Psalms 107

God the Savior of Those in Distress
1“Give thanks to the Lord for he is good,
his mercy endures forever!”#Ps 100:4–5; 106:1; Jer 33:11.
2Let that be the prayer of the Lord’s redeemed,
those redeemed from the hand of the foe,#Is 63:12.
3Those gathered from foreign lands,
from east and west, from north and south.#Is 43:5–6; 49:12; Zec 8:7.
I
4Some had lost their way in a barren desert;
found no path toward a city to live in.
5They were hungry and thirsty;
their life was ebbing away.#Dt 8:15; 32:10; Is 49:10.
6In their distress they cried to the Lord,
who rescued them in their peril,
7#Is 35:8; 40:3; 43:19.Guided them by a direct path
so they reached a city to live in.#Dt 6:10.
8Let them thank the Lord for his mercy,
such wondrous deeds for the children of Adam.
9For he satisfied the thirsty,
filled the hungry with good things.#Lk 1:53.
II
10Some lived in darkness and gloom,
imprisoned in misery and chains.
11Because they rebelled against God’s word,
and scorned the counsel of the Most High,#Is 42:7, 22; Jb 36:8–9; Prv 1:25.
12He humbled their hearts through hardship;
they stumbled with no one to help.#Ps 106:43.
13In their distress they cried to the Lord,
who saved them in their peril;
14He brought them forth from darkness and the shadow of death
and broke their chains asunder.#Is 42:7; 49:9; 51:14.
15Let them thank the Lord for his mercy,
such wondrous deeds for the children of Adam.
16For he broke down the gates of bronze
and snapped the bars of iron.
III
17Some fell sick from their wicked ways,
afflicted because of their sins.
18They loathed all manner of food;#Jb 6:6–7; 33:20.
they were at the gates of death.
19In their distress they cried to the Lord,
who saved them in their peril,
20Sent forth his word to heal them,#Ps 147:15; Wis 16:12; Is 55:11; Mt 8:8.
and snatched them from the grave.
21Let them thank the Lord for his mercy,
such wondrous deeds for the children of Adam.
22Let them offer a sacrifice in thanks,
recount his works with shouts of joy.
IV
23Some went off to sea in ships,
plied their trade on the deep waters.#Sir 43:25.
24They saw the works of the Lord,
the wonders of God in the deep.
25He commanded and roused a storm wind;
it tossed the waves on high.#Jon 1:4.
26They rose up to the heavens, sank to the depths;
their hearts trembled at the danger.
27They reeled, staggered like drunkards;
their skill was of no avail.#Is 29:9.
28In their distress they cried to the Lord,
who brought them out of their peril;
29He hushed the storm to silence,
the waves of the sea were stilled.#Ps 65:8; 89:10; Mt 8:26 par.
30They rejoiced that the sea grew calm,
that God brought them to the harbor they longed for.
31Let them thank the Lord for his mercy,
such wondrous deeds for the children of Adam.
32Let them extol him in the assembly of the people,
and praise him in the council of the elders.

33#God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah in Gn 18–19, which the Psalm sees as the destruction of the wicked inhabitants of Canaan to prepare the way for Israel (Ps 107:33–34). God then led Israel through the desert to give them a fertile land (Ps 107:35–38) and protected them from every danger (Ps 107:39–41).God changed rivers into desert,
springs of water into thirsty ground,#Is 35:7; 42:15; 50:2.
34Fruitful land into a salty waste,
because of the wickedness of its people.#Gn 19:23–28; Dt 29:22; Sir 39:23.
35He changed the desert into pools of water,
arid land into springs of water,#Ps 114:8; Is 41:8.
36And settled the hungry there;
they built a city to live in.#Ez 36:35.
37They sowed fields and planted vineyards,
brought in an abundant harvest.#Is 65:21; Jer 31:5.
38#Jb 12:23–25.God blessed them, and they increased greatly,
and their livestock did not decrease.#Dt 7:13–14.
39But he poured out contempt on princes,
made them wander trackless wastes,
40Where they were diminished and brought low
through misery and cruel oppression.
41While he released the poor man from affliction,
and increased their families like flocks.#Ps 113:7.
42The upright saw this and rejoiced;#Ps 58:11; 63:12.
all wickedness shut its mouth.
43Whoever is wise will take note of these things,#Hos 14:10.
and ponder the merciful deeds of the Lord.

Psalms 107—150
In Praise of God's Goodness
1 #
1 Chr 16.34; 2 Chr 5.13; 7.3; Ezra 3.11; Ps 100.5; 106.1; 118.1; 136.1; Jer 33.11 “Give thanks to the LORD, because he is good;
his love is eternal!”
2Repeat these words in praise to the LORD,
all you whom he has saved.
He has rescued you from your enemies
3and has brought you back from foreign countries,
from east and west, from north and south.#107.3 Probable text south; Hebrew the Mediterranean Sea (meaning “west”).
4Some wandered in the trackless desert
and could not find their way to a city to live in.
5They were hungry and thirsty
and had given up all hope.
6Then in their trouble they called to the LORD,
and he saved them from their distress.
7He led them by a straight road
to a city where they could live.
8They must thank the LORD for his constant love,
for the wonderful things he did for them.
9He satisfies those who are thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.
10Some were living in gloom and darkness,
prisoners suffering in chains,
11because they had rebelled against the commands of Almighty God
and had rejected his instructions.
12They were worn out from hard work;
they would fall down, and no one would help.
13Then in their trouble they called to the LORD,
and he saved them from their distress.
14He brought them out of their gloom and darkness
and broke their chains in pieces.
15They must thank the LORD for his constant love,
for the wonderful things he did for them.
16He breaks down doors of bronze
and smashes iron bars.
17Some were fools, suffering because of their sins
and because of their evil;
18they couldn't stand the sight of food
and were close to death.
19Then in their trouble they called to the LORD,
and he saved them from their distress.
20He healed them with his command
and saved them from the grave.
21They must thank the LORD for his constant love,
for the wonderful things he did for them.
22They must thank him with sacrifices,
and with songs of joy must tell all that he has done.
23Some sailed over the ocean in ships,
earning their living on the seas.
24They saw what the LORD can do,
his wonderful acts on the seas.
25He commanded, and a mighty wind began to blow
and stirred up the waves.
26The ships were lifted high in the air
and plunged down into the depths.
In such danger the sailors lost their courage;
27they stumbled and staggered like drunken men —
all their skill was useless.
28Then in their trouble they called to the LORD,
and he saved them from their distress.
29He calmed the raging storm,
and the waves became quiet.
30They were glad because of the calm,
and he brought them safe to the port they wanted.
31They must thank the LORD for his constant love,
for the wonderful things he did for them.
32They must proclaim his greatness in the assembly of the people
and praise him before the council of the leaders.
33The LORD made rivers dry up completely
and stopped springs from flowing.
34He made rich soil become a salty wilderness
because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
35He changed deserts into pools of water
and dry land into flowing springs.
36He let hungry people settle there,
and they built a city to live in.
37They sowed the fields and planted grapevines
and reaped an abundant harvest.
38He blessed his people, and they had many children;
he kept their herds of cattle from decreasing.
39When God's people were defeated and humiliated
by cruel oppression and suffering,
40he showed contempt for their oppressors
and made them wander in trackless deserts.
41But he rescued the needy from their misery
and made their families increase like flocks.
42The righteous see this and are glad,
but all the wicked are put to silence.
43May those who are wise think about these things;
may they consider the LORD's constant love.
