Vintage Love explores the Song of Songs through the lens of spiritual formation. The early Desert Fathers saw this book as an allegory of Christ and His bride, where the story of love begins not with our pursuit, but with His. Jesus is the One who first loves, calls, and draws us, and our journey is our response to His initiating grace. This plan traces how His love awakens, matures, and transforms us in every season. Jewish people read the Song of Songs every year at the Passover, seeing these poems about the union of two lovers as a sort of commentary on Exodus — Israel escaped Egypt to enter into covenant union with Yahweh at Mount Sinai. In this plan we are going to look at some of the key themes shared between the Song of Songs and Exodus, and how Jesus, the Church’s groom, rescues us from slavery and unites us with Himself.
