2 Chronicles 11
11
1And when Rehobo´am was come to Jerusalem, he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin a hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehobo´am. 2But the word of the Lord came to Shemai´ah the man of God, saying, 3Speak unto Rehobo´am the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying, 4Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house; for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the Lord, and returned from going against Jerobo´am.
The Prosperity of Rehoboam
5And Rehobo´am dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defense in Judah. 6He built even Bethlehem, and Etam, and Teko´a, 7and Beth–zur, and Shoco, and Adul´lam, 8and Gath, and Mare´shah, and Ziph, 9and Adora´im, and Lachish, and Aze´kah, 10and Zorah, and Aj´alon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fenced cities. 11And he fortified the strongholds, and put captains in them, and store of victuals, and of oil and wine. 12And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side.
13And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their coasts. 14For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jerobo´am and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest's office unto the Lord: 15#1 Kgs 12.31. and he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made. 16And after them, out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek the Lord God of Israel came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto the Lord God of their fathers. 17So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehobo´am the son of Solomon strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.
18And Rehobo´am took him Ma´halath the daughter of Jer´imoth the son of David to wife, and Ab´ihail the daughter of Eli´ab the son of Jesse; 19which bare him children; Je´ush, and Shemari´ah, and Zaham. 20And after her he took Ma´achah the daughter of Ab´salom; which bare him Abi´jah, and At´tai, and Ziza, and Shelo´mith. 21And Rehobo´am loved Ma´achah the daughter of Ab´salom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and threescore concubines; and begat twenty and eight sons, and threescore daughters.) 22And Rehobo´am made Abi´jah the son of Ma´achah the chief, to be ruler among his brethren: for he thought to make him king. 23And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fenced city: and he gave them victuals in abundance. And he desired many wives.

2 Chronicles 11
11
1When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he gathered one hundred eighty thousand of the best soldiers from Judah and Benjamin. He wanted to fight Israel to take back his kingdom. 2But the Lord spoke his word to Shemaiah, a man of God, saying, 3“Speak to Solomon’s son Rehoboam, the king of Judah, and to all the Israelites living in Judah and Benjamin. Say to them, 4‘The Lord says you must not go to war against your brothers. Every one of you should go home, because I made all these things happen.’ ” So they obeyed the Lord’s command and turned back and did not attack Jeroboam.
Rehoboam Makes Judah Strong
5Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and built strong cities in Judah to defend it. 6He built up the cities of Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, 7Beth Zur, Soco, Adullam, 8Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, 9Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, 10Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron. These were strong, walled cities in Judah and Benjamin. 11When Rehoboam made those cities strong, he put commanders and supplies of food, oil, and wine in them. 12Also, Rehoboam put shields and spears in all the cities and made them very strong. Rehoboam kept the people of Judah and Benjamin under his control.
13The priests and the Levites from all over Israel joined Rehoboam. 14The Levites even left their pasturelands and property and came to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons refused to let them serve as priests to the Lord. 15Jeroboam chose his own priests for the places of worship and for the goat and calf idols he had made. 16There were people from all the tribes of Israel who wanted to obey the Lord, the God of Israel. So they went to Jerusalem with the Levites to sacrifice to the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 17These people made the kingdom of Judah strong, and they supported Solomon’s son Rehoboam for three years. During this time they lived the way David and Solomon had lived.
Rehoboam’s Family
18Rehoboam married Mahalath, the daughter of Jerimoth and Abihail. Jerimoth was David’s son, and Abihail was the daughter of Eliab, Jesse’s son. 19Mahalath gave Rehoboam these sons: Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham. 20Then Rehoboam married Absalom’s daughter Maacah, and she gave Rehoboam these children: Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith. 21Rehoboam loved Maacah more than his other wives and slave women. Rehoboam had eighteen wives and sixty slave women and was the father of twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.
22Rehoboam chose Abijah son of Maacah to be the leader of his own brothers, because he planned to make Abijah king. 23Rehoboam acted wisely. He spread his sons through all the areas of Judah and Benjamin, sending them to every strong, walled city. He gave plenty of supplies to his sons, and he also found wives for them.
