The Deceitful Tongue
1For the leader. A maskil of David, 2when Doeg the Edomite entered and reported to Saul, saying to him: “David has entered the house of Ahimelech.”#1 Sm 21:8; 22:6ff.

3Why do you glory in what is evil, you who are mighty by the mercy of God?
All day long
4you are thinking up intrigues;
your tongue is like a sharpened razor,
you worker of deceit.#Ps 12:3; 59:8; 120:2–3; Sir 51:3.
5You love evil more than good,
lying rather than saying what is right.#Jer 4:22; Jn 3:19–20.

6You love all the words that create confusion,
you deceitful tongue.#Jer 9:4.

7God too will strike you down forever,
he will lay hold of you and pluck you from your tent,
uproot you from the land of the living.#Ps 27:13; 28:5; 56:14; Jb 18:14; Prv 2:22; Is 38:11.

8The righteous will see and they will fear;
but they will laugh at him:#Ps 44:14; 64:9.
9“Behold the man! He did not take God as his refuge,
but he trusted in the abundance of his wealth,
and grew powerful through his wickedness.”#Jb 31:24; Prv 11:28.

10But I, like an olive tree#Like an olive tree: the righteous will flourish in the house of God like a well-watered olive tree, cf. Ps 92:14; 128:3. flourishing in the house of God,#Ps 1:3; 92:12–14; Jer 11:16; 17:8.
I trust in God’s mercy forever and ever.
11I will thank you forever
for what you have done.
I will put my hope in your name—for it is good,#Ps 22:23; 26:12; 35:18; 149:1.
—in the presence of those devoted to you.

The Steadfast Love of God Endures
To the choirmaster. A Maskil#52:1 Probably a musical or liturgical term of David, when #1 Sam. 22:9Doeg, the Edomite, came and told Saul, “David has come to the house of Ahimelech.”
1Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man?
The steadfast love of God endures all the day.
2Your #Ps. 50:19 tongue plots destruction,
like #[Ps. 57:4] a sharp razor, you #Ps. 101:7worker of deceit.
3You love evil more than good,
and #[Jer. 9:4, 5]lying more than speaking what is right. Selah
4You love all words that devour,
O deceitful tongue.
5But God will break you down forever;
he will snatch and #Prov. 2:22 tear you from your tent;
he will uproot you from #See Ps. 27:13the land of the living. Selah
6The righteous shall #See Ps. 40:3 see and fear,
and shall #See Ps. 2:4laugh at him, saying,
7“See the man who would not make
God his refuge,
but #See Ps. 49:6trusted in the abundance of his riches
and sought refuge in his own destruction!”#52:7 Or in his work of destruction
8But I am like #Jer. 11:16; [Ps. 1:3; 37:35; 92:12, 13; 128:3; 144:12; Hos. 14:6]a green olive tree
in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
forever and ever.
9I will thank you forever,
because you have done it.
I will wait for your name, #Ps. 54:6 for it is good,
in the presence of the #See Ps. 50:5godly.
