Acts 1

1
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
1 I composed the first account, O Theophilus, about all the things which Jesus began to do and to teach, 2 up to the day He was taken up, after He had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, with many irresistible proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God. 4 And assembling them together, He charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, He said, “you heard from Me; 5 for John baptised with water, but you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” *
6 So when they had come together, they began to ask Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring* the kingdom to Israel?” 7 But He said to them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons which the Father has fixed by His own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the furthermost part of the earth.”
The Ascension of Jesus
9 And after He had said these things, while they were looking, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him from their sight. 10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood by them, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven** like this, will come back in the same way you looked closely at Him going into heaven.”
The Divine Choice of Matthias
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain, which is called Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room where they were staying—Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus* and Simon the Zealot and Judas son of James.* 14 These all were continually devoting themselves, with one mind, to prayer, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
15 And in those days, Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (it was a crowd of persons* of about a hundred and twenty gathered* at the same place), and he said, 16 “Men and brothers, it was necessary for the Scripture to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold through the mouth of David concerning Judas, the one who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us and obtained a share in this ministry.” 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his unrighteousness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines flowed out. 19 And it became known to all those who were living in Jerusalem, so that that field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the book of Psalms:
‘Let his dwelling become desolate,
and let there be no one to live in it’;*
and,
‘Let another person take his office.’*
21 Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time which the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us— 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day in which He was taken up from us—one of these men must become a witness of His resurrection with us.” 23 And they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was called Justus) and Matthias. 24 And having prayed, they said, “You, Lord, Knower of the hearts of all, show clearly which one of these two You have chosen 25 to take the place of this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was counted among the eleven apostles.
