Acts 19

19
Paul in Ephesus
1 And it occurred that, while Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “But we have not even heard that the Holy Spirit exists.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptised?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 And Paul said, “John baptised with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the One who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 And having heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. 7 Now there were about twelve men in all.
8 And he entered into the synagogue, and was speaking boldly for three months, discussing and persuading them concerning the kingdom of God. 9 But when some became hardened and continued to disbelieve, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation; he withdrew from them and took separately the disciples, discussing every day in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10 And this happened for two years, with the result that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
11 Now God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 with the result that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were brought to the sick, and their diseases departed from them and the evil spirits came out of them. 13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists also endeavoured to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Now seven sons of a certain Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 But the evil spirit answered and said to them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with, but who are you?” 16 And the man in whom was the evil spirit sprang upon them, overpowered all of them, and prevailed against them, with the result that they fled out of that house stripped and wounded. 17 And this became known to all who lived in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified. 18 And many of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and revealing their deeds; 19 and many of those who had practised magic arts brought together their books and burned them up in the sight of everyone. And they counted up their prices and found it was fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 Thus the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail.
21 Now when these events* were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, “After I have been there, It is necessary for me to see Rome also.” 22 And having sent into Macedonia two of those who were assisting him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed for a time in Asia.
23 Now at that time, a significant disturbance arose concerning the Way. 24 For a certain person, Demetrius by name, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing considerable profit to the craftsmen; 25 who, having convened together, with the workmen in related trades, said, “Men, you are aware that from this business we derive our wealth. 26 You also see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in nearly all of Asia, this man Paul has persuaded and caused a large crowd to turn aside by saying that the gods made by hands are not gods. 27 And not only is there a danger this business of ours will come into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing, and she may even be deposed from her majesty, she, whom all Asia and the world worship.”
28 And when they heard this and became full of indignation, they were crying out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29 So the city was filled with the chaos, and with one accord they surged into the theatre, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s Macedonian fellow travellers. 30 But when Paul intended to enter the midst of the people,* the disciples would not allow him. 31 And even some of the Asiarchs, who were his friends sent to him, and were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre.
32 Now some were crying out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in a state of disorder, and the majority were unaware of the purpose for which they had come together. 33 And some of the crowd gave instructions to Alexander, when the Jews pushed him to the front. But Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defence to the people. 34 But when they recognised that he was a Jew, they were crying out with a unified voice for approximately two hours, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35 And when the city secretary had calmed the crowd, he said,
“Men of Ephesus, for who is there among men who is unaware the Ephesian city is temple keeper of the great Artemis and of her image fallen from the sky? 36 Therefore, because these things are indisputable, it is necessary that you be calm and do nothing rash. 37 For you have brought these men here, who are neither temple plunderers nor blasphemers of our goddess. 38 If, therefore, Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a grievance against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring their legal case against one another. 39 But if you seek anything further, it will be addressed in the lawful assembly. 40 For indeed, we are in danger of being indicted for rioting in regard to today’s events,* since there is no valid reason, and in this regard we will not be able to offer any justification for this commotion.” 41 And when he had said these things, he dissolved the assembly.
