2Have mercy on me, God,
for I am treated harshly;
attackers press me all the day.
3My foes treat me harshly all the day;
yes, many are my attackers.
O Most High, 4when I am afraid,
in you I place my trust.
5I praise the word of God;
I trust in God, I do not fear.#Ps 130:5.
What can mere flesh do to me?#Ps 118:6; Heb 13:6.

6All the day they foil my plans;
their every thought is of evil against me.
7They hide together in ambush;
they watch my every step;
they lie in wait for my life.#Ps 140:5–6.
8They are evil; watch them, God!
Cast the nations down in your anger!
9My wanderings you have noted;
are my tears not stored in your flask,#Are my tears not stored in your flask: a unique saying in the Old Testament. The context suggests that the tears are saved because they are precious; God puts a high value on each of the psalmist’s troubles.

10My foes turn back when I call on you.
This I know: God is on my side.
11I praise the word of God,
I praise the word of the Lord.
12In God I trust, I do not fear.

kept my feet from stumbling,
That I may walk before God
in the light of the living.

A Prayer of Trust in God#Ps 56 Hebrew title: A psalm by David, after the Philistines captured him in Gath.#1 Sam 21.13–15
1Be merciful to me, O God,
because I am under attack;
my enemies persecute me all the time.
2All day long my opponents attack me.
There are so many who fight against me.
3When I am afraid, O LORD Almighty,
I put my trust in you.
4I trust in God and am not afraid;
I praise him for what he has promised.
What can a mere human being do to me?
5My enemies make trouble for me all day long;
they are always planning how to hurt me!
6They gather in hiding places
and watch everything I do,
hoping to kill me.
7Punish#56.7 Probable text Punish; Hebrew Save. them, O God, for their evil;
defeat those people in your anger!
8You know how troubled I am;
you have kept a record of my tears.
Aren't they listed in your book?
9The day I call to you,
my enemies will be turned back.
I know this: God#56.9 I know this: God; or Because I know that God. is on my side —
10the LORD, whose promises I praise.
11In him I trust, and I will not be afraid.
What can a mere human being do to me?
12O God, I will offer you what I have promised;
I will give you my offering of thanksgiving,
13because you have rescued me from death
and kept me from defeat.
And so I walk in the presence of God,
in the light that shines on the living.
