2 Kings 22
22
1And David spoke to the Lord the words of this canticle, in the day that the Lord delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul,
2And he said: The Lord is my rock, and my strength, and my saviour.
3God is my strong one, in him will I trust: my shield, and the horn of my salvation. He lifteth me up, and is my refuge: my saviour, thou wilt deliver me from iniquity.
4I will call on the Lord who is worthy to be praised: and I shall be saved from my enemies.
5For the pangs of death have surrounded me: the floods of Belial have made me afraid.
6The cords of hell compassed me: the snares of death prevented me.
7In my distress I will call upon the Lord, and I will cry to my God: and he will hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry shall come to his ears.
8The earth shook and trembled, the foundations of the mountains were moved, and shaken: because he was angry with them.
9A smoke went up from his nostrils, and a devouring fire out of his mouth: coals were kindled by it.
10He bowed the heavens, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.
11And he rode upon the cherubims, and flew: and slid upon the wings of the wind.
12He made darkness a covering round about him: dropping waters out of the clouds of the heavens.
13By the brightness before him, the coals of fire were kindled.
14The Lord shall thunder from heaven: and the Most High shall give forth his voice.
15He shot arrows and scattered them: lightning, and consumed them.
16And the overflowings of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were laid open at the rebuke of the Lord: at the blast of the spirit of his wrath.
17He sent from on high, and took me: and drew me out of many waters.
18He delivered me from my most mighty enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.
19He prevented me in the day of my affliction: and the Lord became my stay.
20And he brought me forth into a large place: he delivered me, because I pleased him.
21The Lord will reward me according to my justice: and according to the cleanness of my hands he will render to me.
22Because I have kept the ways of the Lord: and have not wickedly departed from my God.
23For all his judgments are in my sight: and his precepts I have not removed from me.
24And I shall be perfect with him: and shall keep myself from my iniquity.
25And the Lord will recompense me according to my justice: and according to the cleanness of my hands in the sight of his eyes.
26With the holy one thou wilt be holy: and with the valiant perfect.
27With the elect thou wilt be elect: and with the perverse thou wilt be perverted.
28And the poor people thou wilt save: and with thy eyes thou wilt humble the haughty.
29For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and thou, O Lord, wilt enlighten my darkness.
30For in thee I will run girded: in my God I will leap over the wall.
31God, his way is immaculate, the word of the Lord is tried by fire: he is the shield of all that trust in him.
32Who is God but the Lord: and who is strong but our God?
33God who hath girded me with strength, and made my way perfect.
34Making my feet like the feet of harts, and setting me upon my high places.
35He teacheth my hands to war: and maketh my arms like a bow of brass.
36Thou hast given me the shield of my salvation: and thy mildness hath multiplied me.
37Thou shalt enlarge my steps under me: and my ankles shall not fail.
38I will pursue after my enemies, and crush them: and will not return again till I consume them.
39I will consume them and break them in pieces, so that they shall not rise: they shall fall under my feet.
40Thou hast girded me with strength to battle: thou hast made them that resisted me to bow under me.
41My enemies thou hast made to turn their back to me: them that hated me, and I shall destroy them.
42They shall cry, and there shall be none to save: to the Lord, and he shall not hear them.
43I shall beat them as small as the dust of the earth: I shall crush them and spread them abroad like the mire of the streets.
44Thou wilt save me from the contradictions of my people; thou wilt keep me to be the head of the Gentiles: the people which I know not shall serve me,
45The sons of the stranger will resist me: at the hearing of the ear they will obey me.
46The strangers are melted away: and shall be straitened in their distresses.
47The Lord liveth, and my God is blessed: and the strong God of my salvation shall be exalted.
48God who giveth me revenge, and bringest down people under me:
49Who bringest me forth from my enemies, and liftest me up from them that resist me. From the wicked man thou shalt deliver me.
50Therefore will I give thanks to thee, O Lord, among the Gentiles: and will sing to thy name.
51Giving great salvation to his king: and shewing mercy to David his anointed, and to his seed for ever.

David’s Song of Praise to the Lord
1 # 22:1 Chapter 22 This song is also found in Ps. 18. David sang this song to the Lord when the Lord saved him from Saul and all his other enemies.
2The Lord is my Rock, my fortress, my place of safety.
3He is my God, the Rock I run to for protection.
He is my shield; by his power I am saved.#22:3 by his power I am saved Literally, “He is the horn of my salvation.”
He is my hiding place, my place of safety, high in the hills.
He is my savior, the one
who rescues me from the cruel enemy.
4I called to the Lord for help,
and he saved me from my enemies.
He is worthy of my praise!
5Waves of death were crashing around me.
A deadly flood was carrying me away.
6The ropes of the grave wrapped around me.
Death set its trap right there in front of me.
7In my trouble I called to the Lord.
Yes, I cried out to my God for help.
There in his temple he heard my voice.
He heard my cry for help.
8The earth shook and shivered.
The foundations of heaven trembled.
They shook because he was angry!
9Smoke came from his nose.
Burning flames came from his mouth.
Red-hot coals fell from him.
10He tore open the sky and came down.
He stood on a thick, dark cloud.
11He flew across the sky, riding on a Cherub angel,
gliding on the wings of the wind.
12He wrapped himself in darkness that covered him like a tent.
He was hidden by dark clouds filled with water.
13Out of the brightness before him,
flashes of lightning came down.
14The Lord thundered from the sky.
God Most High let his voice be heard.
15He scattered the enemy with his arrows—
the lightning bolts that threw them into confusion.
16The Lord shouted his command,
and a powerful wind began to blow.#22:16 and … blow Or “and a blast of breath came from his nose.”
Then the bottom of the sea could be seen,
and the earth’s foundations were uncovered.
17The Lord reached down from above and grabbed me.
He pulled me from the deep water.
18He saved me from my powerful enemies, who hated me.
They were too strong for me, so he saved me.
19They attacked me in my time of trouble,
but the Lord was there to support me.
20He was pleased with me, so he rescued me.
He took me to a safe place.
21The Lord rewarded me for doing what is right.
He was good to me because I am innocent.
22The Lord did this because I have obeyed him.
I have not turned against my God.
23I always remembered his laws.
I never stopped following his rules.
24He knows I did nothing that was wrong.
I have kept myself from sinning.
25So the Lord rewarded me for doing what is right.
He could see that I am innocent.
26Lord, you are faithful to those who are faithful.
You are good to those who are good.
27You never do wrong to those who have done no wrong.
But you outsmart the wicked, no matter how clever they are.
28You help those who are humble,
but as soon as you see the proud, you humiliate them.
29Lord, you are my lamp.
You, Lord, turn the darkness around me into light.
30With your help I can defeat an army.
If my God is with me, I can climb over enemy walls.
31God’s way is perfect.
The Lord’s promise always proves to be true.
He protects those who trust in him.
32There is no God except the Lord.
There is no Rock except our God.
33God is my strong fortress.
He clears the path I need to take.
34He makes my feet as steady as those of a deer.
Even on steep mountains he keeps me from falling.
35He trains me for war
so that my arms can bend the most powerful bow.
36Lord, you have given me your shield to protect me.
It is your help that has made me great.
37You cleared a path for my feet
so that I could walk without stumbling.
38I chased my enemies and defeated them.
I did not stop until they were destroyed.
39I destroyed my enemies.
I struck them down.
They did not get up again.
They fell under my feet.
40Lord, you made me strong in battle.
You made my enemies fall before me.
41You made my enemies turn and run away.
I destroyed those who hated me.
42They looked for help,
but there was no one to save them.
They cried out to the Lord,
but he did not answer them.
43I beat my enemies to pieces
like dust on the ground.
I smashed them and walked on them
like mud in the streets.
44You saved me from those who fought against me.
You made me the ruler over nations.
People I never knew now serve me.
45Foreigners fall helpless before me!
As soon as they heard about me, they were ready to obey.
46They lose all their courage
and come out of their hiding places shaking with fear.
47The Lord lives!
I praise my Rock!
How great is my God, the Rock who saves me!
48He is the God who punishes my enemies for me,
the one who puts people under my rule.
49He saves me from my enemies!
You help me defeat those who attack me.
You save me from cruel people.
50Lord, that is why I praise you among the nations.
That is why I sing songs of praise to your name.
51You help your king win battle after battle.
You show your faithful love to your chosen one,#22:51 your chosen one Literally, “his anointed one.”
to David and his descendants forever!
