The Example of Christ
1 But we who are strong in faith and have clear consciences about our Christian liberty ought to bear patiently with and support the weaknesses and scruples of those who are weak in faith, and not simply please ourselves and insist on our own rights.
2 Let each one of us seek to please his neighbour and fellow believer for his spiritual good and benefit, with a view to building him up.
3 For even Christ, our ultimate example, did not please Himself or seek His own comfort, but rather, just as it stands written in Scripture: "The reproaches and insults of those who reproach You, O God, have fallen upon Me."
4 For whatever was written previously in the Old Testament Scriptures was written for our instruction and learning, so that through patient endurance and through the encouragement that the Scriptures provide we may have hope.
Prayer for Spiritual Unity
5 Now may the God who gives patient perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another—living in harmony—in accordance with the example and teaching of Christ Jesus,
6 So that with one united mind and purpose, and with one mouth speaking in unison, you may glorify and bring honour to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7 Therefore, receive one another into fellowship, just as Christ also received you into His family, and do this for the glory of God.
The Universal Calling of Christ
8 For I declare this truth: Christ has become a minister to the circumcised—the Jewish people—for the sake of demonstrating God's truthfulness, in order to confirm and fulfil the promises that were given to the patriarchs and fathers,
9 And also so that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy shown to them, just as it stands written in Scripture:
"For this reason, I will give praise and acknowledgment to You among the Gentiles,
and I will sing praises to Your name."
10 And again, Scripture says:
"Rejoice, O Gentiles, together with His people"—joining Israel in worship.
11 And again:
"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and let all the peoples and nations praise and extol Him."
12 And again, Isaiah prophesies and says:
"There will emerge the root of Jesse—the Messiah from David's line—
and the One who rises to rule over the Gentiles;
in Him the Gentiles will place their hope."*
13 Now may the God who is the source of hope fill you completely with all joy and peace that come through believing and trusting in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit working in you.
Paul's Apostolic Calling to the Gentiles
14 Now I myself am also convinced concerning you, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness and moral excellence, filled with all spiritual knowledge, and fully able to admonish, instruct, and counsel one another.
15 But I have written to you quite boldly and forthrightly in certain sections of this letter, so as to remind you once again of these truths, writing with this boldness because of the grace that has been given to me by God,
16 With the intention of being a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, performing the sacred priestly service of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles—the Gentiles themselves presented to God—may become acceptable to Him, having been sanctified and made holy by the Holy Spirit.
17 Therefore, I have a legitimate ground for boasting and taking pride in Christ Jesus with respect to the things that pertain to God and His service—though all credit goes to Christ working through me.
18 For I will not dare to speak presumptuously about anything except that which Christ has actually accomplished through me in bringing about the obedience of the Gentiles to the gospel, working through my word and deed,
19 By the power of miraculous signs and wonders, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, so that from Jerusalem as my starting point and extending all around in a wide circuit as far as Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.
20 And in this manner, I made it my ambition to preach the gospel not where Christ had already been named and was known, so that I would not be building on another person's foundation of ministry.
21 But rather, just as it stands written in Scripture:
"Those to whom nothing has been announced concerning Him will see and understand,
and those who have not heard will comprehend"*—I sought to reach the unreached.
Paul's Travel Plans
22 For this reason—being occupied with pioneer missionary work—I have also been repeatedly hindered from coming to visit you.
23 But now, since I no longer have any place or open field for pioneer work remaining in these regions, and since I have had a longing for many years—a considerable number of years—to come to you,
24 I hope to visit you whenever I journey to Spain, for I hope to see you whilst passing through Rome on my way, and to be sent on my journey and assisted by you with provisions and support, after I have first enjoyed your company and fellowship for a while.
25 But at the present time, I am travelling to Jerusalem to serve the saints there by delivering a financial gift.
26 For the believers in Macedonia and Achaia were pleased and decided to make a generous contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.
27 For they were pleased to do this voluntarily, and indeed they are debtors to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jewish believers' spiritual blessings, they are also obligated to minister to them with their material and physical resources.
28 Therefore, when I have completed this task and officially delivered and sealed this fruit of their generosity to them, I will depart and travel by way of you to Spain.
29 And I know with confidence that when I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing and spiritual abundance of Christ.
Appeal for Prayer, and Benediction
30 Now I earnestly urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love that the Holy Spirit produces, to join together and contend earnestly with me in your prayers to God on my behalf,
31 That I may be rescued from those who do not believe in Judea, and that my service of delivering this gift in Jerusalem may be pleasing to the saints there,
32 So that when I come to you with joy according to God's will and sovereign plan, I may find refreshment and rest together with you.
33 Now may the God of peace—who gives and establishes peace—be with all of you. Amen.
