ACT 14

14
In Iconium
1 In Iconium, Paul and Barnabas followed their customary practice of entering the Jewish synagogue. They presented their message so compellingly that a substantial number of both Jews and Greeks became believers.
2 However, the Jews who refused to believe agitated the Gentile population, poisoning their attitudes towards the believers.
3 Despite this opposition, Paul and Barnabas remained there for an extended period, speaking with confidence about the Lord. The Lord validated their message about His grace by empowering them to perform miraculous signs and wonders.
4 The city's population became divided: some aligned themselves with the Jewish opposition, while others sided with the apostles.
5 When a conspiracy developed among both Gentiles and Jews, along with their leaders, to abuse and stone Paul and Barnabas,
6 they learned of the plot and escaped to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe, as well as the surrounding countryside,
7 where they continued announcing the good news.
In Lystra and Derbe
8 In Lystra, there was a man sitting who had been unable to use his feet from birth—he had never walked.
9 This man listened as Paul spoke. Paul looked directly at him and perceived that he possessed faith to be healed.
10 Paul called out in a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet!" The man leaped up and began walking around.
11 When the crowds witnessed what Paul had done, they began shouting in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have descended to us in human form!"
12 They started calling Barnabas "Zeus" and Paul "Hermes," since Paul was the primary speaker.
13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple stood just outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the city gates. He and the crowds intended to offer sacrifices to them.
14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening, they tore their garments and rushed into the crowd, crying out:
15 "Men, why are you doing this? We are human beings with the same nature as you! We are bringing you good news, urging you to turn away from these empty things to the living God, who created the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them.
16 In past generations, He allowed all the nations to follow their own paths.
17 Yet He never left Himself without witness, for He showed kindness by providing you with rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying you with food and filling your hearts with gladness."
18 Even with these words, they barely restrained the crowds from offering sacrifices to them.
19 Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and persuaded the crowds to turn against them. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, assuming he was dead.
20 But when the disciples gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The following day, he and Barnabas departed for Derbe.
The Return to Lystra, Iconium, and Derbe
21 After proclaiming the good news in that city and making many disciples, they retraced their steps to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,
22 strengthening the disciples' resolve and encouraging them to remain faithful. They told them, "We must pass through many difficulties to enter God's kingdom."
23 After Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each congregation, they prayed with fasting and entrusted them to the Lord in whom they had placed their faith.
24 They travelled through Pisidia and arrived in Pamphylia.
25 After proclaiming the message in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
26 From there they sailed back to Antioch, where they had originally been commended to God's grace for the work they had now finished.
27 Upon their arrival, they assembled the congregation and gave a full report of everything God had accomplished through them, and how He had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.
28 They remained there with the disciples for a considerable time.
