Jeremiah 49

Against the Ammonites. 1Concerning the Ammonites. Thus says the Lord:
Has Israel no sons?
none to inherit?
Why has Milcom#Milcom: chief god of the Ammonites (cf. 1 Kgs 11:5). The Ammonites shared a border with Gad, an Israelite tribe in Transjordan (Jos 13:8–10); the Ammonites occupied its territory after the collapse of the Northern Kingdom. disinherited Gad,
why are his people living in its cities?
2Therefore the days are coming—oracle of the Lord—
when I will sound the battle alarm
against Rabbah of the Ammonites;
It shall become a mound of ruins,
and its villages destroyed by fire.
Israel shall then inherit those who disinherited it—
oracle of the Lord.#Am 1:14.
3Wail, Heshbon, “The ruin is destroyed!”
shriek, villages of Rabbah!
Put on sackcloth and lament!
Run back and forth in the sheepfolds.
For Milcom is going into exile,
taking priest and prince with him.#Is 15:2–5.
4Why boast in your strength,
your ebbing strength, rebellious daughter?
Why trust in your treasures, saying,
“Who would dare attack me?”
5See, I am bringing terror upon you—
oracle of the Lord God of hosts—
from all around you;
You shall be scattered, each in headlong flight,
with no one to gather the fugitives.#Jer 48:47.
6But afterward I will restore the fortunes
of the Ammonites—oracle of the Lord.
Against Edom.#Edom: southeast of the Dead Sea, a traditional enemy who profited from Judah’s downfall; cf. Ps 137:7; Lam 4:21–22; Ob 11–12. 7Concerning Edom. Thus says the Lord of hosts:
Is there no more wisdom in Teman,#Teman, a district of Edom (cf. Jb 2:11), represents the whole country, which was famous for the wisdom of its sages.
has counsel perished from the prudent,
is their wisdom gone?
8Flee, retreat, hide deep for lodging,
inhabitants of Dedan:
For I bring disaster upon Esau#Esau: Jacob’s brother, the traditional ancestor of the Edomites; cf. Gn 36:1.
when I come to punish them.#Ez 25:13.
9If vintagers came upon you,
they would leave no gleanings;
If thieves by night,
they would destroy as they pleased.#Ob 5.
10So I myself will strip Esau;
I will uncover his lairs so he cannot hide.
Offspring and family are destroyed,
neighbors, too; he is no more.#Mal 1:3.
11Leave your orphans behind, I will keep them alive;
your widows, let them trust in me.#Dt 10:18; Ps 68:6.
12For thus says the Lord: Look, even those not sentenced to drink the cup must drink it! Shall you then go unpunished? You shall not! You shall drink every bit of it!#Jer 25:15, 28; Lam 4:21–22. 13By myself I have sworn—oracle of the Lord—Bozrah#Bozrah: capital of Edom. shall become an object of horror, a disgrace, a desolation, and a curse. Bozrah and all its cities shall become ruins forever.#Is 34:6; Ez 35:3–9; Ob 16.
14I have heard a report from the Lord,
a herald has been sent among the nations:
“Gather together, move against it,
get ready for battle!”
15I will make you the least among the nations,
despised by all people!#Ob 2.
16The terror you spread,
the pride of your heart, beguiled you.
You denizens of rocks and crevices,
occupying towering peaks:
Though you build your nest high as the eagle,
from there I will bring you down—oracle of the Lord.#Jer 48:29–30.
17Edom shall become an object of horror. Passersby recoil in terror, hissing at all its wounds. 18As when Sodom, Gomorrah, and their neighbors were overthrown—oracle of the Lord—no one shall live in it, nor anyone settle there.#Jer 50:40; Dt 29:23.
19As when a lion comes up from a thicket of the Jordan
to a permanent pasture,
So in an instant, I will chase them off;
I will establish there whomever I choose.
For who is like me? Who holds me accountable?
What shepherd can stand against me?#Jer 12:5; 25:9; 50:44–45.
20Therefore, listen to the strategy
the Lord devised for Edom;
The plans he has drawn up
against the inhabitants of Teman:
They shall be dragged away, even the smallest of the flock;
their pasture shall be aghast because of them.
21With the din of their collapse the earth quakes,
to the Red Sea the outcry is heard!
22Look! like an eagle he soars aloft,
and spreads his wings over Bozrah;
On that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors become
like the heart of a woman in labor.#Jer 4:13.
Against Damascus. 23Concerning Damascus.
Hamath and Arpad#Hamath and Arpad: independent Aramean states north of Damascus, the direction from which the invasion is coming. Cf. Is 10:9–10. are shamed,
for they have heard bad news;
Anxious, they surge like the sea
which cannot calm down.#Is 36:19; 37:13.
24Damascus loses heart, turns to flee;
panic has seized it.
Distress and pangs take hold,
like the pain of a woman in labor.
25How can the glorious city be abandoned,
the town of joy!
26But now its young men shall fall in its squares,
all the warriors destroyed on that day—
oracle of the Lord of hosts.
27I will set fire to the wall of Damascus;
it shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad.#Ben-hadad: a dynastic name for some of the kings who ruled in Damascus; cf. 1 Kgs 15:18, 20.
Against Arabia. 28About Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, defeated.
Thus says the Lord:
Rise up, attack Kedar,
destroy the people from the east.#Is 21:16.
29Their tents and flocks shall be taken away,
their tent curtains and all their goods;
Their camels they carry off,
they shout over them, “Terror on every side!”#Jer 4:20.
30Flee! wander about, hide deep for lodging,
inhabitants of Hazor—oracle of the Lord;
For Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, has devised a strategy against you,
drawn up a plan against you,
31Get up! set out against a tranquil nation,
living in security—oracle of the Lord—
Without gates or bars,
dwelling alone.
32Their camels shall become spoils,
their hordes of cattle, plunder;
I will scatter to the winds those who shave their temples;
from every side I will bring their ruin—
oracle of the Lord.#Jer 9:25.
33Hazor shall become a haunt for jackals,
a wasteland forever,
Where no one lives,
no mortal stays.
Against Elam. 34The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam#Elam: an ancient kingdom east of Babylonia. at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah:
35Thus says the Lord of hosts:
Look! I will break the bow of Elam,
the mainstay of their might.
36I will bring upon Elam the four winds
from the four ends of the heavens:
I will scatter them to all these winds, until there is no nation
to which the outcasts of Elam have not gone.
37I will terrify Elam before their foes,
those seeking their life;
I will bring evil upon them,
my burning wrath—oracle of the Lord.
I will send sword after them
until I have finished them off;
38I will set up my throne in Elam
and destroy from there king and princes—
oracle of the Lord.
39But at the end of days I will restore
the fortunes of Elam—oracle of the Lord.

Judgment on Ammon
1 # ch. 25:21; [Ezek. 21:28; 25:2] Concerning the Ammonites.
Thus says the Lord:
“Has Israel no sons?
Has he no heir?
Why then has #[1 Kgs. 11:5, 33; 2 Kgs. 23:13] Milcom#49:1 Or their king; also verse 3 #[Amos 1:13]dispossessed Gad,
and his people settled in its cities?
2Therefore, behold, the days are coming,
declares the Lord,
when I will cause #ch. 4:19 the battle cry to be heard
against #Ezek. 21:20; 25:5; Amos 1:14 Rabbah of the Ammonites;
it shall become a desolate #ch. 30:18mound,
and its villages shall be burned with fire;
then Israel shall dispossess those who dispossessed him,
says the Lord.
3“Wail, O #ch. 48:2 Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste!
Cry out, O daughters of #[See ver. 2 above] Rabbah!
# ch. 48:37; See ch. 4:8 Put on sackcloth,
lament, and run to and fro among the hedges!
For #[1 Kgs. 11:5, 33; 2 Kgs. 23:13] Milcom shall go into exile,
# ch. 48:7 with his priests and his officials.
4Why do you boast of your valleys,#49:4 Hebrew boast of your valleys, your valley flows
# ch. 3:14 O faithless daughter,
# ch. 48:7 who trusted in her treasures, saying,
‘Who will come against me?’
5Behold, #[ch. 48:43]I will bring terror upon you,
declares the Lord God of hosts,
from all who are around you,
and you shall be driven out, every man straight before him,
with none to gather the fugitives.
6“But #[ver. 39; ch. 48:47]afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, declares the Lord.”
Judgment on Edom
7Concerning #ch. 25:21; Isa. 34:5; Amos 1:11; Obad. 1; [Mal. 1:2]; See Ezek. 25:12-14 Edom.
Thus says the Lord of hosts:
# ver. 20; Obad. 9 “Is wisdom no more in #ver. 20; Obad. 9 Teman?
# [Isa. 19:11, 12] Has counsel perished from the prudent?
# [Isa. 19:11, 12] Has their wisdom vanished?
8 # ver. 30 Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of #ch. 25:23; Gen. 25:3 Dedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
# ch. 50:27, 31; [ch. 46:21; 50:27] the time when I punish him.
9 #
Obad. 5, 6 If grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave #[Judg. 8:2]gleanings?
#
Obad. 5, 6 If thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 #
Mal. 1:3 But I have stripped Esau bare;
# [See ver. 9 above] I have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and #ch. 31:15; Isa. 17:14he is no more.
11 # [Ps. 10:14, 18; 68:5] Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
# [Ps. 10:14, 18; 68:5] and let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: #ch. 25:28; [Obad. 16] “If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, #ch. 25:29will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13#See ch. 22:5 For I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that #ver. 22; See ch. 48:24 Bozrah shall become #See ch. 24:9a horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”
14 # See Obad. 1-4 I have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
# [Isa. 13:4] “Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,#49:16 Or of Sela
who hold the height of the hill.
Though you #[ch. 48:28]make your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,
declares the Lord.
17 #
Ezek. 35:3, 7, 9 “Edom shall become a horror. #[ch. 50:13]Everyone who passes by it will be horrified #[ch. 50:13]and will hiss because of all its disasters. 18#See Isa. 13:19 As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their #[Deut. 29:23] neighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, #ver. 33no man shall dwell there, #ver. 33no man shall sojourn in her. 19#For ver. 19-21, see ch. 50:44-46 Behold, #See ch. 4:7 like a lion coming up from #See ch. 12:5 the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him#49:19 Septuagint, Syriac them run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. #See ch. 10:6 For who is like me? #Job 9:19 Who will summon me? #[ch. 30:21]What shepherd can stand before me? 20Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against #Ezek. 35:3, 7, 9 Edom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of #See ver. 7 Teman: #ch. 50:45Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21At the sound of their fall #ch. 8:16; 50:46; [Ezek. 26:15]the earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, #See ch. 48:40 one shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against #ver. 13 Bozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart #ver. 24; See ch. 6:24of a woman in her birth pains.”
Judgment on Damascus
23Concerning #Isa. 17:1; Amos 1:3 Damascus:
#
1 Kgs. 8:65; Zech. 9:2 “Hamath and #2 Kgs. 18:34 Arpad are confounded,
for they have heard bad news;
they melt in fear,
#
Zech. 9:4
they are troubled like the sea that cannot be quiet.
24 # [See ver. 23 above] Damascus has become feeble, #[ch. 46:5] she turned to flee,
and panic seized her;
anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her,
as #[See ver. 22 above]of a woman in labor.
25How is #[ch. 33:9]the famous city not forsaken,
the city of my joy?
26 # ch. 50:30 Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares,
and all her soldiers shall be destroyed in that day,
declares the Lord of hosts.
27And #See ch. 17:27 I will kindle a fire in the wall of #[See ver. 23 above] Damascus,
and it shall devour the strongholds of #1 Kgs. 15:18; 20:1; 2 Kgs. 6:24; 8:7; 13:3Ben-hadad.”
Judgment on Kedar and Hazor
28Concerning #Isa. 21:16; 60:7 Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck down.
Thus says the Lord:
# ver. 14, 31 “Rise up, advance against #Isa. 21:16; 60:7 Kedar!
Destroy #Isa. 11:14; Ezek. 25:4, 10; See Judg. 6:3the people of the east!
29 #
Ps. 120:5; Song 1:5 Their tents and their flocks shall be taken,
their #Ps. 120:5; Song 1:5 curtains and all their goods;
their camels shall be led away from them,
and men shall cry to them: #See ch. 6:25‘Terror on every side!’
30 # ver. 8 Flee, wander far away, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of Hazor!
declares the Lord.
For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon
has made a plan against you
and formed a purpose against you.
31 # [See ver. 28 above] “Rise up, advance against a nation #Job 16:12 at ease,
#
Ezek. 38:8, 11 that dwells securely,
declares the Lord,
#
Ezek. 38:8, 11 that has no gates or bars,
that dwells alone.
32 # [Ezek. 38:12] Their camels shall become plunder,
their herds of livestock a spoil.
# ver. 36 I will scatter to every wind
# See ch. 9:26 those who cut the corners of their hair,
and I will bring their calamity
from every side of them,
declares the Lord.
33Hazor shall become #See ch. 9:11 a haunt of jackals,
an everlasting waste;
# ver. 18 no man shall dwell there;
# ver. 18 no man shall sojourn in her.”
Judgment on Elam
34The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning #ch. 25:25; Gen. 14:1; Isa. 11:11; 21:2; Ezek. 32:24; Dan. 8:2 Elam, in the beginning of the reign of #2 Kgs. 24:17, 18Zedekiah king of Judah.
35Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, I will break #Isa. 22:6 the bow of #[See ver. 34 above]Elam, the mainstay of their might. 36And I will bring upon #[See ver. 34 above]Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven. And I will scatter them to all those winds, and there shall be no nation to which those driven out of #[See ver. 34 above]Elam shall not come. 37I will #[ch. 1:17] terrify #[See ver. 34 above] Elam before their enemies and before those who seek their life. I will bring disaster upon them, #See ch. 12:13 my fierce anger, declares the Lord. #See ch. 9:16I will send the sword after them, until I have consumed them, 38and I will set my throne in #[See ver. 34 above]Elam and destroy their king and officials, declares the Lord.
39“But in the latter days #[ch. 48:47] I will restore the fortunes of #[See ver. 34 above]Elam, declares the Lord.”
