The Promise of the Lord's Coming
1This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: 2that ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles#3.2 of us the apostles. Some early manuscripts have of your apostles. of the Lord and Saviour: 3#Jude 18. knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5#Gen 1.6-8. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6#Gen 7.11. whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7but the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Ps 90.4. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10#Matt 24.43; Luke 12.39; 1 Thes 5.2; Rev 16.15. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.#3.10 shall be burned up. Some early manuscripts have shall be found.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13#Isa 65.17; 66.22; Rev 21.1. Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 15And account that the long-suffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other Scriptures, unto their own destruction. 17Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. 18But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

God’s Promise Is Not Slack
1Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which #2 Pet. 1:13I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2that you may be mindful of the words #2 Pet. 1:21which were spoken before by the holy prophets, #Jude 17and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, 3knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, #2 Pet. 2:10walking according to their own lusts, 4and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of #Gen. 6:1–7creation.” 5For this they willfully forget: that #Gen. 1:6, 9; Heb. 11:3by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth #Ps. 24:2; 136:6standing out of water and in the water, 6#Gen. 7:11, 12, 21–23; Matt. 24:37–39; Luke 17:26, 27; 2 Pet. 2:5by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7But #2 Pet. 3:10, 12the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for #Matt. 25:41; (2 Thess. 1:8)fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and #Ps. 90:4a thousand years as one day. 9#Hab. 2:3; Rom. 13:11; Heb. 10:37The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but #Ps. 86:15; Is. 30:18is longsuffering toward us, #Ezek. 33:11not willing that any should perish but #Matt. 20:28; (Rom. 2:4)that all should come to repentance.
The Day of the Lord
10But #Matt. 24:42, 43; Luke 12:39; 1 Thess. 5:2; Rev. 3:3; 16:15the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which #Gen. 1:6–8; Ps. 102:25, 26; Is. 51:6; Rev. 20:11the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be #1 Pet. 1:15in holy conduct and godliness, 12#1 Cor. 1:7, 8; Titus 2:13–15looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will #Ps. 50:3be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will #Is. 24:19; 34:4; Mic. 1:4melt with fervent heat? 13Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for #Is. 65:17; 66:22new heavens and a #(Rom. 8:21); Rev. 21:1new earth in which righteousness dwells.
Be Steadfast
14Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent #1 Cor. 1:8; 15:58; (1 Thess. 3:12, 13; 5:23)to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15and consider that #Ps. 86:15; Rom. 2:4; 1 Pet. 3:20the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16as also in all his #Rom. 8:19; 1 Cor. 15:24; 1 Thess. 4:15; 2 Thess. 1:10epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the #2 Tim. 3:16rest of the Scriptures.
17You therefore, beloved, #Mark 13:23since you know this beforehand, #Eph. 4:14beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18#Eph. 4:15but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
#Rom. 11:36; 2 Tim. 4:18; Rev. 1:6To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
