Acts 13
13
Barnabas and Saul Begin Their First Missionary Journey
1Now there were in the church that was at An´ti-och certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyre´ne, and Man´a-en, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. 3And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
The Apostles Preach in Cyprus
4So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleu´cia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. 5And when they were at Sal´amis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister. 6And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar–jesus: 7which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God. 8But El´ymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. 9Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, 10and said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? 11And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. 12Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.
Paul and Barnabas at Antioch of Pisidia
13Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphyl´i-a: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem. 14But when they departed from Perga, they came to An´ti-och in Pisid´i-a, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. 15And after the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. 16Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said,
Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience. 17#Exod 1.7; Exod 12.51. The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm brought he them out of it. 18#Num 14.34; Deut 1.31. And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. 22#1 Sam 13.14; 1 Sam 16.12; Ps 89.20. And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. 23Of this man's seed hath God, according to his promise, raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: 24#Mark 1.4; Luke 3.3. when John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25#John 1.20; Matt 3.11; Mark 1.7; Luke 3.16; John 1.27. 26Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. 27For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. 28#Matt 27.22,23; Mark 15.13,14; Luke 23.21-23; John 19.15. And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. 30But God raised him from the dead: 31#Acts 1.3. and he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. 32And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, 33#Ps 2.7. God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm,
Thou art my Son,

I will give you the sure mercies of David.

Ps 16.10. Wherefore he saith also in another psalm,
Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
36For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: 37but he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. 38Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39and by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;

Hab 1.5. Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish:
for I work a work in your days,
a work which ye shall in no wise believe,
though a man declare it unto you.
42And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. 43Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
44And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. 45But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. 46Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. 47#Isa 42.6; 49.6. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying,
I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles,
that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
48And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. 49And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. 50But the Jews stirred up the devout and honorable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. 51#Matt 10.14; Mark 6.11; Luke 9.5; 10.11. But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Ico´ni-um. 52And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Ma`asei (Acts) 13
13
1And in the assembly that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: both Barnaḇa and Shim‛on who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaḥĕm who had been brought up with Herodes the district ruler, and Sha’ul.
2And as they were doing service to the Master and fasted, the Set-apart Spirit said, “Separate unto Me Barnaḇa and Sha’ul for the work to which I have called them.”
3Then having fasted and prayed, and having laid hands on them, they sent them away.
4So they, having been sent out by the Set-apart Spirit, went down to Seleukeia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.
5And having come into Salamis, they proclaimed the word of Elohim in the congregations of the Yehuḏim. And they also had Yoḥanan as an attendant.
6And having passed through all the island to Paphos, they found a certain magician, a false prophet, a Yehuḏi whose name was Bar-Yehoshua,
7who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of understanding. This man, having called for Barnaḇa and Sha’ul, earnestly sought to hear the word of Elohim.
8But Elumas the magician – for so his name is translated – withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the belief.
9Then Sha’ul, who also is Paul#See Explanatory Notes "Paul" – filled with the Set-apart Spirit, looked intently at him,
10and said, “O son of the devil, filled with all deceit and all recklessness, you enemy of all righteousness, shall you not cease perverting the straight ways of יהוה?
11And now, see, the hand of יהוה is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time. And instantly a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand.
12And having seen what took place, the proconsul believed, being astonished at the teaching of the Master.
13And having put out from Paphos, Sha’ul and those with him came to Perge in Pamphulia. And Yoḥanan, having left them, returned to Yerushalayim.
14But passing through from Perge, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the congregation on the Sabbath day and sat down.
15And after the reading of the Torah and the Prophets, the rulers of the congregation sent to them, saying, “Men, brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, speak.”
16And Sha’ul, standing up and motioning with his hand said, “Men, Yisra’ĕlis, and those fearing Elohim, listen:
17“The Elohim of this people Yisra’ĕl did choose our fathers, and exalted the people in their sojourning in the land of Mitsrayim, and with a high arm He brought them out of it.
18“Now for a time of about forty years He sustained them in the wilderness.
19“And having destroyed seven nations in the land of Kena’an, He gave their land to them as an inheritance.
20“And after that He gave judges for about four hundred and fifty years, until Shemu’ĕl the prophet.
21“But then they asked for a sovereign, and Elohim gave them Sha’ul the son of Qish, a man of the tribe of Binyamin, for forty years.
22And having removed him, He raised up for them Dawiḏ as sovereign, to whom also He gave witness and said, ‘I have found Dawiḏ the son of Yishai, a man after My own heart, who shall do all My desires.’ ”
23“From this one’s seed, according to the promise, Elohim raised up for Yisra’ĕl a Saviour, יהושע,
24after Yoḥanan had first proclaimed the immersion of repentance to all the people of Yisra’ĕl, before His coming.
25And as Yoḥanan was completing his mission, he said, ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not He. But see, there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.’ ”
26“Men, brothers, sons of the race of Aḇraham, and those among you fearing Elohim, to you the word of this deliverance has been sent,
27for those dwelling in Yerushalayim, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have filled them in having judged Him.
28“And having found not one cause for death, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death.
29“And when they had accomplished all that was written concerning Him, taking Him down from the timber, they laid Him in a tomb.
30But Elohim raised Him from the dead,”
31and He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galil to Yerushalayim, who are His witnesses to the people.
32“And we bring you the Good News, the promise made to the fathers,
33that Elohim has filled this for us, their children, having raised up יהושע, as it has also been written in the second Tehillah, ‘You are My Son, today I have brought You forth.’# Psa. 2:7
34And that He raised Him out of the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has said thus, ‘I shall give you the trustworthy kindnesses of Dawiḏ.’# Isa. 55:3
35“For this reason He also says in another Tehillah, ‘You shall not give Your Lovingly-committed One to see corruption.’# Psa. 16:10
36For Dawiḏ, indeed, having served his own generation by the counsel of Elohim, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption,”
37but He whom Elohim raised up saw no corruption.
38“Let it therefore be known to you, brothers, that through this One forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,
39“and by Him everyone who believes is declared right from all sins from which you were not able to be declared right by the Torah of Mosheh.
40“Watch then that what was said in the prophets does not come upon you:
41“See, you despisers, marvel and perish, for I work a work in your days, a work which you would in no way believe if someone were to declare it to you.’ ”# Hab. 1:5
42And when the Yehuḏim went out of the congregation, the nations begged to have these words spoken to them the next Sabbath.
43And when the meeting of the congregation had broken up, many of the Yehuḏim and of the worshipping converts followed Sha’ul and Barnaḇa, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the favour of Elohim.
44And on the next Sabbath almost all the city came together to hear the Word of Elohim.
45But when the Yehuḏim saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. And contradicting and speaking evil, they opposed what Sha’ul was saying.
46But speaking boldly, Sha’ul and Barnaḇa said, “It was necessary that the word of Elohim should be spoken to you first, but since you thrust it away, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, see, we turn to the nations.
47For so the Master has commanded us, ‘I have set you to be a light to the nations, that you should be for deliverance to the ends of the earth.’# Isa. 49:6
48And when the nations heard this, they were glad and praised the Word of יהוה. And as many as had been appointed to everlasting life believed.
49And the Word of יהוה was being spread throughout the entire country.
50But the Yehuḏim stirred up the worshipping and noble women and the chief men of the city, and raised up persecution against Sha’ul and Barnaḇa, and threw them out of their borders.
51And shaking off the dust from their feet against them, they came to Ikonion.
52And the taught ones were filled with joy and the Set-apart Spirit.
