Mark 14
14
1Now the passover and the feast of unleavened bread was after two days. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might seize him by subtlety and kill him. 2For they said, Not in the feast, lest perhaps there be a tumult of the people. 3And when he was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he lay at table, there came a woman having an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly; and having broken the alabaster flask, she poured it out upon his head. 4And there were some indignant in themselves, and saying, Why has this waste been made of the ointment? 5for this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor. And they spoke very angrily at her. 6But Jesus said, Let her alone; why do ye trouble her? she has wrought a good work as to me; 7for ye have the poor always with you, and whenever ye would ye can do them good; but me ye have not always. 8What she could she has done. She has beforehand anointed my body for the burial. 9And verily I say unto you, Wheresoever these glad tidings may be preached in the whole world, what this woman has done shall be also spoken of for a memorial of her. 10And Judas Iscariote, one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests that he might deliver him up to them; 11and they, when they heard it, rejoiced, and promised him to give money. And he sought how he could opportunely deliver him up.
12And the first day of unleavened bread, when they slew the passover, his disciples say to him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare, that thou mayest eat the passover? 13And he sends two of his disciples, and says to them, Go into the city, and a man shall meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. 14And wheresoever he enters, say to the master of the house, The Teacher says, Where is my guest-chamber where I may eat the passover with my disciples? 15and he will shew you a large upper room furnished ready. There make ready for us. 16And his disciples went away and came into the city, and found as he had said to them; and they made ready the passover. 17And when evening was come, he comes with the twelve. 18And as they lay at table and were eating, Jesus said, Verily I say to you, One of you shall deliver me up; he who is eating with me. 19And they began to be grieved, and to say to him, one by one, Is it I? and another, Is it I? 20But he answered and said to them, One of the twelve, he who dips with me in the dish. 21The Son of man goes indeed as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up; it were good for that man if he had not been born. 22And as they were eating, Jesus, having taken bread, when he had blessed, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, Take this: this is my body. 23And having taken the cup, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank out of it. 24And he said to them, This is my blood, that of the new covenant, that shed for many. 25Verily I say to you, I will no more drink at all of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. 26And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives. 27And Jesus says to them, All ye shall be offended, for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered abroad. 28But after I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. 29But Peter said to him, Even if all should be offended, yet not I. 30And Jesus says to him, Verily I say to thee, that thou to-day, in this night, before the cock shall crow twice, thou shalt thrice deny me. 31But he said so much exceedingly the more, If I should have to die with thee, I will in no wise deny thee. And likewise said they all too.
32And they come to a place of which the name is Gethsemane, and he says to his disciples, Sit here while I shall pray. 33And he takes with him Peter and James and John, and he began to be amazed and oppressed in spirit. 34And he says to them, My soul is full of grief even unto death; abide here and watch. 35And, going forward a little, he fell upon the earth; and he prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him. 36And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee: take away this cup from me; but not what I will, but what thou wilt. 37And he comes and finds them sleeping. And he says to Peter, Simon, dost thou sleep? Hast thou not been able to watch one hour? 38Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak. 39And going away, he prayed again, saying the same thing. 40And returning, he found them again sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they knew not what they should answer him. 41And he comes the third time and says to them, Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough; the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is delivered up into the hands of sinners. 42Arise, let us go; behold, he that delivers me up has drawn nigh.
43And immediately, while he was yet speaking, Judas comes up, being one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd, with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44Now he that delivered him up had given them a sign between them, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he; seize him, and lead him away safely. 45And being come, straightway coming up to him, he says, Rabbi, Rabbi; and he covered him with kisses. 46And they laid their hands upon him and seized him. 47But a certain one of those who stood by, having drawn his sword, struck the bondman of the high priest, and took off his ear. 48And Jesus answering said to them, Are ye come out as against a robber, with swords and sticks to take me? 49I was daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye did not seize me; but it is that the scriptures may be fulfilled. 50And all left him and fled. 51And a certain young man followed him with a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men seize him; 52but he, leaving the linen cloth behind him, fled from them naked.
53And they led away Jesus to the high priest. And there come together to him all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. 54And Peter followed him at a distance, till he was within the court of the high priest's palace; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself in the light of the fire. 55And the chief priests and the whole sanhedrim sought testimony against Jesus to cause him to be put to death, and did not find any. 56For many bore false witness against him, and their testimony did not agree. 57And certain persons rose up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58We heard him saying, I will destroy this temple which is made with hands, and in the course of three days I will build another not made with hands. 59And neither thus did their testimony agree. 60And the high priest, rising up before them all, asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? What do these testify against thee? 61But he was silent, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and says to him, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? 62And Jesus said, I am, and ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven. 63And the high priest, having rent his clothes, says, What need have we any more of witnesses? 64Ye have heard the blasphemy; what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. 65And some began to spit upon him, and cover up his face, and buffet him, and say to him, Prophesy; and the officers struck him with the palms of their hands.
66And Peter being below in the palace-court, there comes one of the maids of the high priest, 67and seeing Peter warming himself, having looked at him, says, And thou wast with the Nazarene, Jesus. 68But he denied, saying, I know not nor understand what thou sayest. And he went out into the vestibule; and a cock crew. 69And the maid, seeing him, again began to say to those that stood by, This is one of them. 70And he again denied. And again, after a little, those that stood by said to Peter, Truly thou art one of them, for also thou art a Galilean. 71But he began to curse and to swear, I know not this man of whom ye speak. 72And the second time a cock crew. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus said to him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice; and when he thought thereon he wept.

Mark 14
14
A plot to kill Jesus
(Matthew 26.1-5; Luke 22.1,2; John 11.45-53)
1It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Thin Bread. The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses were secretly planning to have Jesus arrested and put to death.#Ex 12.1-27. 2They were saying, “We must not do it during the festival, because the people will riot.”
At Bethany
(Matthew 26.6-13; John 12.1-8)
3Jesus was eating in Bethany at the home of Simon, who once had leprosy,#14.3 leprosy: In biblical times the word “leprosy” was used for many different skin diseases. when a woman came in with a very expensive bottle of sweet-smelling perfume.#14.3 sweet-smelling perfume: The Greek text has “perfume made of pure spikenard”, a plant used to make perfume. After breaking it open, she poured the perfume on Jesus' head.#Lk 7.37,38. 4This made some of the guests angry, and they complained, “Why such a waste? 5We could have sold this perfume for more than three hundred silver coins and given the money to the poor!” So they started saying cruel things to the woman.
6But Jesus said:
Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing for me. 7You will always have the poor with you. And whenever you want to, you can give to them. But you won't always have me here with you.#Dt 15.11. 8She has done all she could by pouring perfume on my body to prepare it for burial. 9You may be sure that wherever the good news is told all over the world, people will remember what she has done. And they will tell others.
Judas and the chief priests
(Matthew 26.14-16; Luke 22.3-6)
10Judas Iscariot#14.10 Iscariot: See the note at 3.19. was one of the twelve disciples. He went to the chief priests and offered to help them arrest Jesus. 11They were glad to hear this, and they promised to pay him. So Judas started looking for a good chance to betray Jesus.
Jesus eats with his disciples
(Matthew 26.17-25; Luke 22.7-14,21-23; John 13.21-30)
12It was the first day of the Festival of Thin Bread, and the Passover lambs were being killed. Jesus' disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal?”
13Jesus said to two of the disciples, “Go into the city, where you will meet a man carrying a jar of water.#14.13 a man carrying a jar of water: A male slave carrying water could mean that the family was rich. Follow him, 14and when he goes into a house, say to the owner, ‘Our teacher wants to know if you have a room where he can eat the Passover meal with his disciples.’ 15The owner will take you upstairs and show you a large room furnished and ready for you to use. Prepare the meal there.”
16The two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal.
17-18While Jesus and the twelve disciples were eating together that evening, he said, “The one who will betray me is now eating with me.”#Ps 41.9.
19This made the disciples sad, and one after another they said to Jesus, “Surely you don't mean me!”
20He answered, “It is one of you twelve men who is eating from this dish with me. 21The Son of Man will die, just as the Scriptures say. But it is going to be terrible for the one who betrays me. That man would be better off if he had never been born.”
The Lord's Supper
(Matthew 26.26-30; Luke 22.14-23; 1 Corinthians 11.23-25)
22During the meal Jesus took some bread in his hands. He blessed the bread and broke it. Then he gave it to his disciples and said, “Take this. It is my body.”
23Jesus picked up a cup of wine and gave thanks to God. He gave it to his disciples, and said, “Drink it!” So they all drank some. 24Then he said, “This is my blood, which is poured out for many people, and with it God makes his agreement.#Ex 24.8; Jr 31.31-34. 25From now on I will not drink any wine, until I drink new wine in God's kingdom.” 26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Peter's promise
(Matthew 26.31-35; Luke 22.31-34; John 13.36-38)
27Jesus said to his disciples, “All of you will reject me, as the Scriptures say,#Zec 13.7.
‘I will strike down
the shepherd,
and the sheep
will be scattered.’
28But after I am raised to life, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”#Mt 28.16.
29Peter spoke up, “Even if all the others reject you, I never will!”
30Jesus replied, “This very night before a cock crows twice, you will say three times that you don't know me.”
31But Peter was so sure of himself that he said, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never say that I don't know you!”
All the others said the same thing.
Jesus prays
(Matthew 26.36-46; Luke 22.39-46)
32Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he told them, “Sit here while I pray.”
33Jesus took along Peter, James, and John. He was sad and troubled and 34told them, “I am so sad that I feel as if I am dying. Stay here and keep awake with me.”
35-36Jesus walked on a little way. Then he knelt down on the ground and prayed, “Father,#14.35,36 Father: The Greek text has “Abba”, which is an Aramaic word meaning “father”. if it is possible, don't let this happen to me! Father, you can do anything. Don't make me suffer by making me drink from this cup.#14.35,36 by making me drink from this cup: See the note at 10.38. But do what you want, and not what I want.”
37When Jesus came back and found the disciples sleeping, he said to Simon Peter, “Are you asleep? Can't you stay awake for just one hour? 38Stay awake and pray that you won't be tested. You want to do what is right, but you are weak.”
39Jesus went back and prayed the same prayer. 40But when he returned to the disciples, he found them sleeping again. They simply could not keep their eyes open, and they did not know what to say.
41When Jesus returned to the disciples the third time, he said, “Are you still sleeping and resting?#14.41 Are you still sleeping and resting?: Or “You may as well keep on sleeping and resting.” Enough of that! The time has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to sinners. 42Get up! Let's go. The one who will betray me is already here.”
Jesus is arrested
(Matthew 26.47-56; Luke 22.47-53; John 18.3-12)
43Jesus was still speaking, when Judas the betrayer came up. He was one of the twelve disciples, and a mob of men armed with swords and clubs were with him. They had been sent by the chief priests, the nation's leaders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses. 44Judas had told them beforehand, “Arrest the man I greet with a kiss.#14.44 greet with a kiss: It was the custom for people to greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. Tie him up tight and lead him away.”
45Judas walked right up to Jesus and said, “Teacher!” Then Judas kissed him, 46and the men grabbed Jesus and arrested him.
47Someone standing there pulled out a sword. He struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48Jesus said to the mob, “Why do you come with swords and clubs to arrest me like a criminal? 49Day after day I was with you and taught in the temple, and you didn't arrest me. But what the Scriptures say must come true.”#Lk 19.47; 21.37.
50All Jesus' disciples ran off and left him. 51One of them was a young man who was wearing only a linen cloth. And when the men grabbed him, 52he left the cloth behind and ran away naked.
Jesus is questioned by the council
(Matthew 26.57-68; Luke 22.54,55,63-71; John 18.13,14,19-24)
53Jesus was led off to the high priest. Then the chief priests, the nation's leaders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses all met together. 54Peter had followed at a distance. And when he reached the courtyard of the high priest's house, he sat down with the guards to warm himself beside a fire.
55The chief priests and the whole council tried to find someone to accuse Jesus of a crime, so they could put him to death. But they could not find anyone to accuse him. 56Many people did tell lies against Jesus, but they did not agree on what they said. 57Finally, some men stood up and lied about him. They said, 58“We heard him say he would tear down this temple that we built. He also claimed that in three days he would build another one without any help.”#Jn 2.19. 59But even then they did not agree on what they said.
60The high priest stood up in the council and asked Jesus, “Why don't you say something in your own defence? Don't you hear the charges they are making against you?” 61But Jesus kept quiet and did not say a word. The high priest asked him another question, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the glorious God?”#14.61 Son of the glorious God: “Son of God” was one of the titles used for the kings of Israel.
62“Yes, I am!” Jesus answered.#Dn 7.13.
“Soon you will see
the Son of Man
sitting at the right side#14.62 right side: See the note at 12.36.
of God All-Powerful,
and coming with the clouds
of heaven.”
63At once the high priest ripped his robe apart and shouted, “Why do we need more witnesses? 64You heard him claim to be God! What is your decision?” They all agreed that he should be put to death.#Lv 24.16.
65Some of the people started spitting on Jesus. They blindfolded him, hit him with their fists, and said, “Tell us who hit you!” Then the guards took charge of Jesus and beat him.
Peter says he doesn't know Jesus
(Matthew 26.69-75; Luke 22.56-62; John 18.15-18,25-27)
66While Peter was still in the courtyard, a servant girl of the high priest came up 67and saw Peter warming himself by the fire. She stared at him and said, “You were with Jesus from Nazareth!”
68Peter replied, “That isn't true! I don't know what you're talking about. I don't have any idea what you mean.” He went out to the gate, and a cock crowed.#14.68 a cock crowed: These words are not in some manuscripts.
69The servant girl saw Peter again and said to the people standing there, “This man is one of them!”
70“No, I'm not!” Peter replied.
A little while later some of the people said to Peter, “You certainly are one of them. You're a Galilean!”
71This time Peter began to curse and swear, “I don't even know the man you're talking about!”
72Straight away the cock crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered that Jesus had told him, “Before a cock crows twice, you will say three times that you don't know me.” So Peter started crying.
