Concerning Divorce
Mk. 10:1-12
Now it occurred that, when Jesus had finished these sayings about forgiveness, He withdrew from Galilee and came to the region of Judea on the other side of the Jordan River.
And large crowds followed Him, and He healed them in that place.
And Pharisees came to Him, testing Him with a controversial question and asking whether it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatsoever—even trivial reasons.
And in response, He said, "Have you not read in the Scripture that the One who created them from the beginning made them male and female in His design,
and said, 'For this reason, a man will leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife in covenant, and the two will become one flesh in marriage union'?*
So, they are no longer two separate individuals, but one flesh united by God. Therefore, what God has united together in marriage, let no man separate through divorce."
They said to Him, pressing the issue, "Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away if divorce is wrong?"
He said to them, "Moses, in light of the hardness of your hearts and your sinful condition, allowed you to divorce your wives as a concession, but at the beginning in God's original design it was not so.
But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except on the grounds of sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery because the covenant still stands."
The disciples said to Him, troubled by this strict teaching, "If this is the case of a man with his wife—if divorce is nearly impossible, it is better not to marry at all."
But He said to them, "Not everyone is able to accept this saying about celibacy, but only those to whom it has been given as a gift from God.
For there are eunuchs who have been so from their mother's womb by birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men through castration, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs—who have chosen celibacy—for the sake of the kingdom of heaven and undistracted service. The one who is able to accept this calling to celibacy, let him accept it."
Little Children Brought to Jesus
Mk. 10:13-16; Lk. 18:15-17
Then children were brought to Him by their parents, so that He might lay His hands on them and pray for them and bless them, but the disciples rebuked them thinking the children were a distraction.
But Jesus said, "Allow the children to come, and do not prevent them from coming to Me, for it is to such as these—the humble and dependent—the kingdom of heaven belongs."
And He laid His hands on them in blessing and departed from that place.
The Rich Young Man
Mk. 10:17-31; Lk. 18:18-30
And behold, someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do in order that I may have eternal life and earn salvation?"
And He said to him, "For what reason do you ask Me about what is good? There is only One who is good—God Himself. But if you desire to enter life, keep the commandments of God perfectly."
He said to Him, "Which ones must I keep?" And Jesus said, "You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness.*
Honour your father and your mother, and, You shall love your neighbour as yourself."*
The young man said to Him with confidence, "All these requirements I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack to have eternal life?"
Jesus said to him, exposing his heart, "If you desire to be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give the proceeds to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then, come, follow Me as a disciple."
But when the young man heard the statement, he went away grieving, for he was one who had many possessions and great wealth that he loved more than God.
And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly, I say to you that with great difficulty a rich person will enter the kingdom of heaven!
And I say to you once more, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person who trusts in wealth to enter the kingdom of God."
So when the disciples heard this, they were exceedingly struck with amazement, saying, "Who then can be saved if even the wealthy cannot?"
But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible through human effort, but with God all things are possible—including the salvation of the rich."
Then, in response, Peter said to Him, "See, we have left everything and followed You in obedience. What then will there be for us as a reward?"
And Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you that in the regeneration—in the new age—when all things are made new, when the Son of Man sits on His throne of glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields, for the sake of My name will receive a hundredfold return and will inherit eternal life.
On the contrary, many who are first in this age will be last in the kingdom, and the last will be first."
