Joshua 23

Joshua’s Final Plea. 1Many years later, after the Lord had given the Israelites rest from all their enemies round about them, and when Joshua was old and advanced in years,#Jos 13:1. 2he summoned all Israel, including their elders, leaders, judges, and officers, and said to them: “I am old and advanced in years.#Dt 29:10. 3You have seen all that the Lord, your God, has done for you against all these nations; for it has been the Lord, your God, who fought for you. 4#Jos 13:2–7; 14:2; 18:10; Ps 78:55. See, I have apportioned among your tribes as their heritage the nations that survive, as well as those I destroyed, between the Jordan and the Great Sea in the west. 5The Lord, your God, will drive them out and dispossess them at your approach, so that you will take possession of their land as the Lord, your God, promised you. 6Therefore be strong and be careful to observe all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, never turning from it right or left,#Jos 1:7. 7or mingling with these nations that survive among you. You must not invoke their gods by name, or swear by them, or serve them, or bow down to them,#Ex 20:3–6; Dt 5:7–10; 7:2–11. 8but you must hold fast to the Lord, your God, as you have done up to this day. 9At your approach the Lord has dispossessed great and strong nations; not one has withstood you up to this day. 10One of you puts to flight a thousand, because it is the Lord, your God, himself who fights for you,#Ex 14:14; Lv 26:8; Dt 3:22. as he promised you. 11As for you, take great care to love the Lord, your God. 12For if you ever turn away from him and join with the remnant of these nations that survive among you, by intermarrying and intermingling with them,#Ex 34:16; Dt 7:3. 13know for certain that the Lord, your God, will no longer dispossess these nations at your approach. Instead they will be a snare and a trap for you, a scourge for your sides and thorns for your eyes, until you perish from this good land which the Lord, your God, has given you.#Nm 33:55.
14“Today, as you see, I am going the way of all the earth.#Going the way of all the earth: drawing near to death, the inevitable end of all; cf. 1 Kgs 2:1–2. So now acknowledge with your whole heart and soul that not one of all the promises the Lord, your God, made concerning you has failed. Every one has come true for you; not one has failed. 15#Lv 26:14–39; Dt 28:15–68. But just as every promise the Lord, your God, made to you has come true for you, so will he bring upon you every threat,#Every threat: mentioned especially in the list of curses in Dt 28:15–68. even so far as to exterminate you from this good land which the Lord, your God, has given you. 16If you transgress the covenant of the Lord, your God, which he enjoined on you, to go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the anger of the Lord will flare up against you and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you.”

Joshua’s Farewell Address
1And it happened, after a long time,#Literally “many days” after Yahweh had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and after Joshua was old and well-advanced in years,#Literally “he went into the days” 2Joshua summoned all Israel, their elders, heads, judges, and officials, and he said to them, “I am old and well-advanced in years,#Literally “I went into the days” 3and you have seen all that Yahweh your God has done to all these nations for your sake,#Literally “because of your presence” for Yahweh your God is fighting for you. 4Look! I have allotted to you these remaining nations as an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, to the Great Sea#That is, the Mediterranean in the west.#Literally “to the setting of the sun” 5And Yahweh your God will push them back before you#Literally “from your presence” and drive them out of your sight,#Literally “from your face” and you will possess their land, just as Yahweh your God promised to you. 6Be very strong to observe carefully all that is written in the scroll of the law of Moses so as not to turn aside from it, to the right or left, 7so as not to go among these remaining nations with you; do not profess#Literally “do not mention” the name of their gods, and do not swear by them, serve them, or bow down to them.#Literally “bow yourselves down to them” 8But hold fast to Yahweh your God, just as you have done up to this day. 9Yahweh has driven out before you great and strong nations; and as for you, nobody has withstood#Literally “a man has not stood in your presence” you to this day. 10One of your men put to flight a thousand, for Yahweh your God is fighting for you, just as he promised you. 11Take utmost care for the sake of your life to love Yahweh your God, 12for if indeed you turn back and join these remaining nations among you,#Literally “with you” and you intermarry with them, marrying their women and they yours,#Literally “you go into them and they into you” 13know for certain that Yahweh your God will not continue to drive out#Literally “will not drive out again” these nations from before you; they will be for you a snare and a trap, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that Yahweh your God has given to you.
14Look! I am about to die,#Literally “I am going today on the way of all the earth” and you know in all your hearts#Hebrew “heart” and souls#Hebrew “soul”; or “inner self” that not one thing failed#Literally “fell” from all the good things that Yahweh your God promised concerning you; everything has been fulfilled;#Literally “has come out” not one thing failed.#Literally “not one thing fell from it” 15But just as all the good things#Hebrew “thing” came to you that Yahweh your God promised, so will Yahweh bring to you all the bad things#Hebrew “things” until he has destroyed you from this good land that Yahweh your God has given to you. 16If you transgress the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he commanded to you, and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, Yahweh’s anger will be kindled#Literally “Yahweh’s nose will become hot” against you, and you will perish quickly from the good land that he has given to you.”
