Jonah 1

Jonah’s Disobedience and Flight. 1The word of the Lord came to Jonah,#2 Kgs 14:25. son of Amittai:#Jonah, son of Amittai: a prophet of this name lived at the time of Jeroboam II (786–746 B.C.). 2Set out for the great city#Great city: exaggeration is characteristic of this book; the word “great” (Heb. gadol) occurs fourteen times. of Nineveh, and preach against it; for their wickedness has come before me.#Jon 3:3; 4:11. 3But Jonah made ready to flee to Tarshish,#Tarshish: identified by many with Tartessus, an ancient Phoenician colony in southwest Spain; precise identification with any particular Phoenician center in the western Mediterranean is uncertain. To the Israelites it stood for the far west. away from the Lord. He went down to Joppa, found a ship going to Tarshish, paid the fare, and went down in it to go with them to Tarshish, away from the Lord.
4#Mk 4:37–38.The Lord, however, hurled a great wind upon the sea, and the storm was so great that the ship was about to break up. 5Then the sailors were afraid and each one cried to his god. To lighten the ship for themselves, they threw its cargo into the sea. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship, and lay there fast asleep. 6The captain approached him and said, “What are you doing asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps this god will be mindful of us so that we will not perish.”
7Then they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots to discover on whose account this evil has come to us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.#Jos 7:16–18; 1 Sm 14:40–42. 8They said to him, “Tell us why this evil has come to us! What is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country, and to what people do you belong?” 9“I am a Hebrew,” he replied; “I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10Now the men were seized with great fear and said to him, “How could you do such a thing!”—They knew that he was fleeing from the Lord, because he had told them. 11They asked, “What shall we do with you, that the sea may calm down for us?” For the sea was growing more and more stormy. 12Jonah responded, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea and then the sea will calm down for you. For I know that this great storm has come upon you because of me.”
13Still the men rowed hard to return to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy. 14Then they cried to the Lord: “Please, O Lord, do not let us perish for taking this man’s life; do not charge us with shedding innocent blood, for you, Lord, have accomplished what you desired.”#Aware that this disaster is a divine punishment on Jonah, the sailors ask that in ridding themselves of him they not be charged with the crime of murder. 15Then they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea stopped raging. 16Seized with great fear of the Lord, the men offered sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

Jonah Runs From His Mission
1Now the word of Adonai came to Jonah, son of Amittai, saying:
2“Rise, go to the great city Nineveh and call out to her, for their evil has risen before me.”
3But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish, from the presence of Adonai. He went down to Jaffa and found a ship going to Tarshish, paid the fee and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish—away from the presence of Adonai.
4Then Adonai hurled a forceful wind into the sea and there was such a mighty storm on the sea that the ship was about to shatter.
5So the sailors were afraid and cried out, each man to his own god. Then they cast the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest part of the ship, to lay down and fell fast asleep.
6So the chief sailor came near to him and said to him, “What, are you sleeping? Get up! Call out to your god. Perhaps the gods will consider us, so we will not perish!”
7Then each man said to his companion, “Come, let’s cast lots—so we may know because of whom this evil is happening to us.” So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
8Then they said to him, “Tell us, now! On whose account is this evil happening to us? What is your profession and where did you come from? What is your land and from what nation are you?”
9He said to them, “I am a Hebrew and I fear Adonai God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10Then the men became afraid with an overwhelming fear and they said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he had fled from the presence of Adonai, because he had told them.
11So they said to him, “What should we do to you so the sea will become calm for us?”—for the storm was raging on.
12“Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he said to them, “then the sea will become calm for you. For I know it is because of me that this great storm is upon you.”
13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to the land, but they could not, because the sea kept raging against them.
14So they cried to Adonai and said, “Please, Adonai, don’t let us perish on account of the soul of this man and don’t put innocent blood on us. For you, Adonai, have done as you pleased.”
15So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea—and the sea stilled from its raging.
16Then the men became afraid with an overwhelming fear of Adonai, and they offered a sacrifice to Adonai and made vows.
