Psalms 9
9
Thanksgiving for Victory and Prayer for Justice
1For the leader; according to Muth Labben.#Muth Labben: probably the melodic accompaniment of the Psalm, now lost. A psalm of David.
I
2I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;
I will declare all your wondrous deeds.
3I will delight and rejoice in you;
I will sing hymns to your name, Most High.
4When my enemies turn back,
they stumble and perish before you.
II
5For you upheld my right and my cause,
seated on your throne, judging justly.
6You rebuked the nations, you destroyed the wicked;
their name you blotted out for all time.#Jb 18:17.
7The enemies have been ruined forever;
you destroyed their cities;
their memory has perished.
III
8The Lord rules forever,
has set up his throne for judgment.
9It is he who judges the world with justice,#Ps 96:10; 98:9.
who judges the peoples with fairness.
10The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.#Ps 37:39; Is 25:4.
11Those who know your name trust in you;
you never forsake those who seek you, Lord.
IV
12Sing hymns to the Lord enthroned on Zion;
proclaim his deeds among the nations!
13For the avenger of bloodshed remembers,
does not forget the cry of the afflicted.#Jb 16:18.
V
14Be gracious to me, Lord;
see how my foes afflict me!
You alone can raise me from the gates of death.#Wis 16:13.
15Then I will declare all your praises,
sing joyously of your salvation
in the gates of daughter Zion.#Daughter Zion: an ancient Near Eastern city could sometimes be personified as a woman or a queen, the spouse of the god of the city.
VI
16The nations fall into the pit they dig;
in the snare they hide, their own foot is caught.
17#The Lord is revealed in making judgments: God has so made the universe that the wicked are punished by the very actions they perform. Selah: see note on Ps 3:3.The Lord is revealed in making judgments:
by the deeds they do the wicked are trapped.#Ps 35:8; Sir 27:26.
Higgaion. Selah#The Lord is revealed in making judgments: God has so made the universe that the wicked are punished by the very actions they perform. Selah: see note on Ps 3:3.
VII
18To Sheol the wicked will depart,
all the nations that forget God.
19For the needy will never be forgotten,
nor will the hope of the afflicted ever fade.#Prv 23:18.
20Arise, Lord, let no mortal prevail;
let the nations be judged in your presence.
21Strike them with terror, Lord;
show the nations they are only human.
Selah

Psalm 9
For the choir director; according to muth labben; #9:0 Or “almuth labben”; unknown musical term. a psalm by David.#9:0 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Greek, and Latin treat Psalms 9 and 10 as one psalm.
1I will give ⌞you⌟ thanks, O Lord, with all my heart.
I will tell about all the miracles you have done.
2I will find joy and be glad about you.
I will make music to praise your name, O Most High.
3When my enemies retreat, they will stumble and die in your presence.
4You have defended my just cause:
You sat down on your throne as a fair judge.
5You condemned nations.
You destroyed wicked people.
You wiped out their names forever and ever.
6The enemy is finished—in ruins forever.
You have uprooted their cities.
Even the memory of them has faded.
7Yet, the Lord is enthroned forever.
He has set up his throne for judgment.
8He alone judges the world with righteousness.
He judges ⌞its⌟ people fairly.
9The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
10Those who know your name trust you, O Lord,
because you have never deserted those who seek your help.
11Make music to praise the Lord, who is enthroned in Zion.
Announce to the nations what he has done.
12The one who avenges murder has remembered oppressed people.
He has never forgotten their cries.
13Have pity on me, O Lord.
Look at what I suffer because of those who hate me.
You take me away from the gates of death
14so that I may recite your praises one by one
in the gates of Zion
and find joy in your salvation.
15The nations have sunk into the pit they have made.
Their feet are caught in the net they have hidden ⌞to trap others⌟.
16The Lord is known by the judgment he has carried out.
The wicked person is trapped
by the work of his own hands. Higgaion Selah
17Wicked people, all the nations who forget God,
will return to the grave.
18Needy people will not always be forgotten.
Nor will the hope of oppressed people be lost forever.
19Arise, O Lord.
Do not let mortals gain any power.
Let the nations be judged in your presence.
20Strike them with terror, O Lord.
Let the nations know that they are ⌞only⌟ mortal. Selah
