The Man With a Shrivelled Hand
Matt. 12:9-14; Lk. 6.6-11
1 Now again He entered into the synagogue, and a man who had a shrivelled hand was there. 2 And they were observing Him carefully to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath,* so that they might accuse Him. 3 And He said to the man who had the shrivelled hand, “Stand up in the middle.” 4 And He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they kept silent. 5 And having looked around at them with anger, being grieved at the hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 So the Pharisees went out and immediately began to take counsel against Him, how they might destroy Him.
A Large Crowd Follows Jesus at the Seaside
7 But Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea, and a large crowd from Galilee and from Judea followed, 8 and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea,* and the other side of the Jordan, and around Tyre and Sidon, a large crowd came to Him, having heard all that He was doing. 9 And He told His disciples to have a boat prepared for Him because of the throng, so that they would not crowd Him; 10 for He had healed many, so that all those who had diseases pressed around Him in order that they might touch Him. 11 And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, would fall down before Him, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God.” 12 And He would strongly rebuke them not to make Him known.
The Appointment of the Twelve
Matt. 10:1-4; Lk. 6:12-16
13 And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. 14 And He appointed twelve, whom He also named apostles,* so that they might be with Him, and so that He might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to cast out the demons. 16 And He appointed the twelve: And to Simon, He gave the name Peter; 17 and James, the son* of Zebedee, and John, the brother of James (and to them He gave the name Boanerges, that is, “Sons of Thunder”); 18 and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James, the son* of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite;* 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.
Jesus and the Scribes
Matt. 12:22-32; Lk. 11:14-23; 12:10
20 Then He went to His* house, and the crowd came together again, so that they were not even able to eat bread. 21 And when His family* heard this, they went out to take charge of Him, for they were saying, “He is out of His mind.”
22 And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem kept saying, “He has Beelzebul,” and “By the ruler of the demons, He casts out the demons.” 23 So He called them to Himself and began to speak to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 And if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is approaching an end! 27 But no one can enter the house of a strong man and plunder his belongings unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house. 28 “Truly, I say to you that all things will be forgiven the sons of men: * the sins and whatever blasphemies they may utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit does not have forgiveness forever, ** but is guilty of an eternal sin” 30 for they kept saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
The Mother and Brothers of Jesus
Matt. 12:46-50; Lk. 8:19-21
31 And His mother and His brothers came, and while standing outside, they sent to Him, calling for Him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, “See, Your mother and Your brothers* are outside looking for You.” 33 But in response, He said to them, “Who are My mother and My brothers?” 34 And looking around at those who were sitting in a circle around Him, He said, “Behold, My Mother and My brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, this is My brother and sister and mother.”
