2 Corinthians 7
7
1 Therefore, since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Paul’s Joy Over Genuine Repentance
2 Make room for us in your hearts.* We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. 3 I do not say this to condemn you, for I have said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. 4 Great is my boldness towards you; great is my boasting on your behalf. I am filled with encouragement. In all our distress, I overflow with joy beyond measure.
5 For even when we came into Macedonia, our flesh* had no rest, but we were afflicted in every way—conflicts without, fears within. 6 But God, the One who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus; 7 and not only by his coming, but also by the comfort with which he was comforted by you, relating to us your longing, your sorrow, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced even more. 8 For even if I grieved you by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that that letter grieved you, even though for a while— 9 I now rejoice, not that you were grieved, but that you were grieved unto repentance. For you were grieved according to the intention of God,* so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. 10 For grief according to the intention of God produces a repentance without regret, resulting in salvation, but worldly grief works out death. 11 For behold, how great an eagerness this very thing—having been grieved according to the intention of God—has worked out in you: what defence of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what vindication! In every respect, you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So, even though I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one who did wrong, nor for the sake of the one who suffered wrong, but that your earnestness on our behalf might be made known to you in the sight of God. 13 For this reason, we have been encouraged. And beyond our encouragement, we rejoiced much more at the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 For if I have boasted anything to him about you, I was not put to shame. But as we have spoken all things to you in truth, so also our boasting to Titus has proved to be the truth. 15 And his affections for you are all the greater, as he remembers the obedience of all of you—how you received him with fear and trembling. 16 I rejoice, because in everything, I have confidence in you.
