1 Kings 31
31
1And the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gelboe.
2And the Philistines fell upon Saul, and upon his sons: and they slew Jonathan, and Abinadab and Melchisua the sons of Saul.
3And the whole weight of the battle was turned upon Saul: and the archers overtook him. And he was grievously wounded by the archers.
4Then Saul said to his armourbearer: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest these uncircumcised come, and slay me, and mock at me. And his armourbearer would not: for he was struck with exceeding great fear. Then Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.
5And when his armourbearer saw this, to wit, that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him.
6So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men that same day together.
7And the men of Israel, that were beyond the valley, and beyond the Jordan, seeing that the Israelites were fled, and that Saul was dead, and his sons, forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came, and dwelt there.
8And on the morrow the Philistines came to strip the slain: and they found Saul and his three sons lying in mount Gelboe.
9And they cut off Saul's head, and stripped him of his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the temples of their idols, and among their people.
10And they put his armour in the temple of Astaroth: but his body they hung on the wall of Bethsan.
11Now when the inhabitants of Jabes Galaad had heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12All the most valiant men arose, and walked all the night, and took the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Bethsan. And they came to Jabes Galaad, and burnt them there.
13And they took their bones and buried them in the wood of Jabes: and fasted seven days.

The Tragic End of Saul and His Sons
1Now #1 Sam. 23:22the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount #1 Chr. 10:1–12Gilboa. 2Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed #1 Sam. 28:4Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons. 3#1 Sam. 14:49; 1 Chr. 8:33The battle became fierce against Saul. The archers hit him, and he was severely wounded by the archers.
4#2 Sam. 1:6Then Saul said to his armorbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest #Judg. 9:54; 1 Chr. 10:4these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through and abuse me.”
But his armorbearer would not, #Judg. 14:3; 1 Sam. 14:6; 17:26, 36for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and #2 Sam. 1:14fell on it. 5And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword, and died with him. 6So Saul, his three sons, his armorbearer, and all his men died together that same day.
7And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were on the other side of the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them. 8So it happened the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9And they cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and sent word throughout the land of the Philistines, to #2 Sam. 1:6, 10proclaim it in the temple of their idols and among the people. 10#Judg. 16:23, 24; 2 Sam. 1:20Then they put his armor in the temple of the #1 Sam. 21:9Ashtoreths, and #Judg. 2:13; 1 Sam. 7:3they fastened his body to the wall of #2 Sam. 21:12Beth Shan.
11#Judg. 1:27Now when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12#1 Sam. 11:1–13all the valiant men arose and traveled all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh and #1 Sam. 11:1–11; 2 Sam. 2:4–7burned them there. 13Then they took their bones and #2 Chr. 16:14; Jer. 34:5; Amos 6:10buried them under the tamarisk tree at #2 Sam. 2:4, 5; 21:12–14Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
