John 9
9
1And as he passed on, he saw a man blind from birth. 2And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind? 3Jesus answered, Neither has this man sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be manifested in him. 4I must work the works of him that has sent me while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work. 5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. 6Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud of the spittle, and put the mud, as ointment, on his eyes. 7And he said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore and washed, and came seeing.
8The neighbours therefore, and those who used to see him before, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that was sitting and begging? 9Some said, It is he; others said, No, but he is like him: he said, It is I. 10They said therefore to him, How have thine eyes been opened? 11He answered and said, A man called Jesus made mud and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash: and having gone and washed, I saw. 12They said therefore to him, Where is he? He says, I do not know.
13They bring him who was before blind to the Pharisees. 14Now it was sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15The Pharisees therefore also again asked him how he received his sight. And he said to them, He put mud upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see. 16Some of the Pharisees therefore said, This man is not of God, for he does not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man perform such signs? And there was a division among them. 17They say therefore again to the blind man, What dost thou say of him, that he has opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. 18The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him that he was blind and had received sight, until they had called the parents of him that had received sight. 19And they asked them saying, This is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind: how then does he now see? 20His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21but how he now sees we do not know, or who has opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age: ask him; he will speak concerning himself. 22His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if any one confessed him to be the Christ, he should be excommunicated from the synagogue. 23On this account his parents said, He is of age: ask him. 24They called therefore a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is sinful. 25He answered therefore, If he is sinful I know not. One thing I know, that, being blind before, now I see. 26And they said to him again, What did he do to thee? how opened he thine eyes? 27He answered them, I told you already and ye did not hear: why do ye desire to hear again? do ye also wish to become his disciples? 28They railed at him, and said, Thou art his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29We know that God spoke to Moses; but as to this man, we know not whence he is. 30The man answered and said to them, Now in this is a wonderful thing, that ye do not know whence he is, and he has opened mine eyes. 31But we know that God does not hear sinners; but if any one be God-fearing and do his will, him he hears. 32Since time was, it has not been heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind. 33If this man were not of God he would be able to do nothing. 34They answered and said to him, Thou hast been wholly born in sins, and thou teachest us? And they cast him out.
35Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said to him, Thou, dost thou believe on the Son of God? 36He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him? 37And Jesus said to him, Thou hast both seen him, and he that speaks with thee is he. 38And he said, I believe, Lord: and he did him homage.
39And Jesus said, For judgment am I come into this world, that they which see not may see, and they which see may become blind. 40And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, Are we blind also? 41Jesus said to them, If ye were blind ye would not have sin; but now ye say, We see, your sin remains.

Jesus heals a man born blind
1As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’
3 ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned,’ said Jesus, ‘but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no-one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’
6After saying this, he spat on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7‘Go,’ he told him, ‘wash in the Pool of Siloam’ (this word means ‘Sent’). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
8His neighbours and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, ‘Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?’ 9Some claimed that he was.
Others said, ‘No, he only looks like him.’
But he himself insisted, ‘I am the man.’
10‘How then were your eyes opened?’ they asked.
11He replied, ‘The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.’
12‘Where is this man?’ they asked him.
‘I don’t know,’ he said.
The Pharisees investigate the healing
13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath. 15Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. ‘He put mud on my eyes,’ the man replied, ‘and I washed, and now I see.’
16Some of the Pharisees said, ‘This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.’
But others asked, ‘How can a sinner perform such signs?’ So they were divided.
17Then they turned again to the blind man, ‘What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.’
The man replied, ‘He is a prophet.’
18They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19‘Is this your son?’ they asked. ‘Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?’
20‘We know he is our son,’ the parents answered, ‘and we know he was born blind. 21But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.’ 22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. 23That was why his parents said, ‘He is of age; ask him.’
24A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. ‘Give glory to God by telling the truth,’ they said. ‘We know this man is a sinner.’
25He replied, ‘Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!’
26Then they asked him, ‘What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?’
27He answered, ‘I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?’
28Then they hurled insults at him and said, ‘You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses! 29We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.’
30The man answered, ‘Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will. 32Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.’
34To this they replied, ‘You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!’ And they threw him out.
Spiritual blindness
35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’
36‘Who is he, sir?’ the man asked. ‘Tell me so that I may believe in him.’
37Jesus said, ‘You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.’
38Then the man said, ‘Lord, I believe,’ and he worshipped him.
39Jesus said,#9:38,39 Some early manuscripts do not have Then the man said… 39 Jesus said, ‘For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.’
40Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, ‘What? Are we blind too?’
41Jesus said, ‘If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
