Genesis 16

Hagar and Ishmael
1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bare him no children: and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. 2And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. 3And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. 4And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. 5And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee. 6But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
7And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. 8And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai. 9And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. 10And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. 11And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ish´ma-el;#16.11 That is, God shall hear. because the Lord hath heard thy affliction. 12And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him: and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. 13And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? 14Wherefore the well was called Beer–la´hai–roi:#16.14 That is, The well of him that liveth and seeth me. behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ish´ma-el. 16And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ish´ma-el to Abram.

Genesis 16

The Birth of Ishmael
1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children, and she had a maidservant, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. # Gal 4:24 2And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from having children. Please go in to my maid; it may be that I will obtain children through her.”
Abram listened to Sarai. 3So after Abram had been living for ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, his wife, # Ge 12:4–5 took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. 4He went in to Hagar, and she conceived.
When she saw that she had conceived, she began to despise her mistress. 5Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my maid into your arms; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. May the Lord judge between you and me.” # Ge 31:53; Ex 5:21
6But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her presence.
7The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness. It was the spring on the way to Shur. # Ex 15:22 8And he said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from and where are you going?”
And she said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”
9Then the angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority.” 10The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will multiply your descendants exceedingly so that they will be too many to count.” # Ge 17:20; 21:13
11Then the angel of the Lord said to her,
“Behold, you are pregnant
and will bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael,
because the Lord has heard your affliction. # Ex 2:23–24; 3:7
12He will be a wild man;
his hand will be against every man,
and every man’s hand will be against him.
And he will dwell
in the presence of all his brothers.” # Ge 21:20; 25:18
13Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are the God who sees,” for she said, “Have I now looked on Him who sees me?” # Ge 32:30; Ps 139:1–12 14Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. # Ge 24:62; 25:11 It is between Kadesh and Bered.
15So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the son she bore Ishmael. # Ge 25:12 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
