Jeremias (Jeremiah) 17
17
1The sin of Juda is written with a pen of iron, with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the table of their heart, upon the horns of their altars.
2When their children shall remember their altars and their groves and their green trees upon high mountains,
3Sacrificing in the field: I will give thy strength and all thy treasures to the spoil, and thy high places for sin in all thy borders.
4And thou shalt be left stripped of thy inheritance which I gave thee: and I will make thee serve thy enemies in a land which thou knowest not. Because thou hast kindled a fire in my wrath, it shall burn for ever.
5Thus saith the Lord: Cursed be the man that trusteth in man and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord!
6For he shall be like tamaric in the desert, and he shall not see when good shall come: but he shall dwell in dryness in the desert, in a salt land, and not inhabited.
7Blessed be the man that trusteth in the Lord, and the Lord shall be his confidence.
8And he shall be as a tree that is planted by the waters, that spreadeth out its roots towards moisture: and it shall not fear when the heat cometh. And the leaf thereof shall be green, and in the time of drought it shall not be solicitous: neither shall it cease at any time to bring forth fruit.
9The heart is perverse above all things and unsearchable. Who can know it?
10I am the Lord who search the heart and prove the reins: who give to every one according to his way and according to the fruit of his devices.
11 As the partridge hath hatched eggs which she did not lay: so is he that hath gathered riches, and not by right. In the midst of his days he shall leave them: and in his latter end he shall be a fool.
12A high and glorious throne from the beginning is the place of our sanctification:
13O Lord, the hope of Israel: all that forsake thee shall be confounded: they that depart from thee shall be written in the earth: because they have forsaken the Lord, the vein of living waters.
14Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed: save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.
15Behold, they say to me: Where is the word of the Lord? let it come.
16And I am not troubled, following thee for my pastor: and I have not desired the day of man, thou knowest. That which went out of my lips hath been right in thy sight.
17Be not thou a terror unto me: thou art my hope in the day of affliction.
18Let them be confounded that persecute me, and let not me be confounded: let them be afraid and let not me be afraid, bring upon them the day of affliction and with a double destruction destroy them.
19Thus saith the Lord to me: Go, and stand in the gate of the children of the people, by which the kings of Juda come in and go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem.
20And thou shalt say to them: Hear the word of the Lord, ye kings of Juda, and all Juda, and all the inhabitant of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates.
21Thus saith the Lord: Take heed to your souls and carry no burdens on the Sabbath day: and bring them not in by the gates of Jerusalem.
22And do not bring burdens out of your houses on the sabbath day: neither do ye any work. Sanctify the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.
23But they did not hear nor incline their ear: but hardened their neck, that they might not hear me and might not receive instruction.
24And it shall come to pass, if you will hearken to me, saith the Lord, to bring in no burdens by the gates of this city on the sabbath day, and if you will sanctify the sabbath day to do no work therein:
25Then shall there enter in by the gates of this city kings and princes, sitting upon the throne of David and riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Juda and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall be inhabited for ever.
26And they shall come from the cities of Juda and from the places round about Jerusalem and from the land of Benjamin and from the plains and from the mountains and from the south, bringing holocausts and victims and sacrifices and frankincense: and they shall bring in an offering into the house of the Lord.
27But if you will not hearken to me, to sanctify the sabbath day, and not to carry burdens, and not to bring them in by the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day: I will kindle a fire in the gates thereof. And it shall devour the houses of Jerusalem: and it shall not be quenched.

Jeremiah 17
17
The Deceitful Heart
1The sin of Judah is written down with an iron stylus;
With a diamond point it is engraved upon the tablet of their heart
And on the horns of their altars.
2As they remember their children,
So they remember [in detail] their [pagan] altars and their #17:2 Wooden carvings of the goddess Asherah.Asherim
Beside green trees on the high hills.
3O [Jerusalem] My mountain in the countryside,
I will give [to the Babylonians, as the cost of your sin] your wealth and all your treasures as plunder,
And throughout your territory, your high places of sin.
4And you will, through your own fault, let go of your [grip on your] inheritance
That I gave you;
And I will make you serve your enemies
In a land which you do not know;
For you have kindled a fire in My anger
Which will burn forever.
5¶Thus says the Lord,
“Cursed is the man who trusts in and relies on mankind,
Making [weak, faulty human] flesh his strength,
And whose mind and heart turn away from the Lord.
6“For he will be like a shrub in the [parched] desert;
And shall not see prosperity when it comes,
But shall live in the rocky places of the wilderness,
In an uninhabited salt land.
7“Blessed [with spiritual security] is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord
And whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord.
8“For he will be [nourished] like a tree planted by the waters,
That spreads out its roots by the river;
And will not fear the heat when it comes;
But its leaves will be green and moist.
And it will not be anxious and concerned in a year of drought
Nor stop bearing fruit.
9¶“The heart is deceitful above all things
And it is #17:9 Lit incurable.extremely sick;
Who can understand it fully and know its secret motives? [Matt 13:15-17; Mark 7:21-23; Eph 4:20-24]
10“I, the Lord, search and examine the mind,
I test the heart,
To give to each man according to his ways,
According to the results of his deeds.
11“Like the partridge that hatches eggs which she has not laid,
So is he who makes a fortune in ways that are unjust.
It will be lost to him before his days are over,
And in the end he will be [nothing but] a fool.”
12¶A glorious throne, set on high from the beginning,
Is the place of our sanctuary (the temple).
13O Lord, the hope of Israel,
All who abandon You will be shamed.
Those who turn away on earth will be written down,
Because they have abandoned the Lord, the fountain of living waters.
14Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed;
Save me and I will be saved,
For You are my praise.
15Behold, they keep saying to me,
“Where is the word of the Lord [that is, the disaster that you prophesied]?
Let it come now!”
16But as for me, I have not tried to escape from being a shepherd [walking] after You,
Nor have I longed for the woeful day [of judgment];
You know that, whatever I said
Was [spoken] in Your presence and was from You.
17Do not be a terror to me;
You are my refuge and my hope in the day of disaster.
18Let those who persecute me be shamed, but as for me, protect me from shame;
Let them lose courage, but let me be undaunted.
Bring on them a day of tragedy,
And destroy them with double destruction!
The Sabbath Must Be Kept
19Thus the Lord said to me, “Go and stand in the #17:19 Lit gate of the sons of the people.public gate, through which the kings of Judah come in and go out, and [stand] also in all the gates of Jerusalem; 20and say to them, ‘Listen to the word of the Lord, kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the people of Jerusalem who enter through these gates. 21Thus says the Lord, “Pay attention for your own good, [and for the sake of your future] do not carry any load on the Sabbath day or bring anything in through the gates of Jerusalem. 22You shall not carry a load out of your houses on the Sabbath day nor do any work, but keep the Sabbath day holy [by setting it apart as a day of worship], as I commanded your fathers. 23Yet they would not listen and obey and control their behavior; but they were stiff-necked in order not to hear and take instruction.
24But it will come about, if you listen diligently to Me,” says the Lord, “to bring no load in through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but keep the Sabbath day holy by doing no work on it, 25then kings and princes who will sit on the throne of David will enter through the gates of this city, riding in chariots and on horses—the kings and their princes, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city will be inhabited and endure throughout the ages. 26People will come from the cities of Judah and the places all around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, from the lowland, from the hill country and from the South (the Negev), bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and incense, and bringing sacrifices of thanksgiving to the house of the Lord. 27But if you will not listen to Me and keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying a load as you come in the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in her gates that cannot be extinguished, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem.” ’ ”
