Psalm 54

A Prayer for Protection from Enemies
To the chief Musician on Neg´inoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when the Ziphim came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?#1 Sam 23.19; 26.1.
1Save me, O God, by thy name,
and judge me by thy strength.
2Hear my prayer, O God;
give ear to the words of my mouth.
3For strangers are risen up against me,
and oppressors seek after my soul:
they have not set God before them. Selah.
4Behold, God is mine helper:
the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
5He shall reward evil unto mine enemies:
cut them off in thy truth.
6I will freely sacrifice unto thee:
I will praise thy name, O Lord;
for it is good.
7For he hath delivered me out of all trouble:
and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

Answered Prayer for Deliverance from Adversaries
For the music director, with stringed instruments.
A maskil of David,
when the Ziphites went and said to Saul,
“Is not David hiding himself among us?”#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm; the English verse number is reduced by one
1O God, by your name save me,
and by your power vindicate me.
2O God, hear my prayer;
heed the words of my mouth.
3For foreigners have risen against me,
and ruthless men seek my life.
They have not set God before them. Selah
4See, God is my helper;
The Lord is with those who sustain my life.#Or “The Lord is the sustainer of my life.”
5He will repay#According to the reading tradition (Qere) my enemies for their#Hebrew “the” evil;
in your faithfulness destroy them.
6I will freely sacrifice to you;
I will give thanks to your name,
O Yahweh, because it is good.
7Because he has delivered me from all trouble,
and my eye has looked with satisfaction on my enemies.
