Jeremiah 20
20
1Now the priest Pashhur,#Jer 21:1. son of Immer, chief officer in the house of the Lord,#Chief officer in the house of the Lord: head of the Temple police; cf. 29:26. By entering the Temple court (19:14), Jeremiah had put himself under Pashhur’s jurisdiction. heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2So he struck the prophet and put him in the stocks at the upper Gate of Benjamin in the house of the Lord.#Jer 29:26. 3The next morning, after Pashhur had released Jeremiah from the stocks, the prophet said to him:#Jer 6:25. “Instead of Pashhur, the Lord names you ‘Terror on every side.’#Terror on every side: the name indicates the siege that will beset Jerusalem. 4For thus says the Lord: Indeed, I will hand you over to terror, you and all your friends. Your own eyes shall see them fall by the sword of their enemies. All Judah I will hand over to the power of the king of Babylon,#Babylon: mentioned here for the first time in Jeremiah as the land of exile. The prophecy dates from after 605 B.C., when Nebuchadnezzar defeated Egypt and made the Babylonian (Chaldean) empire dominant in Syria and Palestine. who shall take them captive to Babylon or strike them down with the sword. 5All the wealth of this city, all its resources and its valuables, all the treasures of the kings of Judah, I will hand over to their enemies, who will plunder it and carry it away to Babylon.#2 Kgs 20:17; 24:12–16. 6You, Pashhur, and all the members of your household shall go into exile. To Babylon you shall go; there you shall die and be buried, you and all your friends, because you have prophesied lies to them.”#Jer 14:13–14; 28:15.
Jeremiah’s Interior Crisis
7You seduced me,#You seduced me: Jeremiah accuses the Lord of having deceived him; cf. 15:18. Lord, and I let myself be seduced;
you were too strong for me, and you prevailed.
All day long I am an object of laughter;
everyone mocks me.
8Whenever I speak, I must cry out,
violence and outrage I proclaim;
The word of the Lord has brought me
reproach and derision all day long.
9I say I will not mention him,
I will no longer speak in his name.
But then it is as if fire is burning in my heart,
imprisoned in my bones;
I grow weary holding back,
I cannot!#Jer 6:11; Jb 32:18.
10Yes, I hear the whisperings of many:
“Terror on every side!
Denounce! let us denounce him!”
All those who were my friends
are on the watch for any misstep of mine.
“Perhaps he can be tricked; then we will prevail,
and take our revenge on him.”#Jb 19:19; Ps 31:13; Lk 20:20.
11But the Lord is with me, like a mighty champion:
my persecutors will stumble, they will not prevail.
In their failure they will be put to utter shame,
to lasting, unforgettable confusion.#Jer 1:8; 15:20.
12Lord of hosts, you test the just,
you see mind and heart,
Let me see the vengeance you take on them,
for to you I have entrusted my cause.#Jer 11:20.
13Sing to the Lord,
praise the Lord,
For he has rescued the life of the poor
from the power of the evildoers!#Ps 35:9–10; 109:30–31.
14Cursed be the day#Deception, sorrow and terror have brought the prophet to the point of despair; nevertheless he maintains confidence in God (vv. 11–13); cf. Jb 3:3–12.
on which I was born!
May the day my mother gave me birth
never be blessed!#Jer 15:10; Jb 3:1–10; 10:18.
15Cursed be the one who brought the news
to my father,
“A child, a son, has been born to you!”
filling him with great joy.
16Let that man be like the cities
which the Lord relentlessly overthrew;
Let him hear war cries in the morning,
battle alarms at noonday,#Gn 19:25; Is 13:19.
17because he did not kill me in the womb!
Then my mother would have been my grave,
her womb confining me forever.#Jb 3:10–11; 10:19.
18Why did I come forth from the womb,
to see sorrow and pain,
to end my days in shame?#Jb 14:1.

A Message for Pashhur
1Now Pashhur, the son of Immer, the priest who was officer in charge in the temple of Yahweh, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Gate of Benjamin, which was by the temple of Yahweh. 3And then#Literally “And it was” on the next day, when Pashhur brought Jeremiah out from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “Yahweh will not call your name Pashhur, but#Literally “but if” Terror From All Around. 4For thus says Yahweh, ‘Look, I am making you a terror to yourself and to all your friends, and they will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will be seeing it.#Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation And all Judah I will give into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will deport them to Babylon, and he will strike them with the sword. 5And I will give all the wealth of this city, and all its acquisitions, and all its precious items, and all of the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies, and they will plunder them, and they will seize them, and they will bring them to Babylon. 6And you, Pashhur, and all those who live in your house will go into captivity, and you will go to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you, and all your friends to whom you have prophesied falsely.#Literally “in the lie”’ ”
Jeremiah’s Lament
7You have persuaded me, O Yahweh, and I was persuaded.
You have overpowered me, and you have prevailed.
I have become a laughingstock all day long.
Everyone#Literally “All of him” is mocking me.
8For as often as#Literally “from enough” I speak,
I must cry out violence and destruction.
I must shout, for the word of Yahweh has become for me
a disgrace and derision all day long.
9But if I say, “I will not mention him
and I will no longer speak in his name,”
then it becomes in my heart like a fire burning,
locked up in my bones,
and I struggle to contain it,#Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation
and I am not able.
10For I hear the rumor of many,
“Terror is from all around, denounce him,#Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation
yes, let us denounce him!”
All my close friends#Literally “All the human being of my peace” are watchers of my stumbling,
saying, “perhaps he can be persuaded,
and we can prevail over him,
and we can take our revenge on him.”
11But Yahweh is with me like a powerful warrior.
Therefore#Literally “Unto thus” my persecutors will stumble and will not prevail.
They will be very ashamed, for they will not achieve success.
Their everlasting insult#Literally “insult of eternity” will not be forgotten.
12Yet, O Yahweh of hosts, who tests the righteous,
who sees the heart#Literally “kidneys” and the mind,#Literally “heart”
let me see your retribution upon them,
for to you I have revealed my legal case.
13Sing to Yahweh, praise Yahweh,
for he has delivered the life of the poor from the hand of evildoers.
14Cursed be the day on which I was born,
let not the day on which my mother gave birth to me be blessed.
15Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,
saying,#Literally “to say” “A child is born to you, a son!”
and he made him very glad.
16And let that man be like the cities
that Yahweh demolished without regret,
and let him hear a cry for help in the morning,
and an alarm at the time of noon.
17Because he did not kill me in the womb,
so that my mother would have been for me my grave,
and her womb would be pregnant forever.
18Why#Literally “To what this” did I come out from the womb,
to see toil, and sorrow, and to end my days in shame?#Literally “my days will come to an end in shame”
