Job 37
37
1Aye, my heart trembleth at this also, and leapeth up out of its place: 2Hear attentively the roar of his voice, and the murmur going forth from his mouth. 3He sendeth it forth under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth. 4After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency, and holdeth not back the flashes when his voice is heard. 5·God#GodHebrew: El thundereth marvellously with his voice, doing great things which we do not comprehend.
6For he saith to the snow, Fall on the earth! and to the pouring rain, even the pouring rains of his might. 7He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work. 8And the wild beast goeth into its lair, and they remain in their dens. 9From the chamber of the south cometh the whirlwind; and cold from the winds of the north. 10By the breath of ·God#GodHebrew: El ice is given; and the breadth of the waters is straitened. 11Also with plentiful moisture he loadeth the thick clouds, his light dispels the cloud; 12And they are turned every way by his guidance, that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the circuit of the earth, 13Whether he cause it to come as a rod, or for his land, or in mercy.
14Hearken unto this, Job; stand still and discern the wondrous works of ·God#GodHebrew: El 15Dost thou know how +God#GodHebrew: Eloah hath disposed them, and how he causeth the lightning of his cloud to flash? 16Dost thou know about the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him that is perfect in knowledge? 17How thy garments become warm when he quieteth the earth by the south wind? 18Hast thou with him spread out the sky, firm, like a molten mirror? 19Teach us what we shall say unto him! We cannot order our words by reason of darkness. 20Shall it be told him if I would speak? if a man so say, surely he shall be swallowed up.
21And now men see not the light as it gleameth, it is hidden in the skies. But the wind passeth by and cleareth them. 22From the north cometh gold; with +God#GodHebrew: Eloah is terrible majesty. 23The Almighty, we cannot find him out: excellent in power, and in judgment, and in abundance of justice, he doth not afflict. 24Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.

Job 37

Elihu Continues: God’s Ways Are Beyond Human Understanding
1“My heart pounds because of this
and jumps out of its place.
2Listen! Listen to the roar of God’s voice,
to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
3He flashes his lightning everywhere under heaven.
His light flashes to the ends of the earth.
4It is followed by the roar of his voice.
He thunders with his majestic voice.
He doesn’t hold the lightning back when his thunder is heard.
5God’s voice thunders in miraculous ways.
It does great things that we cannot understand.
6“He says to the snow, ‘Fall to the ground,’
and to the pouring rain, ‘Rain harder!’
7He makes it impossible to do anything #37:7 Or “He seals up every person’s hand.”
so that people will recognize his work.
8Animals go into their dens
and stay in their lairs.
9A storm comes out of its chamber.
It is cold because of the strong winds.
10God’s breath produces ice,
and the seas freeze over.
11Yes, he loads the thick clouds with moisture
and scatters his lightning from the clouds.
12He guides the clouds as they churn round and round
over the face of the inhabited earth
to do everything he orders them.
13Whether for discipline,
or for ⌞the good of⌟ his earth,
or out of mercy,
he makes the storm appear.
14“Open your ears to this, Job.
Stop and consider God’s miracles.
15Do you know how God controls them
and makes the lightning flash from his clouds?
16Do you know how the clouds drift
(these are the miracles of the one who knows everything),
17you whose clothes are hot and sweaty,
when the earth is calm under a south wind?
18Can you stretch out the skies with him
and make them as firm as a mirror made of metal?
19Teach us what we should say to him.
We are unable to prepare ⌞a case⌟ because of darkness.
20Should he be told that I want to speak?
Can a person speak when he is confused?
21People can’t look at the sun
when it’s bright among the clouds
or after the wind has blown and cleared those clouds away.
22A golden light comes from the north.
A terrifying majesty is around God.
23The Almighty, whom we can’t reach,
is great in power and judgment,
has more than enough righteousness,
and does not oppress.
24That is why people should fear him.
He does not respect those who think they’re wise.”
