The Sons of Israel
(Genesis 35.22-26)
1These are the sons of Israel; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Is´sachar, and Zeb´ulun, 2Dan, Joseph, and Benjamin, Naph´tali, Gad, and Asher.
The Descendants of Judah
3The sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah: which three were born unto him of the daughter of Shu´a the Canaanitess. And Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil in the sight of the Lord; and he slew him. 4And Tamar his daughter-in-law bare him Pharez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five.
5The sons of Pharez; Hezron, and Hamul. 6And the sons of Zerah; Zimri, and Ethan, and Heman, and Calcol, and Dara: five of them in all. 7#Josh 7.1. And the sons of Carmi; Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the thing accursed. 8And the sons of Ethan; Azari´ah.
9The sons also of Hezron, that were born unto him; Jerah´meel, and Ram, and Chelu´bai. 10And Ram begat Ammin´adab; and Ammin´adab begat Nahshon, prince of the children of Judah; 11and Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz, 12and Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse. 13And Jesse begat his firstborn Eli´ab, and Abin´adab the second, and Shimma the third, 14Nethan´e-el the fourth, Rad´dai the fifth, 15Ozem the sixth, David the seventh: 16whose sisters were Zeru-i´ah, and Ab´igail. And the sons of Zeru-i´ah; Ab´ishai, and Jo´ab, and As´ahel, three. 17And Ab´igail bare Ama´sa: and the father of Ama´sa was Jether the Ish´maelite.
18And Caleb the son of Hezron begat children of Azu´bah his wife, and of Jer´i-oth: her sons are these; Jesher, and Shobab, and Ardon. 19And when Azu´bah was dead, Caleb took unto him Ephrath, which bare him Hur. 20And Hur begat Uri, and Uri begat Bez´aleel.
21And afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir the father of Gil´e-ad, whom he married when he was threescore years old; and she bare him Segub. 22And Segub begat Ja´ir, who had three and twenty cities in the land of Gil´e-ad. 23And he took Geshur, and Aram, with the towns of Ja´ir, from them, with Kenath, and the towns thereof, even threescore cities. All these belonged to the sons of Machir the father of Gil´e-ad. 24And after that Hezron was dead in Caleb–eph´ratah, then Abi´ah Hezron's wife bare him Ashur the father of Teko´a.
25And the sons of Jerah´meel the firstborn of Hezron were, Ram the firstborn, and Bunah, and Oren, and Ozem, and Ahi´jah. 26Jerah´meel had also another wife, whose name was At´arah; she was the mother of Onam. 27And the sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerah´meel were, Ma´az, and Jamin, and Eker. 28And the sons of Onam were, Sham´mai, and Jada. And the sons of Sham´mai; Nadab, and Abi´shur. 29And the name of the wife of Abi´shur was Ab´ihail, and she bare him Ahban, and Molid. 30And the sons of Nadab; Seled, and Ap´pa-im: but Seled died without children. 31And the sons of Ap´pa-im; Ishi. And the sons of Ishi; Sheshan. And the children of Sheshan; Ah´lai. 32And the sons of Jada the brother of Sham´mai; Jether, and Jonathan: and Jether died without children. 33And the sons of Jonathan; Peleth, and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerah´meel. 34Now Sheshan had no sons, but daughters. And Sheshan had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Jarha. 35And Sheshan gave his daughter to Jarha his servant to wife; and she bare him At´tai. 36And At´tai begat Nathan, and Nathan begat Zabad, 37and Zabad begat Ephlal, and Ephlal begat Obed, 38and Obed begat Jehu, and Jehu begat Azari´ah, 39and Azari´ah begat Helez, and Helez begat Ele-a´sah, 40and Ele-a´sah begat Sis´amai, and Sis´amai begat Shallum, 41and Shallum begat Jekami´ah, and Jekami´ah begat Elish´ama.
42Now the sons of Caleb the brother of Jerah´meel were, Mesha his firstborn, which was the father of Ziph; and the sons of Mare´shah the father of Hebron. 43And the sons of Hebron; Korah, and Tap´pu-ah, and Rekem, and Shema. 44And Shema begat Raham, the father of Jor´ko-am: and Rekem begat Sham´mai. 45And the son of Sham´mai was Ma´on: and Ma´on was the father of Beth–zur. 46And Ephah, Caleb's concubine, bare Haran, and Moza, and Gazez: and Haran begat Gazez. 47And the sons of Jah´dai; Regem, and Jotham, and Gesham, and Pelet, and Ephah, and Sha´aph. 48Ma´achah, Caleb's concubine, bare Sheber, and Tir´hanah. 49She bare also Sha´aph the father of Madman´nah, Sheva the father of Machbe´nah, and the father of Gib´e-a: and the daughter of Caleb was Achsa.
50These were the sons of Caleb the son of Hur, the firstborn of Eph´ratah; Shobal the father of Kir´jath–je´arim, 51Salma the father of Bethlehem, Hareph the father of Beth–ga´der. 52And Shobal the father of Kir´jath–je´arim had sons; Ha-ro´eh, and half of the Manahe´thites. 53And the families of Kir´jath–je´arim; the Ithrites, and the Puhites, and the Shu´mathites, and the Mish´ra-ites; of them came the Zare´athites, and the Eshta´ulites. 54The sons of Salma; Bethlehem, and the Netoph´athites, At´aroth, the house of Jo´ab, and half of the Manahe´thites, the Zorites. 55And the families of the scribes which dwelt at Jabez; the Ti´rathites, the Shim´e-athites, and Su´chathites. These are the Kenites that came of Hemath, the father of the house of Rechab.

Descendants of Israel
1The sons of Israel#2:1 Israel is the name that God gave to Jacob. were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, 2Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
Descendants of Judah
3Judah had three sons from Bathshua, a Canaanite woman. Their names were Er, Onan, and Shelah. But the Lord saw that the oldest son, Er, was a wicked man, so he killed him. 4Later Judah had twin sons from Tamar, his widowed daughter-in-law. Their names were Perez and Zerah. So Judah had five sons in all.
5The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
6The sons of Zerah were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda#2:6 As in many Hebrew manuscripts, some Greek manuscripts, and Syriac version (see also 1 Kgs 4:31); Hebrew reads Dara.—five in all.
7The son of Carmi (a descendant of Zimri) was Achan,#2:7a Hebrew Achar; compare Josh 7:1. Achar means “disaster.” who brought disaster on Israel by taking plunder that had been set apart for the Lord.#2:7b The Hebrew term used here refers to the complete consecration of things or people to the Lord, either by destroying them or by giving them as an offering.
8The son of Ethan was Azariah.
From Judah’s Grandson Hezron to David
9The sons of Hezron were Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb.#2:9 Hebrew Kelubai, a variant spelling of Caleb; compare 2:18.
10Ram was the father of Amminadab.
Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, a leader of Judah.
11Nahshon was the father of Salmon.#2:11 As in Greek version (see also Ruth 4:20); Hebrew reads Salma.
Salmon was the father of Boaz.
12Boaz was the father of Obed.
Obed was the father of Jesse.
13Jesse’s first son was Eliab, his second was Abinadab, his third was Shimea, 14his fourth was Nethanel, his fifth was Raddai, 15his sixth was Ozem, and his seventh was David.
16Their sisters were named Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah had three sons named Abishai, Joab, and Asahel. 17Abigail married a man named Jether, an Ishmaelite, and they had a son named Amasa.
Other Descendants of Hezron
18Hezron’s son Caleb had sons from his wife Azubah and from Jerioth.#2:18 Or Caleb had a daughter named Jerioth from his wife, Azubah. The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain. Her sons were named Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19After Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrathah,#2:19 Hebrew Ephrath, a variant spelling of Ephrathah; compare 2:50 and 4:4. and they had a son named Hur. 20Hur was the father of Uri. Uri was the father of Bezalel.
21When Hezron was sixty years old, he married Gilead’s sister, the daughter of Makir. They had a son named Segub. 22Segub was the father of Jair, who ruled twenty-three towns in the land of Gilead. 23(But Geshur and Aram captured the Towns of Jair#2:23 Or captured Havvoth-jair. and also took Kenath and its sixty surrounding villages.) All these were descendants of Makir, the father of Gilead.
24Soon after Hezron died in the town of Caleb-ephrathah, his wife Abijah gave birth to a son named Ashhur (the father of#2:24 Or the founder of; also in 2:42, 45, 49. Tekoa).
Descendants of Hezron’s Son Jerahmeel
25The sons of Jerahmeel, the oldest son of Hezron, were Ram (the firstborn), Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. 26Jerahmeel had a second wife named Atarah. She was the mother of Onam.
27The sons of Ram, the oldest son of Jerahmeel, were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker.
28The sons of Onam were Shammai and Jada.
The sons of Shammai were Nadab and Abishur.
29The sons of Abishur and his wife Abihail were Ahban and Molid.
30The sons of Nadab were Seled and Appaim. Seled died without children, 31but Appaim had a son named Ishi. The son of Ishi was Sheshan. Sheshan had a descendant named Ahlai.
32The sons of Jada, Shammai’s brother, were Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without children, 33but Jonathan had two sons named Peleth and Zaza.
These were all descendants of Jerahmeel.
34Sheshan had no sons, though he did have daughters. He also had an Egyptian servant named Jarha. 35Sheshan gave one of his daughters to be the wife of Jarha, and they had a son named Attai.
36Attai was the father of Nathan.
Nathan was the father of Zabad.
37Zabad was the father of Ephlal.
Ephlal was the father of Obed.
38Obed was the father of Jehu.
Jehu was the father of Azariah.
39Azariah was the father of Helez.
Helez was the father of Eleasah.
40Eleasah was the father of Sismai.
Sismai was the father of Shallum.
41Shallum was the father of Jekamiah.
Jekamiah was the father of Elishama.
Descendants of Hezron’s Son Caleb
42The descendants of Caleb, the brother of Jerahmeel, included Mesha (the firstborn), who became the father of Ziph. Caleb’s descendants also included the sons of Mareshah, the father of Hebron.#2:42 Or who founded Hebron. The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain.
43The sons of Hebron were Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. 44Shema was the father of Raham. Raham was the father of Jorkeam. Rekem was the father of Shammai. 45The son of Shammai was Maon. Maon was the father of Beth-zur.
46Caleb’s concubine Ephah gave birth to Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Haran was the father of Gazez.
47The sons of Jahdai were Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph.
48Another of Caleb’s concubines, Maacah, gave birth to Sheber and Tirhanah. 49She also gave birth to Shaaph (the father of Madmannah) and Sheva (the father of Macbenah and Gibea). Caleb also had a daughter named Acsah.
50These were all descendants of Caleb.
Descendants of Caleb’s Son Hur
The sons of Hur, the oldest son of Caleb’s wife Ephrathah, were Shobal (the founder of Kiriath-jearim), 51Salma (the founder of Bethlehem), and Hareph (the founder of Beth-gader).
52The descendants of Shobal (the founder of Kiriath-jearim) were Haroeh, half the Manahathites, 53and the families of Kiriath-jearim—the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites, and Mishraites, from whom came the people of Zorah and Eshtaol.
54The descendants of Salma were the people of Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab, the other half of the Manahathites, the Zorites, 55and the families of scribes living at Jabez—the Tirathites, Shimeathites, and Sucathites. All these were Kenites who descended from Hammath, the father of the family of Recab.#2:55 Or the founder of Beth-recab.
