Psalms 75
75
God the Judge of the World
1For the leader. Do not destroy! A psalm of Asaph; a song.
I
2We thank you, God, we give thanks;
we call upon your name,
we declare your wonderful deeds.
[You said:]#You said: supplied for clarity here and in Ps 75:11. The translation assumes in both places that the psalmist is citing an oracle of God.
3“I will choose the time;
I will judge fairly.
4Though the earth and all its inhabitants quake,
I make steady its pillars.”#Ps 46:3; 60:4; 93:1; 96:10; 104:5; 1 Sm 2:8; Is 24:19.

5So I say to the boastful: “Do not boast!”#1 Sm 2:3; Zec 2:1–4.
to the wicked: “Do not raise your horns!#Do not raise your horns!: the horn is the symbol of strength; to raise one’s horn is to exalt one’s own power as Ps 75:5 explains.
6Do not raise your horns against heaven!
Do not speak with a stiff neck!”#Jb 15:25.
7For judgment comes not from east or from west,
not from the wilderness or the mountains,#Mt 24:23–27.
8But from God who decides,
who brings some low and raises others high.#Jb 5:11; 1 Sm 2:7.
9Yes, a cup#A cup: “the cup of God’s wrath” is the punishment inflicted on the wicked, cf. Is 51:17; Jer 25:15–29; 49:12; Ez 23:31–33. Spiced: lit., “a mixed drink”; spices or drugs were added to wine, cf. Prv 9:2, 5. is in the Lord’s hand,
foaming wine, fully spiced.#A cup: “the cup of God’s wrath” is the punishment inflicted on the wicked, cf. Is 51:17; Jer 25:15–29; 49:12; Ez 23:31–33. Spiced: lit., “a mixed drink”; spices or drugs were added to wine, cf. Prv 9:2, 5.
When God pours it out,
they will drain it even to the dregs;
all the wicked of the earth will drink.#Ps 60:5; Jb 21:20; Is 51:17, 21–22; Jer 25:15ff; Hab 2:16.
10But I will rejoice forever;
I will sing praise to the God of Jacob,
11#Ps 92:11.[Who has said:]
“I will cut off all the horns of the wicked,
but the horns of the righteous will be exalted.”

(A psalm and a song by Asaph for the music leader. To the tune “Don't Destroy.”#Psalm 75 Don't Destroy: See the note at Psalm 57.)
Praise God for All He Has Done
1Our God, we thank you
for being so near to us!
Everyone celebrates
your wonderful deeds.
2You have set a time
to judge with fairness.
3The earth trembles,
and its people shake;
you alone keep
its foundations firm.
4You tell every bragger,
“Stop bragging!”
And to the wicked you say,
“Don't boast of your power!
5Stop bragging! Quit telling me
how great you are.”
6Our Lord and our God,
victory doesn't come
from the east or the west
or from the desert.
7You are the one who judges.
You can take away power
and give it to others.
8You hold in your hand
a cup filled with wine,#75.8 a cup … wine: In the Old Testament “a cup filled with wine” sometimes stands for God's anger.
strong and foaming.
You will pour out some
for every sinful person
on this earth,
and they will have to drink
until it is gone.
9But I will always tell about
you, the God of Jacob,
and I will sing your praise.
10Our Lord, you will destroy
the power of evil people,
but you will give strength
to those who are good.
