Joshua 2
2
1And Joshua the son of Nun sent from Shittim two spies secretly, saying, Go, see the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into a harlot's house, named Rahab, and they lay down there. 2And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, men have come hither to-night from the children of Israel to search out the land. 3And the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that have come to thee, who have come into thy house: for they have come to search out all the land. 4And the woman had taken and concealed the two men; and she said, Yes, the men did come unto me, but I knew not whence they were; 5and it came to pass when the gate had to be closed, at dark, that the men went out: I know not whither the men have gone. Pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them. 6But she had taken them up to the roof, and secreted them under the stalks of flax, which she had laid out on the roof. 7And the men pursued after them the way to the Jordan, to the fords; and when they who pursued after them had gone out, they closed the gate.
8And before they had lain down, she went up to them upon the roof; 9and said to the men, I know that Jehovah has given you the land, and that the dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. 10For we have heard that Jehovah dried up the waters of the Red sea before you when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. 11We heard of it, and our heart melted, and there remained no more spirit in any man because of you; for Jehovah your God#GodHebrew: Elohim he is God#GodHebrew: Elohim in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. 12And now, I pray you, swear to me by Jehovah, since I have dealt kindly with you, that ye will also deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a certain sign, 13that ye will let my father live, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that belong to them, and deliver our souls from death. 14And the men said to her, Our lives shall pay for yours, if ye do not make this our business known; and it shall be when Jehovah shall give us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee. 15And she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was upon the city-wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. 16And she said to them, Go to the mountain, that the pursuers may not meet with you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned; and afterwards go your way. 17And the men said to her, We will be quit of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear. 18Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind in the window this line of scarlet thread by which thou hast let us down; and thou shalt gather to thee in the house thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household; 19and it shall be, that whoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, — his blood shall be upon his head, and we shall be innocent; but every one who shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be upon our head, if any hand be upon him. 20And if thou make known this our business, we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us swear. 21And she said, According to your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed. And she bound the scarlet line in the window.
22And they went, and came to the mountain, and remained there three days, until the pursuers had returned; and the pursuers sought them all the way, and found them not. 23And the two men returned and came down from the mountain, and went over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and related to him everything that had happened to them. 24And they said to Joshua, Of a surety Jehovah has given the whole land into our hands, and even all the inhabitants of the land faint because of us.

Rahab Hides the Spies
1And Joshua the son of Nun #Num. 25:1 sent#2:1 Or had sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of #Heb. 11:31; James 2:25 a prostitute whose name was #Matt. 1:5Rahab and lodged there. 2And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” 3Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” 4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.” 6But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof. 7So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan #Judg. 3:28; 7:24as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out.
8Before the men#2:8 Hebrew they lay down, she came up to them on the roof 9and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, #Ex. 15:16; 23:27 and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land #ver. 11, 24; Ex. 15:15melt away before you. 10For we have heard how the Lord #ch. 4:23; Ex. 14:21 dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and #See Num. 21:23-26, 33-35 what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to #Ps. 135:11; 136:19, 20Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.#2:10 That is, set apart (devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction) 11And #Ex. 15:14, 15 as soon as we heard it, #ver. 9; ch. 5:1; 7:5; [2 Sam. 17:10; Ps. 22:14; Isa. 13:7; Ezek. 21:7] our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for #Deut. 4:39the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. 12Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and #ver. 18give me a sure sign 13that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” 14And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land #Judg. 1:24, 25we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.”
15Then she #1 Sam. 19:12; Acts 9:25; 2 Cor. 11:33let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall. 16And she said#2:16 Or had said to them, “Go into the hills, or the pursuers will encounter you, and hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Then afterward you may go your way.” 17The men said to her, “We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear. 18#ver. 12 Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, #ver. 12; ch. 6:23and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household. 19Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, #[Matt. 27:25]his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. 20But if you #ver. 14tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear.” 21And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
22They departed and went into the hills and remained there three days until the pursuers returned, and the pursuers searched all along the way and found nothing. 23Then the two men returned. They came down from the hills and #ver. 7passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them. 24And they said to Joshua, “Truly #ch. 21:44; Ex. 23:31 the Lord has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land #ver. 9melt away because of us.”
