Jeremias (Jeremiah) 43
43
1And it came to pass, that when Jeremias had made an end of speaking to the people all the words of the Lord their God, for which the Lord their God had sent him to them, all these words:
2Azarias the son of Osaias and Johanan the son of Caree and all the proud men made answer, saying to Jeremias: Thou tellest a lie. The Lord our God hath not sent thee, saying: Go not into Egypt to dwell there.
3But Baruch the son of Nerias setteth thee on against us, to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, to kill us and to cause us to be carried away captives to Babylon.
4So Johanan the son of Caree and all the captains of the soldiers and all the people obeyed not the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Juda.
5But Johanan the son of Caree and all the captains of the soldiers took all the remnant of Juda that were returned out of all nations to which they had before been scattered, to dwell in the land of Juda:
6Men and women and children and the king's daughters and every soul which Nabuzardan the general had left with Godolias the son of Ahicam the son of Saphan, and Jeremias the prophet, and Baruch the son of Nerias.
7And they went Into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of the Lord. And they came as far as Taphnis.
8And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias in Taphnis, saying:
9Take great stones in thy hand, and thou shalt hide them in the vault that is under the brick wall at the gate of Pharao's house in Taphnis, in the sight of the men of Juda.
10And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon my servant and I will set his throne over these stones which I have hid. And he shall set his throne over them.
11And he shall come and strike the land of Egypt: such as are for death, to death: and such as are for captivity, to captivity: and such as are for the sword, to the sword.
12And he shall kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt: and he shall burn them: and he shall carry them away captives. And he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd putteth on his garment: and he shall go forth from thence in peace.
13And he shall break the statues of the house of the sun that are in the land of Egypt; and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.

Jeremiah 43

Jeremiah is Taken to Egypt
1I finished telling the people everything that the LORD their God had sent me to tell them. 2Then Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the other arrogant men said to me, “You are lying. The LORD our God did not send you to tell us not to go and live in Egypt. 3Baruch son of Neriah has stirred you up against us, so that the Babylonians will gain power over us and can either kill us or take us away to Babylonia.” 4So neither Johanan nor any of the army officers nor any of the people would obey the LORD's command to remain in the land of Judah. 5#2 Kgs 25.26Then Johanan and all the army officers took everybody left in Judah away to Egypt, together with all the people who had returned from the nations where they had been scattered: 6the men, the women, the children, and the king's daughters. They took everyone whom Nebuzaradan the commanding officer had left under the care of Gedaliah, including Baruch and me. 7They disobeyed the LORD's command and went into Egypt as far as the city of Tahpanhes.
8There the LORD said to me, 9“Get some large stones and bury them in the mortar of the pavement#43.9 Probable text bury them… pavement; Hebrew unclear. in front of the entrance to the government building here in the city, and let some of the Israelites see you do it. 10Then tell them that I, the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, am going to bring my servant King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia to this place, and he#43.10 Some ancient translations he; Hebrew I. will put his throne over these stones that you#43.10 Some ancient translations you; Hebrew I. buried, and will spread the royal tent over them. 11Nebuchadnezzar will come and defeat Egypt. Those people who are doomed to die of disease will die of disease, those doomed to be taken away as prisoners will be taken away as prisoners, and those doomed to be killed in war will be killed in war. 12I will set fire to the temples of Egypt's gods, and the king of Babylonia will either burn their gods or carry them off. As shepherds pick their clothes clean of lice, so the king of Babylonia will pick the land of Egypt clean and then leave victorious. 13He will destroy the sacred stone monuments at Heliopolis in Egypt and will burn down the temples of the Egyptian gods.”
