1 Chronicles 17
17
1And it came to pass as David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Behold, I dwell in a house of cedars, and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah under curtains. 2And Nathan said to David, Do all that is in thy heart; for God#GodHebrew: Elohim is with thee. 3And it came to pass that night that the word of God#GodHebrew: Elohim came to Nathan saying, 4Go and say to David my servant, Thus saith Jehovah: Thou shalt not build me a house to dwell in; 5for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up Israel to this day; but I have been from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another. 6In all my going about with all Israel, did I speak a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why build ye me not a house of cedars? 7And now, thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: I took thee from the pasture-grounds, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel; 8and I have been with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name, like unto the name of the great men that are on the earth. 9And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and be disturbed no more; neither shall the sons of wickedness waste them any more, as formerly, 10and since the days that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. And I will subdue all thine enemies; and I tell thee that Jehovah will build thee a house. 11And it shall come to pass, when thy days are fulfilled that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12It is he who shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne for ever. 13I will be his father, and he shall be my son; and I will not take away my mercy from him, as I took it from him that was before thee; 14and I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom for ever; and his throne shall be established for ever. 15According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak to David.
16And king David went in and sat before Jehovah, and said, Who am I, Jehovah Elohim, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? 17And this hath been a small thing in thy sight, O God#GodHebrew: Elohim and thou hast spoken of thy servant's house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the rank of a man of high degree, Jehovah Elohim. 18What can David say more to thee for the glory of thy servant? thou indeed knowest thy servant. 19Jehovah, for thy servant's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, to make known all these great things. 20Jehovah, there is none like thee, neither is there any God#GodHebrew: Elohim beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21And who is like thy people Israel, the one nation in the earth that God#GodHebrew: Elohim went to redeem to be a people to himself, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, which thou hast redeemed out of Egypt? 22And thy people Israel hast thou made thine own people for ever; and thou, Jehovah, art become their God#GodHebrew: Elohim 23And now, Jehovah, let the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said. 24Let it even be established, and let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, Jehovah of hosts, the God#GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, is God#GodHebrew: Elohim to Israel; and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee. 25For thou, my God#GodHebrew: Elohim hast revealed to thy servant that thou wilt build him a house; therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray before thee. 26And now, Jehovah, thou art that God#GodHebrew: Elohim and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant; 27and now, let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever; for thou, Jehovah, hast blessed it, and it shall be blessed for ever.

The Lord's Message to David
(2 Samuel 7.1-17)
1Soon after David moved into his new palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Look around! I live in a palace made of cedar, but the sacred chest is kept in a tent.”
2Nathan replied, “The Lord is with you—do what you want.”
3That night, the Lord told Nathan 4to go to David and tell him:
David, you are my servant, so listen carefully: You are not the one to build a temple for me. 5I didn't live in a temple when I brought my people out of Egypt, and I don't live in one now. A tent has always been my home wherever I have gone with them. 6I chose special leaders and told them to be like shepherds for my people Israel. But did I ever say anything to even one of them about building a cedar temple for me?
7David, this is what I, the Lord All-Powerful, say to you. I brought you in from the fields where you took care of sheep, and I made you the leader of my people. 8Wherever you went, I helped you and destroyed your enemies right in front of your eyes. I have made you one of the most famous people in the world.
9I have given my people Israel a land of their own where they can live in peace. They will no longer have to tremble with fear—evil nations won't bother them, as they did 10when I let judges rule my people, and I will keep your enemies from attacking you.
Now I promise that like you, your descendants will be kings. 11I'll choose one of your sons to be king when you reach the end of your life and are buried beside your ancestors. I'll make him a strong ruler, 12and no one will be able to take his kingdom away from him. He will be the one to build a temple for me. 13#2 Co 6.18; He 1.5. I will be like a father to him, and he will be like a son to me. I will never put an end to my agreement with him, as I put an end to my agreement with Saul, who was king before you. 14I will make sure that your son and his descendants will rule my people and my kingdom forever.
15Nathan told David exactly what the Lord had said.
David Gives Thanks to the Lord
(2 Samuel 7.18-29)
16David went into the tent he had set up for the sacred chest. He sat there and prayed:
Lord God, my family and I don't deserve what you have already done for us, 17and yet you have promised to do even more for my descendants. You are treating me as if I am a very important person.#17.17 You are treating me … person: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. 18I am your servant, and you know my thoughts. What else can I say, except that you have honored me? 19It was your choice to do these wonderful things for me and to make these promises.
20No other god is like you, Lord—you alone are God. Everything we have heard about you is true. 21And there is no other nation on earth like Israel, the nation you rescued from slavery in Egypt to be your own. You became famous by using great and wonderful miracles to force other nations and their gods out of your land, so that your people could live here. 22You have chosen Israel to be your people forever, and you have become their God.
23 Lord God, please do what you promised me and my descendants. 24Then you will be famous forever, and everyone will say, “The Lord All-Powerful rules Israel and is their God.”
My kingdom will be strong, 25because you are my God, and you have promised that my descendants will be kings. That's why I have the courage to pray to you like this, even though I am only your servant.
26You are the Lord God, and you have made this good promise to me. 27Now please bless my descendants forever, and let them always be your chosen kings. You have already blessed my family, and I know you will bless us forever.
