Saul Defeats the Ammonites
1 # ch. 12:12 Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged #Judg. 21:8 Jabesh-gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, #Gen. 26:28; 1 Kgs. 20:34; Ezek. 17:13; [Ex. 23:32; 34:12, 15; Deut. 7:2]“Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.” 2But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, #[Num. 16:14] that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus #ch. 17:26; Gen. 34:14bring disgrace on all Israel.” 3The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days’ respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.” 4When the messengers came to #ch. 10:26 Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, #Judg. 2:4; 21:2and all the people wept aloud.
5Now, behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. And Saul said, “What is wrong with the people, that they are weeping?” So they told him the news of the men of Jabesh. 6#See ch. 10:6, 10And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. 7He took a yoke of oxen #[Judg. 19:29] and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, #Judg. 21:5, 8, 10 “Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!” Then the dread of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out #Judg. 20:1as one man. 8When he mustered them at #Judg. 1:5 Bezek, #[Judg. 20:15-17; 2 Sam. 24:9]the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have #ver. 13salvation.’” When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. 10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, #ver. 3“Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.” 11#[ch. 31:11] And the next day Saul put the people #Judg. 7:16in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
The Kingdom Is Renewed
12Then the people said to Samuel, #ch. 10:27 “Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ #[Luke 19:27]Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” 13But Saul said, #2 Sam. 19:22 “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today #[ch. 19:5; Ex. 14:13] the Lord has worked #ver. 9salvation in Israel.” 14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.” 15So all the people went to #ch. 10:8 Gilgal, and there they made Saul king #ch. 15:33; [ch. 10:17; Judg. 11:11] before the Lord in Gilgal. There #ch. 10:8they sacrificed peace offerings before the Lord, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Nahash Troubles Jabesh Gilead
1About a month later Nahash the Ammonite and his army surrounded the city of Jabesh in Gilead. All the people of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.”
2But he answered, “I will make a treaty with you only if I’m allowed to poke out the right eye of each of you. Then all Israel will be ashamed!”
3The elders of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Give us seven days to send messengers through all Israel. If no one comes to help us, we will give ourselves up to you.”
4When the messengers came to Gibeah where Saul lived and told the people the news, they cried loudly. 5Saul was coming home from plowing the fields with his oxen when he heard the people crying. He asked, “What’s wrong with the people that they are crying?” Then they told Saul what the messengers from Jabesh had said. 6When Saul heard their words, God’s Spirit rushed upon him with power, and he became very angry. 7So he took a pair of oxen and cut them into pieces. Then he gave the pieces of the oxen to messengers and ordered them to carry them through all the land of Israel.
The messengers said, “This is what will happen to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel.” So the people became very afraid of the Lord. They all came together as if they were one person. 8Saul gathered the people together at Bezek. There were three hundred thousand men from Israel and thirty thousand men from Judah.
9They said to the messengers who had come, “Tell the people at Jabesh Gilead this: ‘Before the day warms up tomorrow, you will be saved.’ ” So the messengers went and reported this to the people at Jabesh, and they were very happy. 10The people said to Nahash the Ammonite, “Tomorrow we will come out to meet you. Then you can do anything you want to us.”
11The next morning Saul divided his soldiers into three groups. At dawn they entered the Ammonite camp and defeated them before the heat of the day. The Ammonites who escaped were scattered; no two of them were still together.
12Then the people said to Samuel, “Who didn’t want Saul as king? Bring them here and we will kill them!”
13But Saul said, “No! No one will be put to death today. Today the Lord has saved Israel!”
14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let’s go to Gilgal. There we will again promise to obey the king.” 15So all the people went to Gilgal, and there, before the Lord, the people made Saul king. They offered fellowship offerings to the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites had a great celebration.
