1 #
Num 26.1-51. And the Lord spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Si´nai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls; 3from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies. 4And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of the house of his fathers. 5And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben; Eli´zur the son of Shede´ur. 6Of Simeon; Shelu´mi-el the son of Zurishad´dai. 7Of Judah; Nahshon the son of Ammin´adab. 8Of Is´sachar; Nethan´e-el the son of Zu´ar. 9Of Zeb´ulun; Eli´ab the son of Helon. 10Of the children of Joseph: of E´phra-im; Elish´ama the son of Ammi´hud: of Manas´seh; Gama´li-el the son of Pedah´zur. 11Of Benjamin; Ab´idan the son of Gide-o´ni. 12Of Dan; Ahi-e´zer the son of Ammishad´dai. 13Of Asher; Pag´i-el the son of Ocran. 14Of Gad; Eli´asaph the son of Deu´el. 15Of Naph´tali; Ahi´ra the son of Enan. 16These were the renowned of the congregation, princes of the tribes of their fathers, heads of thousands in Israel.
17And Moses and Aaron took these men which are expressed by their names: 18and they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. 19As the Lord commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Si´nai.
20And the children of Reuben, Israel's eldest son, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 21those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.
22Of the children of Simeon, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, those that were numbered of them, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 23those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.
24Of the children of Gad, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 25those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.
26Of the children of Judah, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 27those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.
28Of the children of Is´sachar, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 29those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Is´sachar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.
30Of the children of Zeb´ulun, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 31those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Zeb´ulun, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.
32Of the children of Joseph, namely, of the children of E´phra-im, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 33those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of E´phra-im, were forty thousand and five hundred.
34Of the children of Manas´seh, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 35those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Manas´seh, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred.
36Of the children of Benjamin, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 37those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.
38Of the children of Dan, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 39those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Dan, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred.
40Of the children of Asher, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 41those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.
42Of the children of Naph´tali, throughout their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 43those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Naph´tali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.
44These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers. 45So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel; 46even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.
The Appointment of the Levites
47But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. 48For the Lord had spoken unto Moses, saying, 49Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel: 50but thou shalt appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle. 51And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. 52And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts. 53But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony. 54And the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so did they.

Census of Fighting Men
1In the wilderness of Sinai, on the first day of the second month in the second year from the Exodus from the land of Egypt, Adonai spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting saying,
2“Do a head count of all the community of Bnei-Yisrael by their families and their ancestral house, with a total of every male one by one.
3You and Aaron are to muster by their divisions every son from 20 years and upward available to serve in the army of Israel.
4One man from each tribe, each head of his father’s household, is to assist you.
5“These then are the names of the men who will assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.
6From Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.
7From Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab.
8From Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar.
9From Zebulon, Eliab son of Helon.
10From the sons of Joseph—from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud, from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.
11From Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni.
12From Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
13From Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran.
14From Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel.
15From Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.”
16These were those selected from the community, princes of their ancestral tribes. They were heads of the thousands of Israel.
17So Moses and Aaron took these men designated by name.
18They assembled all the community on the first day of the second month. They declared their lineage according to their families, the households of their forefathers, with the number of the names of those 20 years old and upward being listed individually.
19Moses numbered Israel in the wilderness of Sinai just as Adonai had commanded him.
20The sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn (their generations, their families, by their ancestral households, according to the count of their names, every male from 20 years and upward, all available for the army),
21those counted from the tribe of Reuben were 46,500.
22From the sons of Simeon (their generations, according to their families, their ancestral households, whose names were counted by polls, every male 20 years and upward, every one who would go with the army),
23they counted from the tribe of Simeon 59,300.
24From the sons of Gad (their generations according to their families, to their ancestral households, in the count of names of every male 20 years old and upward, every one available to go out with the army),
25those counted from the tribe of Gad were 45,650.
26From the sons of Judah (their generations, by their families, their ancestral households, the count of their names, all who would go out with the army),
27those counted from the tribe of Judah were 74,600.
28From the sons of Issachar (their generations, according to their families, their ancestral households, by number of the names of every male 20 years old and upward, going out with the army),
29those counted from the tribe of Issachar were 54,400.
30From the sons of Zebulon (their generations, according to their families, to their ancestral households, by number of the names of everyone 20 years old and upward going out with the army),
31those counted from the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400.
32From the sons of Joseph—the sons of Ephraim (their generations according to their families, to their ancestral households, by count of the names of all those 20 years old and upward going out with the army),
33those numbered from the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500.
34From the sons of Manasseh (their generations according to their families, their ancestral households, by number of the names of those 20 years old and upward going out with the army),
35those counted from the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200.
36From the sons of Benjamin (their generations by their families, their ancestral households, by number of the names of every one 20 years old and upward going out with the army),
37those numbered from the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400.
38From the sons of Dan, their generations by their families their ancestral households, by number of everyone 20 years old and upward who would go out with the army,
39those numbered from the tribe of Dan were 62,700.
40From the sons of Asher (their generations by their families, their ancestral households, by number everyone 20 years old and upward who could go out with the army),
41those counted from the tribe of Asher were 41,500.
42From the sons of Naphtali (their generations by their families, their ancestral households, by number everyone 20 years old and upward who would go out with the army),
43those counted from the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.
44These were the ones numbered—Moses, Aaron and the princes of Israel counted them. Each of the twelve men represented his ancestral house.
45So all those counted from Bnei-Yisrael, according to their ancestral houses, from 20 years old and up—all able to go out with the army in Israel—
46all those who were counted totaled 603,550.
Duties of the Levities
47The Levites, however, were not counted by the tribe of their ancestors,
48for Adonai told Moses saying,
49“Definitely you are not to number the tribe of Levi, nor take the sum of them among Bnei-Yisrael.
50Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, over all its implements and all pertaining to it. They are to carry the Tabernacle and all its utensils, tend to it and camp around it.
51Whenever the Tabernacle sets out, the Levites are to dismantle it, and whenever the Tabernacle is pitched, the Levites are to set it up. But the commoner who comes near to it must be put to death.
52Bnei-Yisrael will encamp, each man with his own camp, each with his own standard, according to their own divisions.
53The Levites are to camp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony, so that there will be no wrath unleashed on the community of Bnei-Yisrael. So the Levites are to maintain care of the Tabernacle of the Testimony.
54So Bnei-Yisrael did—all that Adonai commanded Moses, so they did.
