3 John 1
1
1The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth. 2Beloved, I desire that in all things thou shouldest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospers.
3For I rejoiced exceedingly when the brethren came and bore testimony to thy holding fast the truth, even as thou walkest in truth. 4I have no greater joy than these things that I hear of my children walking in the truth. 5Beloved, thou doest faithfully in whatever thou mayest have wrought towards the brethren and that strangers, 6(who have witnessed of thy love before the assembly,) in setting forward whom on their journey worthily of God, thou wilt do well; 7for for the name have they gone forth, taking nothing of those of the nations. 8We therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow-workers with the truth.
9I wrote something to the assembly; but Diotrephes, who loves to have the first place among them, receives us not. 10For this reason, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he does, babbling against us with wicked words; and not content with these, neither does he himself receive the brethren; and those who would he prevents, and casts them out of the assembly. 11Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He that does good is of God. He that does evil has not seen God.
12Demetrius has witness borne to him by all, and by the truth itself; and we also bear witness, and thou knowest that our witness is true. 13I had many things to write to thee, but I will not with ink and pen write to thee; 14but I hope soon to see thee, and we will speak mouth to mouth. Peace be to thee. The friends greet thee. Greet the friends by name.

Salutation
1The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
Gaius Commended for His Hospitality
2Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul. 3I was overjoyed when some of the friends#1.3 Gk brothers arrived and testified to your faithfulness to the truth, namely how you walk in the truth. 4I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
5Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the friends,#1.5 Gk brothers even though they are strangers to you; 6they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on in a manner worthy of God; 7for they began their journey for the sake of Christ,#1.7 Gk for the sake of the name accepting no support from non-believers.#1.7 Gk the Gentiles 8Therefore we ought to support such people, so that we may become co-workers with the truth.
Diotrephes and Demetrius
9I have written something to the church; but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. 10So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing in spreading false charges against us. And not content with those charges, he refuses to welcome the friends,#1.10 Gk brothers and even prevents those who want to do so and expels them from the church.
11Beloved, do not imitate what is evil but imitate what is good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God. 12Everyone has testified favorably about Demetrius, and so has the truth itself. We also testify for him,#1.12 Gk lacks for him and you know that our testimony is true.
Final Greetings
13I have much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink; 14instead I hope to see you soon, and we will talk together face to face.
15Peace to you. The friends send you their greetings. Greet the friends there, each by name.
