The Temptation of Jesus
Mk. 1:12-13; Lk. 4:1-13
1 Subsequently, immediately after His baptism, Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit deliberately to be tempted by the devil—to prove His qualification as the sinless Messiah.
2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry afterwards, physically weakened and vulnerable.
3 And the tempter, Satan, came and approached Him and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God—since You claim to be—speak and command that these stones become bread to satisfy Your hunger and prove Your power."
4 But in response, He said, quoting Scripture, "It is written in Deuteronomy:
'Man shall not live on bread alone,
but on every word which proceeds out of the mouth of God'"*
5 After this, the devil took Him to the holy city, Jerusalem, and placed Him on the pinnacle of the temple—the highest point overlooking the valley,
6 And he said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here, for it is written in the Psalms:
'He will give orders to His angels concerning You,'
and
'On their hands they will carry You, lest You strike Your foot against a stone'"*
7 Jesus said to him, "Once more, it is also written,
'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test'"*
8 Once more, the devil took Him to a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory and splendour in a moment,
9 And he said to Him, "All these things—all this power and authority—I will give to You, if You will fall down and worship me," offering a shortcut to messianic rule without the cross.
10 Then Jesus said to him with authority,
"Depart, Satan! Be gone! For it is written:
'You shall worship the Lord your God
and Him only you shall serve'"*
11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and began attending to Him and ministering to His needs.
The Beginning of Jesus' Galilean Ministry
Mk. 1:14-15; Lk. 4:14-15
12 Now, having heard that John had been arrested and imprisoned by Herod Antipas, Jesus withdrew and returned to Galilee to begin His public ministry there.
13 And leaving Nazareth, His hometown, He went and settled and lived in Capernaum—making it His base of operations—which is by the Sea of Galilee, in the region and territory of Zebulun and Naphtali.
14 This was to fulfil what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, which says,
15 "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—a region despised and overlooked—
16 the people sitting and dwelling in darkness and ignorance have seen a great light of revelation,
and for those sitting and dwelling in the territory and shadow of death,
a light has dawned and risen upon them"*—Jesus bringing salvation to the despised regions.
17 From that time on, Jesus began to preach publicly, saying, "Repent and turn from your sins, for the kingdom of heaven has drawn near and God's reign is at hand."
Jesus Calls the Four Fishermen
18 Now, as He was walking beside the Sea of Galilee one day, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen by trade.
19 And He spoke to them with a call, "Come, follow Me as My disciples, and I will make you fishers of men, catching people for the kingdom of God."
20 And immediately, without hesitation, they left the nets and followed Him in full commitment.
21 And going on from there along the shore, He saw two other brothers: James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother, in the boat with Zebedee, their father, repairing their nets; and He called them with the same invitation.
22 And without delay, they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
Jesus' Three-fold Ministry
Lk. 6:17-19
23 And He went around travelling through all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues—instructing people in God's truth, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom—proclaiming the good news of God's saving reign, and healing every disease and every illness and infirmity amongst the people—demonstrating His divine authority and compassion.
24 And the report regarding Him and His miraculous works spread throughout all Syria, and they brought to Him all the sick and afflicted: those who had various diseases and pains, those who were tormented and demon-possessed by evil spirits, and those who were epileptic and paralysed and unable to walk. And He healed them all, demonstrating His power over all forms of human suffering.
25 And large crowds followed Him from Galilee and Decapolis—the region of ten cities—and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan, drawn by His teaching and miracles.
