The Promise of the Lord's Coming
1This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: 2that ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles#3.2 of us the apostles. Some early manuscripts have of your apostles. of the Lord and Saviour: 3#Jude 18. knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5#Gen 1.6-8. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6#Gen 7.11. whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7but the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Ps 90.4. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10#Matt 24.43; Luke 12.39; 1 Thes 5.2; Rev 16.15. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.#3.10 shall be burned up. Some early manuscripts have shall be found.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13#Isa 65.17; 66.22; Rev 21.1. Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 15And account that the long-suffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other Scriptures, unto their own destruction. 17Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. 18But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

The Day of the Lord
1Dear friends, this is now the second letter # 1Pt 1:1 I have written to you; in both letters, I want to develop a genuine # Php 1:10 understanding with a reminder, 2so that you can remember the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the command of our Lord and Savior given through your apostles. 3First, be aware of this: Scoffers will come in the last days # 2Tm 3:1; Heb 1:2; Jms 5:3; 1Pt 1:20 to scoff, living according to their own desires, 4saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? # 1Th 2:19; 2Pt 3:12 Ever since the fathers fell asleep, # Ac 7:60 all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation.” 5They willfully ignore this: Long ago the heavens and the earth were brought about from water and through water # Ps 24:1-2; 33:6-7; 136:5-6; Pr 8:24-29 by the word of God. # Gn 1:3-30; Ps 148:5; Jn 1:1-3; Heb 4:12; 11:3 6Through these waters the world of that time perished when it was flooded. # 2Pt 2:5 7But by the same word, # Is 66:15-16; Ezk 38:22; Am 7:4; Zph 1:18; Mal 4:1 the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment # Php 1:6; 2Th 1:5; 1Jn 4:17 and destruction of ungodly men.
8Dear friends, don’t let this one thing escape you: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. # Ps 90:4 9The Lord does not delay His promise, # Hab 2:3 as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any # Ti 2:11 to perish # Ezk 18:23,32; 33:11; 1Tm 2:4 but all to come to repentance. # Jl 2:12-13; Jnh 3:10; 4:2; Ac 17:31; Rm 2:4
10But the Day of the Lord # Php 1:6 will come like a thief; # Other mss add in the night # Mt 24:43; Lk 12:39; 1Th 5:2 on that day the heavens will pass away # Mt 5:18; 24:35; Rv 21:1 with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, # Is 24:19; Mc 1:4 and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed. # Other mss read will be burned up 11Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness 12as you wait for and earnestly desire the coming # Or and speed the coming of the day of God. # Lk 12:36; 1Co 1:7; 1Th 1:10; Ti 2:13; Jd 21 The heavens will be on fire and be dissolved because of it, and the elements will melt with the heat. 13But based on His promise, we wait for the new heavens and a new earth, # Is 65:17; 66:22; Mt 19:28; Rm 8:21; Rv 21:1 where righteousness will dwell. # Is 32:16; Rm 14:17
Conclusion
14Therefore, dear friends, while you wait for these things, make every effort to be found at peace with Him without spot or blemish. # Php 2:15; 1Th 5:23; 1Tm 6:14; Jms 1:27 15Also, regard the patience of our Lord as an opportunity for salvation, just as our dear brother Paul has written to you according to the wisdom given to him. # Ac 9:17; 15:25; 2Pt 3:2 16He speaks about these things in all his letters in which there are some matters that are hard to understand. The untaught and unstable twist them to their own destruction, # Heb 5:11; 2Pt 2:14 as they also do with the rest of the Scriptures.
17Therefore, dear friends, since you know this in advance, be on your guard, # Lk 12:15; 2Tm 1:14; 4:15 so that you are not led away by the error of lawless people and fall from your own stability. 18But grow in the grace and knowledge # 2Pt 1:2 of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. # Or now and forever # Rm 11:36; 2Tm 4:18; Rv 1:6 Amen. # Other mss omit Amen.
