Gratitude and Prayer for Help
1For the leader. A psalm of David.
A
2Surely, I wait for the Lord;
who bends down to me and hears my cry,#Lam 3:25.
3Draws me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the muddy clay,#Ps 28:1; 30:4; 69:3, 15–16; 88:5; Prv 1:12; Jon 2:7.
Sets my feet upon rock,
steadies my steps,
4And puts a new song#A new song: a song in response to the new action of God (cf. Ps 33:3; 96:1; 144:9; 149:1; Is 42:10). Giving thanks is not purely a human response but is itself a divine gift. in my mouth,#Ps 33:3.
a hymn to our God.
Many shall look on in fear
and they shall trust in the Lord.
5Blessed the man who sets
his security in the Lord,
who turns not to the arrogant
or to those who stray after falsehood.#Ps 1:1; Prv 16:20; Jer 17:7.
6You, yes you, O Lord, my God,
have done many wondrous deeds!
And in your plans for us
there is none to equal you.#Ps 35:10.
Should I wish to declare or tell them,
too many are they to recount.#Ps 71:15; 139:17–18.
7#Obedience is better than sacrifice (cf. 1 Sm 15:22; Is 1:10–20; Hos 6:6; Am 5:22–25; Mi 6:6–8; Acts 7:42–43 [quoting Am 5:25–26]). Heb 10:5–9 quotes the somewhat different Greek version and interprets it as Christ’s self-oblation.Sacrifice and offering you do not want;#Heb 10:5–7; Ps 51:18–19; Am 5:22; Hos 6:6; Is 1:11–15.
you opened my ears.
Holocaust and sin-offering you do not request;
8so I said, “See; I come
with an inscribed scroll written upon me.
9I delight to do your will, my God;
your law is in my inner being!”#Ps 37:31.
10When I sing of your righteousness
in a great assembly,
See, I do not restrain my lips;
as you, Lord, know.#Ps 22:23; 26:12; 35:18; 149:1.
11I do not conceal your righteousness
within my heart;
I speak of your loyalty and your salvation.
I do not hide your mercy or faithfulness from a great assembly.
12Lord, may you not withhold
your compassion from me;
May your mercy and your faithfulness
continually protect me.#Ps 89:34.

13But evils surround me
until they cannot be counted.
My sins overtake me,
so that I can no longer see.
They are more numerous than the hairs of my head;
my courage fails me.#Ps 38:5, 11; Ezr 9:6.
14Lord, graciously rescue me!#Ps 70:2–6; 71:12.
Come quickly to help me, Lord!
15May those who seek to destroy my life
be shamed and confounded.
Turn back in disgrace
those who desire my ruin.#Ps 35:4, 26.
16Let those who say to me “Aha!”#Ps 35:21, 25.
Be made desolate on account of their shame.
17While those who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you.
May those who long for your salvation
always say, “The Lord is great.”#Ps 35:27.
18Though I am afflicted and poor,
my Lord keeps me in mind.
You are my help and deliverer;
my God, do not delay!

My Help and My Deliverer
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
1I #Ps. 27:14; 37:7 waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and #Ps. 39:12heard my cry.
2He drew me up from #[Jer. 38:6] the pit of destruction,
out of #Ps. 69:2, 14 the miry bog,
and #Ps. 27:5 set my feet upon a rock,
#
Ps. 37:23
making my steps secure.
3He put #See Ps. 33:3 a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will #Ps. 52:6; 64:8, 9; Deut. 13:11see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.
4Blessed is the man who #See Ps. 2:12 makes
the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
to those who #Ps. 101:3; 125:5; Lev. 19:4; Deut. 29:18; Job 23:11; Hos. 3:1go astray after a lie!
5You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
your #Ps. 9:1; Ex. 15:11 wondrous deeds and your #Ps. 92:5; 139:17; Isa. 55:8 thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them,
yet they are #Ps. 71:15; 139:18more than can be told.
6 #
Ps. 51:16; 1 Sam. 15:22; Cited Heb. 10:5-7; See Prov. 21:3 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
but you have given me an open #See Job 33:16ear.#40:6 Hebrew ears you have dug for me

you have not required.
7Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
in the scroll of the book it is written #Luke 24:44of me:

Ps. 119:16, 24, 35, 92; [John 4:34] I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is #See Ps. 37:31within my heart.”
9I have told the glad news of deliverance#40:9 Hebrew righteousness; also verse 10
in #See Ps. 22:25 the great congregation;
behold, I have not #Ps. 119:13; [Acts 20:20, 27] restrained my lips,
#

as you know, O Lord.
10I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
from the great congregation.
11As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain
your mercy from me;
your #Ps. 57:3; 61:7; Prov. 20:28; See Ps. 36:5steadfast love and your faithfulness will
ever preserve me!
12For evils have #Ps. 116:3 encompassed me
beyond number;
my #Ps. 38:4 iniquities have overtaken me,
and I cannot #[Ps. 38:10] see;
they are #Ps. 69:4 more than the hairs of my head;
my heart #Ps. 73:26fails me.
13 # For ver. 13-17, see Ps. 70:1-5 Be pleased, O Lord, to #Ps. 22:20 deliver me!
O Lord, #Ps. 22:19; 38:22; 71:12; 141:1make haste to help me!
14 #
Ps. 35:4, 26; 71:13 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether
who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be #Ps. 6:10turned back and brought to dishonor
who delight in my hurt!
15Let those be appalled because of their shame
who #Ps. 35:21, 25; 70:3say to me, “Aha, Aha!”
16But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation
#
Ps. 35:27
say continually, “Great is the Lord!”
17As for me, I am #Ps. 86:1; 109:22 poor and needy,
but #[1 Pet. 5:7]the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
do not delay, O my God!
