Titus 3
3
Submission to Governing Authorities
1 Remind them to be submissive to rulers and to authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, 2 to speak evil of no one, to avoid fighting, gentle, showing utmost consideration for all men.*
The Grace of God and Good Works
3 For we also were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, serving various desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love for mankind of God our Saviour appeared, 5 He saved us, not by works which we did in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, 7 so that, having been justified by His grace, we may become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8 The saying is trustworthy, and concerning these things I want you to assert them emphatically, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are good and beneficial for men.*
Final Instructions and Greetings
9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies* and contentions and quarrels about the Law, for they are useless and worthless. 10 Have no further dealings with a divisive man* after a first and second admonition, 11 knowing that such an individual is perverted and persists in sin, being self-condemned.
12 When I send Artemas to you, or Tychicus, make every effort to come to me in Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. 13 Diligently provide for Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey so that they lack nothing. 14 And let our people also learn to devote themselves to good works for necessary needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.
15 All those with me send their greetings. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with all of you.*
Notes
2 Or people, as the term is generically understood. So also v. 8
9 Two ancient Greek manuscripts replace this word with disputes about words, in order to harmonise the reading with a similar parallel in 1 Tim. 6:4
10 Or person, as the term is generically understood
15 Some ancient manuscripts insert Amen at this point
