Numbers 17
17
1And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, 2Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of them a staff, a staff for each father's house, of all their princes according to the houses of their fathers, twelve staves: thou shalt write each one's name upon his staff. 3And Aaron's name shalt thou write upon the staff of Levi; for one staff shall be for each head of their fathers' houses. 4And thou shalt lay them up in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you. 5And it shall come to pass, that the man whom I shall choose, his staff shall bud forth; and I will make to cease from before me the murmurings of the children of Israel, that they murmur against you. 6And Moses spoke to the children of Israel, and all their princes gave him a staff, one staff for each prince according to their fathers' houses, twelve staves, and the staff of Aaron was among their staves. 7And Moses laid the staves before Jehovah in the tent of the testimony.
8And it came to pass, when on the morrow Moses went into the tent of the testimony, behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and ripened almonds. 9And Moses brought out all the staves from before Jehovah to all the children of Israel, and they looked and took each one his staff. 10And Jehovah said to Moses, Bring Aaron's staff again before the testimony, to be kept as a token for the sons of rebellion, that thou mayest put an end to their murmurings before me, that they may not die. 11And Moses did so: as Jehovah had commanded him, so did he. 12And the children of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, Lo, we expire, we perish, we all perish. 13Every one that comes at all near to the tabernacle of Jehovah shall die: shall we then expire altogether?

God Proves Aaron Is the High Priest
1The Lord said to Moses, 2“Speak to the Israelites. Get twelve wooden walking sticks from them. Get one from the leader of each of the twelve tribes. Write the name of each man on his walking stick. 3On the stick from Levi, write Aaron’s name. There must be one stick for the head of each of the twelve tribes. 4Put these walking sticks in the Meeting Tent in front of the Box of the Agreement. This is the place where I meet with you. 5I will choose one man to be the true priest. You will know which man I choose because his walking stick will begin to grow new leaves. In this way I will stop the people from always complaining against you and me.”
6So Moses spoke to the Israelites. Each of the leaders gave him a walking stick. There were twelve walking sticks. There was one stick from each leader of each tribe. One of the walking sticks belonged to Aaron. 7Moses put the walking sticks before the Lord in the Tent of the Agreement.
8The next day Moses entered the Tent. He saw that Aaron’s walking stick, the stick from the family of Levi, was the one that had grown new leaves. That walking stick had even grown branches and made almonds. 9So Moses brought out all the sticks from the Lord’s place. He showed the walking sticks to the Israelites. They all looked at the sticks, and each man took his own stick back.
10Then the Lord said to Moses, “Put Aaron’s walking stick back in front of the Box that holds the Agreement.#17:10 Box that holds the Agreement Literally, “Testimony.” See “Agreement” in the Word List. This will be a warning for these people who are always turning against me. This will stop their complaining against me so that I will not destroy them.” 11So Moses did what the Lord commanded him.
12The Israelites said to Moses, “We know that we will die! We are lost! We will all be destroyed! 13Anyone who even comes near the Lord’s holy place will die. Is it true that we will all die?”
