Jeremias (Jeremiah) 46
46
1The word of the Lord that came to Jeremias the prophet against the Gentiles,
2Against Egypt, against the army of Pharao Nechao king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Charcamis, whom Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon defeated, in the fourth year of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda.
3Prepare ye the shield and buckler, and go forth to battle.
4Harness the horses, and get up, ye horsemen. Stand forth with helmets, furbish the spears, put on coats of mail.
5What then? I have seen them dismayed and turning their backs, their valiant ones slain. They fled apace and they looked not back: terror was round about, saith the Lord.
6Let not the swift flee away nor the strong think to escape: they are overthrown and fallen down, towards the north, by the river Euphrates.
7Who is this that cometh up as a flood: and his streams swell like those of rivers?
8Egypt riseth up like a flood, and the waves thereof shall be moved as rivers. And he shall say: I will go up and will cover the earth. I will destroy the city and its inhabitants.
9Get ye up on horses and glory in chariots: and let the valiant men come forth, the Ethiopians and the Libyans that hold the shield and the Lydians that take and shoot arrows.
10For this is the day of the Lord the God of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may revenge himself of his enemies. The sword shall devour and shall be filled and shall be drunk with their blood: for there is a sacrifice of the Lord God of hosts in the north country, by the river Euphrates.
11Go up into Galaad and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt: in vain dost thou multiply medicines. There shall be no cure for thee.
12The nations have heard of thy disgrace and thy howling hath filled the land: for the strong hath stumbled against the strong, and both are fallen together.
13The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremias the prophet, how Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon should come and strike the land of Egypt:
14Declare ye to Egypt and publish it in Magdal, and let it be known in Memphis and in Taphnis. Say ye: Stand up, and prepare thyself: for the sword shall devour all round about thee.
15Why are thy valiant men come to nothing? They stood not: because the Lord hath overthrown them.
16He hath multiplied them that fall, and one hath fallen upon another. And they shall say: Arise, and let us return to our own people and to the land our nativity, from the sword of the dove.
17Call ye the name of Pharao king Egypt: a tumult time hath brought.
18 As I live (saith the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts), as Thabor is among the mountains and as Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.
19Furnish thyself to go into captivity, thou daughter inhabitant of Egypt: for Memphis shall be made desolate and shall be forsaken and uninhabited.
20Egypt is like a fair and beautiful heifer: there shall come from the north one that shall goad her.
21Her hirelings also that lived in the midst of her, like fatted calves are turned back, and are fled away together. And they could not stand: for the day of their slaughter is come upon them, the time of their visitation.
22Her voice shall sound like brass: for they shall hasten with an army, and with axes they shall come against her, as hewers of wood.
23They have cut down her forest, saith the Lord, which cannot be counted: they are multiplied above locusts and are without number.
24The daughter of Egypt is confounded and delivered into the hand of the people of the north.
25The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, hath said: Behold, I will visit upon the tumult of Alexandria and upon Pharao and upon Egypt and upon her gods and upon her kings and upon Pharao upon them that trust in him.
26And I will deliver them into the hand of them that seek their lives into the hand of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon and into the hand of his servants: and afterwards it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the Lord.
27And thou, my servant Jacob, fear not, and be not thou dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed out of the land of thy captivity. And Jacob shall return and be at rest and prosper: and there shall be none to terrify him.
28And thou, my servant Jacob, fear not, saith the Lord: because I am with thee. For I will consume all the nations to which I have cast thee out: but thee I will not consume. But I will correct thee in judgment: neither will I spare thee, as if thou wert innocent.

Jeremiah 46

Judgment on Egypt
1The word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah the prophet against #Jer. 25:15the nations. 2Against #Jer. 25:17–19; Ezek. 29:2—32:32Egypt.
#2 Kin. 23:33–35Concerning the army of Pharaoh Necho, king of Egypt, which was by the River Euphrates in Carchemish, and which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon #2 Kin. 23:29; 24:7; 2 Chr. 35:20defeated in the #Jer. 45:1fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:
3“Order the buckler and shield,
And draw near to battle!
4Harness the horses,
And mount up, you horsemen!
Stand forth with your helmets,
Polish the spears,
#Is. 21:5; Jer. 51:11, 12; Joel 3:9; Nah. 2:1; 3:14Put on the armor!
5Why have I seen them dismayed and turned back?
Their mighty ones are beaten down;
They have speedily fled,
And did not look back,
For #Jer. 49:29fear was all around,” says the Lord.
6“Do not let the swift flee away,
Nor the mighty man escape;
They will #Jer. 46:12, 16; Dan. 11:19stumble and fall
Toward the north, by the River Euphrates.
7“Who is this coming up #Is. 8:7, 8; Jer. 47:2; Dan. 11:22like a flood,
Whose waters move like the rivers?
8Egypt rises up like a flood,
And its waters move like the rivers;
And he says, ‘I will go up and cover the earth,
I will destroy the city and its inhabitants.’
9Come up, O horses, and rage, O chariots!
And let the mighty men come forth:
The Ethiopians and the Libyans who handle the shield,
And the Lydians #Is. 66:19who handle and bend the bow.
10For this is #Is. 13:6; Joel 1:15the day of the Lord God of hosts,
A day of vengeance,
That He may avenge Himself on His adversaries.
#Deut. 32:42; Is. 31:8; Jer. 12:12The sword shall devour;
It shall be satiated and made drunk with their blood;
For the Lord God of hosts #Is. 34:6; Zeph. 1:7; Ezek. 39:17has a sacrifice
In the north country by the River Euphrates.
11“Go#Jer. 8:22 up to Gilead and take balm,
#Is. 47:1; Jer. 31:4, 21O virgin, the daughter of Egypt;
In vain you will use many medicines;
#Ezek. 30:21You shall not be cured.
12The nations have heard of your #Jer. 2:36; Nah. 3:8–10shame,
And your cry has filled the land;
For the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty;
They both have fallen together.”
Babylonia Will Strike Egypt
13The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon would come and #Is. 19:1; Jer. 43:10, 11; Ezek. 29:1–21strike the land of Egypt.
14“Declare in Egypt, and proclaim in #Jer. 44:1Migdol;
Proclaim in Noph and in #Ezek. 30:18Tahpanhes;
Say, ‘Stand fast and prepare yourselves,
For the sword devours all around you.’
15Why are your valiant men swept away?
They did not stand
Because the Lord drove them away.
16He made many fall;
Yes, #Lev. 26:36, 37; Jer. 46:6one fell upon another.
And they said, ‘Arise!
#Jer. 51:9Let us go back to our own people
And to the land of our nativity
From the oppressing sword.’
17They cried there,
‘Pharaoh, king of Egypt, is but a noise.
He has passed by the appointed time!’
18“As I live,” says the King,
#Is. 47:4; Jer. 48:15; Mal. 1:14Whose name is the Lord of hosts,
“Surely as Tabor is among the mountains
And as Carmel by the sea, so he shall come.
19O #Jer. 48:18you daughter dwelling in Egypt,
Prepare yourself #Is. 20:4to go into captivity!
For Noph shall be waste and desolate, without inhabitant.
20“Egypt is a very pretty #Hos. 10:11heifer,
But destruction comes, it comes #Jer. 1:14from the north.
21Also her mercenaries are in her midst like fat bulls,
For they also are turned back,
They have fled away together.
They did not stand,
For #(Ps. 37:13); Jer. 50:27the day of their calamity had come upon them,
The time of their punishment.
22#(Is. 29:4)Her noise shall go like a serpent,
For they shall march with an army
And come against her with axes,
Like those who chop wood.
23“They shall #Is. 10:34cut down her forest,” says the Lord,
“Though it cannot be searched,
Because they are innumerable,
And more numerous than #Judg. 6:5; 7:12; Joel 2:25grasshoppers.
24The daughter of Egypt shall be ashamed;
She shall be delivered into the hand
Of #Jer. 1:15the people of the north.”
25The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will bring punishment on Amon of #Ezek. 30:14–16; Nah. 3:8No, and Pharaoh and Egypt, #Ex. 12:12; Jer. 43:12, 13; Ezek. 30:13; Zeph. 2:11with their gods and their kings—Pharaoh and those who #Is. 30:1–5; 31:1–3trust in him. 26#Jer. 44:30; Ezek. 32:11And I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their lives, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of his servants. #Ezek. 29:8–14Afterward it shall be inhabited as in the days of old,” says the Lord.
God Will Preserve Israel
27“But#Is. 41:13, 14; 43:5; 44:2; Jer. 30:10, 11 do not fear, O My servant Jacob,
And do not be dismayed, O Israel!
For behold, I will #Is. 11:11; Jer. 23:3, 4; Mic. 7:12save you from afar,
And your offspring from the land of their captivity;
Jacob shall return, have rest and be at ease;
No one shall make him afraid.
28Do not fear, O Jacob My servant,” says the Lord,
“For I am with you;
For I will make a complete end of all the nations
To which I have driven you,
But I will not make #Jer. 10:24; Amos 9:8, 9a complete end of you.
I will rightly #Jer. 30:11correct you,
For I will not leave you wholly unpunished.”
