a yoke of oxen #[Judg. 19:29] and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, #Judg. 21:5, 8, 10 “Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!” Then the dread of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out #Judg. 20:1as one man. 8When he mustered them at #Judg. 1:5 Bezek, #[Judg. 20:15-17; 2 Sam. 24:9]the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have #ver. 13salvation.’” When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. 10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, #ver. 3“Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.” 11#[ch. 31:11] And the next day Saul put the people #Judg. 7:16in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
The Kingdom Is Renewed
12Then the people said to Samuel, #ch. 10:27 “Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ #[Luke 19:27]Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” 13But Saul said, #2 Sam. 19:22 “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today #[ch. 19:5; Ex. 14:13] the Lord has worked #ver. 9salvation in Israel.” 14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.” 15So all the people went to #ch. 10:8 Gilgal, and there they made Saul king #ch. 15:33; [ch. 10:17; Judg. 11:11] before the Lord in Gilgal. There #ch. 10:8they sacrificed peace offerings before the Lord, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

10Then the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Tomorrow we will come out, and you can do whatever you want # Lit do what is good in your eyes to us.”
11The next day Saul organized the troops into three divisions. # Jdg 7:16 During the morning watch, they invaded the Ammonite camp and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. There were survivors, but they were so scattered that no two of them were left together.

12Afterward, the people said to Samuel, “Who said that Saul should not # Some Hb mss, LXX; other Hb mss omit not reign over us? # 1Sm 10:27 Give us those men so we can kill them! ” # Lk 19:27
13But Saul ordered, “No one will be executed this day, for today the Lord has provided deliverance in Israel.” # Ex 14:13; 1Sm 19:5
14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let’s go to Gilgal, so we can renew the kingship there.” 15So all the people went to Gilgal, and there in the Lord’s presence # 1Sm 10:17 they made Saul king.
